Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:03pm Matt from New Orleans:

I went out to check the mural tonight and there was still people hanging out by it playing Dr John music. It’s been a nightly party for the last week.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:04pm Erica:

Another tribute show I see. Sorry to hear of Dr. John's passing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:04pm Funky16Corners:

I saw a pic of that. Looked amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:04pm chresti:

Hey Testify! Getting pretty fancy with your avatar, Larry..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:04pm Funky16Corners:

Hi Erica! I could not let the good Dr's passing go without a tribute. He's really important to me.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:04pm TDK60:

Golly, probably should get to bed before the doctor gets all night rituals going.

Who's that muppet in the gif image Larry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:06pm Funky16Corners:

The second line looked serious
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:06pm Jeff Ash:

Good evening from cold, rainy Wisconsin! Possible frost up north tonight. We could use this NOLA heat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:06pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - That's Dr Teeth, modeled on none other than Dr John!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:06pm Matt from New Orleans:

Dr Teeth. He’s based on Dr john
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:06pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Jeff!
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:07pm Erica:

Oh cool Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:07pm Matt from New Orleans:

The second line was fun but I bailed before it was over as I was hot. There’s a much bigger one being planned but details aren’t public yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:08pm Funky16Corners:

I can imagine!

Fleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:11pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m also sad about lil buck sinegal passing. He was fucking awesome. A brilliant musician and a humble chill dude. I got to know him over the years as he played at every single Ponderosa Stomp leading the house band.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:14pm TDK60:

..it's my understanding (if I'm right) that, even after Dr. left his night tripper persona behind, he still identified with voodoo spirituality. [?]
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:16pm Franco Twinkie:

I was going to walk across the street and get a jelly donut, but I think I'll just hang out here and have a pile of goofer dust with my coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:16pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - That would not surprise me at all.

My niece and sister-in-law from Portland, OR, just sent me a photo of them today...in Jersey City! I advised heading to 43 Montgomery St.

Bring some of that chill to California @Jeff Ash
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - After he hurt his hand, James Booker taught mac to play the organ so he could keep working
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:22pm Matt from New Orleans:

We had a cold front today. Only got up to 84.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:22pm Franco Twinkie:

The only time i ever saw Dr. John, it was a trifecta with Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. I think James Booker was pounding the keys in his band that night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:23pm Funky16Corners:

That must have been cool!
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:24pm Erica:

I must say Larry, that James Booker taught Dr. John well.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Insane is more like it, Larry.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:26pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Larry and all

...rest in peace, Dr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:26pm Matt from New Orleans:

I saw Dr John over 30 times. Almost all of them in the last 15 years. His band wasn’t great for a time in recent years as he fired all the old timers and put his then girlfriend who was decades younger in charge of the band. It didn’t work and lasted a little over a year before he ended the relationship and the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I think Dr John must have been predestined to play the piano. His talent was so prodigious and he only took it up because he couldn't play guitar at the level he wanted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

Hey C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

I derive a lot of SATISFACTION from this record...cough...
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:32pm coelacanth∅:

(i don't think you were the only one)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:33pm Funky16Corners:

You could probably do an hour or two of thinly disguised rewrites of Satisfaction
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:36pm Matt from New Orleans:

And what about whatever the Stones ripped off in writing Satisfaction Larry. That’s a band that I like but they had no problem ripping off musicians they loved and taking songwriting credit for it.
  Wed. 6/12/19 10:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Ooo poo pah doo, Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:38pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Some night I'm going to devote a show to songs ripped off by big name rock stars. There are tons.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:38pm coelacanth∅:

as far as i'm concerned anyone who jacks a 'stones riff and doesn't get sued gets props.
  Wed. 6/12/19 10:39pm Dean:

I think we're way too overwrought about "ripping off." I mean, Bach, Telemann, Handel...c'mon, it's how you create.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:40pm Funky16Corners:

I'm talking about wholesale theft, not inspiration or homage. The kind of stuff that gets people sued (successfully).
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:40pm coelacanth∅:

and it is a pretty basic riff -like the melody on "he's so fine"; basic stuff. i mean it's not like anyone could get sued for that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:42pm fleep:

owning a set of tones in a certain order is absurd to begin with but we pay people for smearing paint too
  Wed. 6/12/19 10:43pm Dean:

Wholesale theft: as I mentioned, Bach, Telemann, Handel, et al. There are compositions credited to each that are (arguably, okay) wholesale theft. We give way too much credit to "individual talent."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:43pm Matt from New Orleans:

The Stones are ridiculously litigious and that’s where my feelings lie on the issue because of it. The whole bittersweet symphony lawsuit was tad much. At least they finally did the right thing and gave Richard Ashcroft back some of the rights.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:43pm coelacanth∅:

well bands like the stones and even more so led zeppelin and peter paul & mary didn't just derive elements beyond the possibility of not being conscious of it; they did other people's songs and put their names under them.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Sue Me, Sue You Blues - Jesse Ed Davis. Bookmark it for later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:45pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - I beg to differ, but a conversation for another evening perhaps?
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

Matt, i will never forgive the stones for that, and vocally promote stealing their music when possible.
  Wed. 6/12/19 10:46pm Dean:

My suspicion--and that's all it is--is that the bands (except for U2 and Metallica) don't give a flaming poop. It's their "handlers" who challenge the infringers. Consider Springsteen, who invited folks to tape his shows, until Jon Landau became his manager.

Yep, for sure, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:46pm chresti:

Hey, I can smear paint, where do I apply@fleep?
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Cher could rock, yes indeed.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:49pm northguineahills:

Never faved a song by Cher that didn't have Lee Hazelwood w/ her....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:49pm chresti:

Before Cher got all Variety Show?
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

but people with power, like Jaggar and Richards, can step in anywhere along the way and stop the (at least in the case of bittersweet symphony) cruel insanity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

I'm a big fan of early Cher. Great singer, great choice of songs and great productions
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:51pm Franco Twinkie:

This was head band Cher, not curly wig Cher.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:51pm coelacanth∅:

and in that case whatever judge who ruled in favor of the stones (or their publishers) should be put on a raft in the middle of the pacific.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:51pm Erica:

Wrong singer ngh
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:52pm coelacanth∅:

that was "half-breed" Cher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 10:53pm Matt from New Orleans:

Allen Klein was the real villain. He reneged on an oral agreement when he saw the song was doing well. The record label should have gotten the clearance in writing before releasing it.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:53pm coelacanth∅:

and i had no idea the good Dr. was involved with the cake
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:54pm northguineahills:

Thanks for the tribute, I'm out in 10 minutes! Faved the episode...
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:55pm Franco Twinkie:

Alan Klein, talk about people that should be put on a raft...and set on fire!
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

oh they didn't get it in writing? i never read that crucial detail.
...yeah with a guy like klein involved that should be a no-brainer.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 10:56pm Kris Holmes:

Great stuff

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:03pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I had no idea they were related!
  Wed. 6/12/19 11:03pm Dean:

Man, that Cher album smells a lot like Boz Scaggs' first, personnel-wise, released the same year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:03pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - I saw that in the listings tonight. I couldn't believe that they were still playing hockey in the middle of June!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - The Boz was recorded in Muscle Shoals with Donna Jean Godchaux on backing vocals!
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Regarding Mick Jagger: Is it any surprise that he went from consorting with Alan Klein to hob nobbing at Davos? He obviously retained some thing from his days as a student of economics.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:07pm Franco Twinkie:

That sounds like Mr. Booker to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:07pm Funky16Corners:

Jagger and Richards are a couple of snooty art school millionaire dilletantes who think they're pirates. That they happened to have made some amazing music is a saving grace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:08pm Matt from New Orleans:

Jessie Hill’s daughter Judy mom of Trombone Shorty and James Andrews owned a bar called ooh poo pah doo that I used to frequent. Ms Judy is a cool lady and a great host. Unfortunately she lost the bar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:08pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I think in this case it's just his influence. I don't think Booker was in LA for the recordings
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Well they are pirates! In the truest sense.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:10pm Erica:

Yar!
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

Jagger was/is a business man as much as anything else. i have to wonder how he fell for klein's bullshit talk when Wyman knew from the getgo not to trust him.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:10pm Erica:

Imagine Mick and Keef wearing eye patches and stealing treasure. Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

Wasn't Keith actually in one of the Pirates of the Carribbean movies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:12pm Matt from New Orleans:

He was. Played Johnny Depp’s character’s dad I believe.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:13pm coelacanth∅:

(oh and -not assuming anyone cares but when i bunched andy johns on there before i meant andrew loog oldham. Johns may be a sub-optimal producer, but i don't know him the be a sleaze like those managers)
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Did he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:16pm Matt from New Orleans:

Without a doubt. John Broven wrote an excellent book about the owners of independent record labels in that era Larry. It’s called Record Makers and Breakers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:17pm Mike Sin:

Larry -- Loving your tribute to Dr. John! Quite educational!

