Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 6:41pm Little Danny:

Testing a new streaming client tonight to hopefully mitigate some of my drops into the oblivion (see last week's show).

Please let me know how things sound at your end.

thx & luv,
Danny
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 6:43pm Little Danny:

I'm especially curious if there'll be any discernible difference in audio quality at your ends. Get at me, audiophiles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 7:03pm Matt from New Orleans:

See you in 3 hours Danny. I’m continuing to listen to music and following the NBA draft. I’m a spurs fan oddly(lived in NY most of my life) but following the pelicans as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 7:06pm Little Danny:

Hi Matt! Thanks man, see ya soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 9:52pm Little Danny:

Hi and hello everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 9:59pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m back Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:01pm chresti:

Hi again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:01pm Little Danny:

I'm glad!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:01pm Flash Strap:

thumbs up and good luck with the new client brother
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:01pm Little Danny:

Hi chresti and flash, and thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:02pm doctorjazz:

Haven't plugged in the audiophile headphones yet, but sounding Great on the phone! I'll plug in soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:02pm fleep:

It's Blue Flame A-Go-Go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:02pm Matt from New Orleans:

Sounds good so far
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:03pm coelacanth∅:

hey Danny and all
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:05pm coelacanth∅:

it definitely sounds different...more rocking than usual!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:05pm still b/p:

Sounding good here, too...though the one-buck Dell speakers from a thrift shop aren't ideal for more particular signal appraisal. Could plug into the 40something-year-old receiver and listen through bigger 'n better cones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:05pm doctorjazz:

(Not sure Jesus & Mary Chain is a good track to judge audio quality, I think not)
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:06pm northguineahills:

This Jesus and Mary Chain is a fave album of mine.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:06pm coelacanth∅:

right. it's a little hissy but the mary chain is like that sometimes
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:06pm Little Danny:

Hi everybody! Keepin' busy over here
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:07pm Little Danny:

Probably true of a lot of music I favor, doc
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:07pm coelacanth∅:

i'm more of a munki guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:07pm chresti:

Cool Blue Fireball!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:09pm coelacanth∅:

so doc, back at ya -cassette deck? and do you use it?
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:10pm still b/p:

I have a Kenwood and an Aiwa cassette deck in the house. Nnnnnnneither of them workin'.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:12pm coelacanth∅:

sometimes it's as simple as replacing a belt
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:12pm chresti:

I'm listening via earbuds and smartphone, pretty dandy
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:14pm Little Danny:

awesome to hear, thanks y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:14pm Little Danny:

7"'s keeping me busy. BRB
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:15pm doctorjazz:

Have a few broken decks in the basement...including an old Nakamichi CR3, which was a pretty good deck in it's day. But they all have up the ghost. (I mostly used them to record LPs so I could listen in the go).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:15pm doctorjazz:

Sounds fine, LD! Sounds like a step up to me.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:16pm still b/p:

Soundsville album offers sounds of NY, Nashville, Philadelphia, Chicago (That's Hi Lifes), Detroit, England, West Coast, Surfing, Motorcycle, Hot Rod and Campus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:17pm JtotheK:

Digging the tunes, Danny! Stream coming thru nicely (I have headphones in). Hello everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:17pm doctorjazz:

I did have friends who were "tapers", snuck decks into shows and recorded them. Have some couldshows on cassette (but not sure they last forever, think they go bad). My friend went digital anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:20pm doctorjazz:

I gave him an 8 TB hard drive, which he says he'll fill up. Curious what I'll get.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:21pm coelacanth∅:

nakamichi was one of the best, supposedly. my brother had one -probably not the top of the line. it sounded beautiful and functioned perfectly; but as it got older it simply got weak. (and i don't mean old -just older. my akai, which i bought first, outlived it by many years) it could play short tapes and some brand new tdks, but many tapes it just couldn't pull and stopped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:21pm doctorjazz:

These are 45s, and likely are mono, but want to point pout that mono is what I'm hearing.
  Thu. 6/20/19 10:22pm Dean:

Those J&MC LPs aren't strictly audiophile samples, but they do give a ballpark sense of what a system can do. I audition equipment with recordings of acoustic instruments, naturally, but I love the "sound" of Darklands on a good 'table through a good system.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

8 terabytes -that's a lot of shows!
  Thu. 6/20/19 10:24pm Dean:

I had a Nakamichi cassette player for a while many years ago. But it wasn't the one I wanted, the Dragon.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:24pm coelacanth∅:

hey JK
  Thu. 6/20/19 10:27pm Dean:

I listen to WFMU strictly on laptops and desktops. I'm one of those guys who fondly recalls the days of transistor radios under the pillow.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:27pm still b/p:

I made a few mixtapes in '77. I think one works, one doesn't and one went missing. Have one right here, don't remember if it still plays correctly: Deep Purple, Burn and Highway Star; selections from Jeff Beck Blow By Blow; selections from Dark Side of the Moon; some Zeppelin II and III; and...Steve Martin songs! ...King Tut, Sally Goodin and Hoedown at Alice's. Think I was going for variety and not favorites at the last there.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:28pm northguineahills:

Gosh, I haven't made a mixtape since 2010.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:29pm doctorjazz:

He's got a lot of shows (and high rez digital files), I'll see how many terabytes he fills.
(I wanted a Dragon too, but didn't/couldn't spring for one. Of course, my taper friend had one). Also had a Sony D6, that tapers liked. I tried doing the taping thing, but it made me anxious sneaking the gear into clubs, and you had to be perfectly quiet and still to get a good recording, which killed the enjoyment of the show, so I quit pretty quickly.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:33pm coelacanth∅:

someone "challenged" me to a mixtape exchange sometime last year. (he thinks he's a genius in the music department)
i asked him how his is coming along, maybe a month later, and he didn't know what i was talking about. (he was drunk)
i hadn't made mine yet, so i didn't bother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:34pm chresti:

We had a portable radio/cassette player/recorder that I would record radio shows with, and listen to mixtapes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:35pm doctorjazz:

Still Soundslike mono on my set up, is it?
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

isn't the dragon like a high-end canondale, or a ferrari sergio? ...about 6-10% better than those that cost about 90% less?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:36pm doctorjazz:

(I pointed this out on another show a while back, and the DJ had missed a setting).
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:37pm coelacanth∅:

i would buy a dragon, on principal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:37pm Little Danny:

Hmm, let me look into that, doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:37pm chresti:

Haha ferrari sergio
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:37pm coelacanth∅:

(if i could)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:38pm Little Danny:

barely keepin' up with the comments - will get to y'all in turn my luvs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:38pm doctorjazz:

Sure Coel, but there's gold in that 10%
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:39pm chresti:

Now I want a Sergio Dragon
  Thu. 6/20/19 10:39pm Dean:

High-end audio is all about that last mile, which is indeed often worth a seemingly disproportionate marginal adjustment.
  Thu. 6/20/19 10:40pm Dean:

And yet it works the other way, too. I replaced my cheap-ass CD transport with another one. Big improvement. (But nothing comes close to the Linn Karik/Numerik, which is decidedly not cheap-ass.)
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:41pm coelacanth∅:

disproportionate. thank you.
i wouldn't buy a cannondale bicycle either. a $400. mountain bike is excellent and functions beautifully. why would i spend another $2600. for something that...is excellent, and functions beautifully?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:42pm doctorjazz:

Love my Linn turntable, their digital is great as well.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:43pm coelacanth∅:

well, there's cheapass and there's cheapass.
i wouldn't get a top of the line realistic brand cassette deck!
  Thu. 6/20/19 10:43pm Dean:

Linn is terrific, despite their almost Amway-like approach to marketing. Best system I've ever heard was all Linn. I love my Linn 'table, too. I've had it since '83.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:44pm northguineahills:

Love anything Broadcast related, and Haha, especially.

Time for spicy pierogis!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

i think it's time for a beer
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:47pm coelacanth∅:

haha i just noticed i typed i "would" buy a dragon on principal if i could.
i'll assume anyone who cares knows i meant "i would NOT"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:48pm doctorjazz:

Mine is probably 3-4 treats younger, though I needed most of it refurbished a few years ago...not much left of the original.
  Thu. 6/20/19 10:48pm Dean:

I've also heard less than ideal audio via Wilson, Krell, you name the big shots.
  Thu. 6/20/19 10:49pm Dean:

I really need a check-up. I kept mine up to date for years until Linn introduced upgrades that would have run double what I paid for the originals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:52pm doctorjazz:

I'm on a quest to get my sleep up to 8 hours a night (got it to 7-7.5 so far, not that easy for an old night tripper). So, I'm clocking out, catch the rest in the archives. Thanks, Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:54pm Little Danny:

@NGH: so with you regarding JaMC and Broadcast
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:55pm Little Danny:

I don't think you should go, doc
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard (or probably read) good things about linn; but i'm very satisfied with my not-fancy equipment.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

gnight doc
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 10:58pm still b/p:

My 28 year old Trek bike is a beater and a heavy mother and fairly perfect for what I need. You spend $2500 and you get a bike you can lift with two fingers of one hand, but you gotta worry about it and spend like crazy on parts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 10:59pm chresti:

7 hours are considered sufficient
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

still, absolutely. you hit a pothole on a $3000. road bike and then you buy a new rim. i go up over cubs and throw it onto my car roof (no bike rack) and i know it's fine.
if someone's not competing then why would one need such a light, perfectly tuned bicycle? afraid of getting more of a workout?!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

"cubs"... no - curbs.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:09pm northguineahills:

coel likes to run over baby bears, you monster!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:11pm coelacanth∅:

-only dancing 'dead baby bears!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:12pm still b/p:

Well, for some it's bikes, for some it's cars, for some it's audio, for some it's golf clubs, for some it's an RV, for some it's outdoor gear...standards and wants and focused interest and pursuit, in personal algorithm of budget and psychology.

coel, pedaling like mad, gets chased around and out by Wrigley Field groundskeepers every season.
  Thu. 6/20/19 11:13pm Dean:

For some it's poetry.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:16pm coelacanth∅:

s b/p how did you know that was me -without my fish costume?
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:17pm still b/p:

Of course, for some 'round here, it's rekkids! Some happy purchaser of a nutso price-tag bike might say, "You paid WHAT for that 45?"
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:19pm coelacanth∅:

if i had lots of money...
  Thu. 6/20/19 11:23pm Dean:

When friends mention my love of music I'm often inclined to make a correction: I like to play records. I'm not musically astute at all.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:24pm coelacanth∅:

i don't think i actually go overboard with anything.
some people would say i do, but it's all relative. the most i ever spent on a 45 was $20. an lp,$30. a camera, $13-1400. including lenses and stuff. a bicycle, $600. recording equipment $780. cassette deck, $500. ...
sushi, $45. ?
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:25pm coelacanth∅:

(all these thing one could spend several times more for)
  Thu. 6/20/19 11:25pm Dean:

I would, if I could, easily spend several tens of thousands on amplifiers. No question.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

if i had lots of money i'd have a house with some extra room and i'd probably buy at least 20 albums/week for a few years. (average)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:28pm chresti:

So, what's the best for under 300 dollars?
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:28pm northguineahills:

Thanks, LD and friends! I'm fading, ciao!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:28pm Martinibomb:

Loving the mix tonight.
  Thu. 6/20/19 11:29pm Dean:

You're right, coel. The single most important component in a good system is the room.

Plenty of great equipment, chresti, at that price point.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:29pm coelacanth∅:

yes what Martini said
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:30pm Little Danny:

Thanks martinibomb! I am too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:30pm chresti:

Me three, loving every minute!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:30pm coelacanth∅:

(i buy used amps and my criteria is different than most folks')
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:31pm Martinibomb:

I'm working on getting my radio show sounding better for the sheenas stream.. so similar issues hah
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

i wonder what's the top price Danny's paid for a 45... an album...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:32pm chresti:

There's a record store nearby that sells restored equipment
  Thu. 6/20/19 11:33pm Dean:

I've had my amps since...1994! 175W monoblocks from Muse Electronics. They're beautiful, but damn, if I could afford 50-100K the amps'd be, uh, better.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:33pm coelacanth∅:

(plasticglands)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:34pm chresti:

Loved the plasticglands
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

gang of 4 said the worst thing in 1954 was the bikini. i wonder what they think of the 1947 bikini...
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

(i know...before someone corrects me -they weren't talking about clothing)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:43pm Little Danny:

OMG coel I'd be embarrassed to tell you how much I've paid for certain records over the years.
  Thu. 6/20/19 11:48pm Dean:

I don't pay too much for records on a per unit basis, because there are so many great records at every price point. Bought a bunch of great records recently for one or two bucks each. But I spend a shit-ton on records in the aggregate.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:51pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard mentioned by wfmu people of spending $200. on a single.
pre-internet i spent 20 on one and now it's available for <$7.
  Thu. 6/20/19 11:52pm Dean:

I sold that $200 single.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:53pm chresti:

20 is about as high as I can go, unless it's on layaway.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:54pm coelacanth∅:

well, i bought the x-ray spex album for 5 bucks new when it came out and just a couple years later saw it for $100. in a store, used. got my hopes up; but the internet has screwed that all up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:56pm chresti:

I collect music, no matter the source
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/20/19 11:57pm chresti:

This is great, thanks LD!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:58pm coelacanth∅:

me too, although things have been tight for a while now...and living situations precarious. i've got around 3000 albums, mostly stored at my sister's house. if (when) she moves i've got a problem!
Avatar Thu. 6/20/19 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

(+4-500 45s, 600? cds, 15-1600 cassettes...some 8-tracks)