All the misinformation about Jagger/Richards and such on your playlist? Meh. Not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:18pm Funky16Corners:

Jerry Wexler was a serious piece of shit. He even looked bad in his autobiography, but the book about Bert Berns sealed the deal for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:18pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Mike!
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:18pm coelacanth∅:

maybe not. i think he tried to get the beatles first but had to wait for Brian Epstein to check out before making it happen
  Wed. 6/12/19 11:19pm Dean:

I have the Boz album, but didn't realize DJG was there.

I don't know enough about the Stones' background, their misdeeds, etc., but I remember a silly ad hominem book about The Clash not being genuine punks, because they were art school educated. That's not an argument.

(Full disclosure: I didn't read the book.)
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:20pm Kris Holmes:

Huey P Meaux licensed those LA Mac, Jessie & Shirley recordings out to Wand & Chess. There is also a Crazy Cajun LP from the sessions & he licensed the My Children 45 to both Wand & Chess with the Wand 45 being pulled from release (I think). Typically ridiculous Crazy Cajun antics!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:20pm Funky16Corners:

@Kris - Where do you think they were recorded?
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:21pm Franco Twinkie:

This is a drunken camp fire, Mike Sin. Feel free to make any type of half baked speculative comments you like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:21pm Matt from New Orleans:

Not as ridiculous as his personal antics Kris. Huey Meaux is not a lovable character.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:22pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq!
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:26pm coelacanth∅:

most of it's out there, checked and triple checked for the public record.
and the fact that Jagger and Richards claimed total credit for songs they didn't write; and Jagger fucked Mick Taylor over -and over -and over -is enough for me to accept the other allegations as beyond feasible. (as well as the bittersweet symphony theft, which is fact)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

I just realized that Dr John used the phrase 'brain salad surgery', and this came out the same year as the ELP record of the same title!
  Wed. 6/12/19 11:27pm Dean:

I'll just add, recognizing that we're celebrating and mourning the life's work of Dr. John, that all of our snide, gossipy, and in my case mostly ignorant commentary is the water in which he and all of the greats swam. He can handle the derailed conversation. We still love him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:28pm Funky16Corners:

He was in the heart of the record business, independent and bigtime for all of his professional life. He surely knew the deal,

You got your ouija board out C?
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:38pm coelacanth∅:

-lookin' for it Matt!
...but i have been to the pub 2-3 times since he died and summoned both him and Roky Erickson repeatedly via jukebox. (and i'm still summoning Otis Rush and some others every time i go out)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:38pm Funky16Corners:

@C - That's the way to do it!

youtu.be...

That was a panel discussion with Dr John and Wardell Quezergue at the Ponderosa Stomp conference talking about Wardell’s career.

What was? The clip I used was from a cable access show.

Bob French was on the panel as well
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:43pm coelacanth∅:

Larry the jukebox has never had Roky in there except "you're gonna miss me". last time i checked was just a month or 2 ago; but i decided to look again and sure enough. still only 1 elevators song but 3 Roky albums. i've noticed that happening before after someone died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:43pm Funky16Corners:

Nothing wrong with that
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:43pm Mike Sin:

Larry -- That's fine and all.

I just think thst most folks commenting on the ABKCO/Bittersweet Symphony legal case have not spent any time reading any documents regarding the case, copyright law, or art appropriation. Of course, it's easier just to paint everything with simple broad black and white strokes, but as usual, it's a bit more complex and gray.

Great show! Night, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:44pm Funky16Corners:

@Mike - I agree. I don't know much about it other than the Verve (?) borrowed the Andrew Loog Oldham thing

Nite Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:46pm Matt from New Orleans:

Fair enough Mike. I certainly was guilty of that.
  Wed. 6/12/19 11:47pm Dean:

Mike Sin makes a very important point. Sometimes these disputes seem -- and are -- bogus. But typically they can be mind-bendingly and mind-numbingly complex.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:47pm Franco Twinkie:

Mike, is there a JD following your name by chance?
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:48pm Kris Holmes:

Man, he really could play piano for a guitarist
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:49pm coelacanth∅:

well, one thing is a fact -jagger and richards' names are under the song, and they did not write it. and they're filthy rich already when the verve were in dire straights and that song was their ticket out.
other facts are that the use of the strings are 1) barely recognizable/ not at all recognizable to most people 2) not written by jagger and richards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:49pm Funky16Corners:

@Kris - Hell yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:51pm Matt from New Orleans:

He became a professor and the next great New Orleans piano player. Davell Crawford probably is the current champion. He’s Sugar Boy’s grandson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

New Orleans piano is whole other thing. Just amazing.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/19 11:52pm coelacanth∅:

how many times did beatles songs get slightly rearranged or riffs used outright? 1000? 2000? 5,000 times? did they ever sue anyone?
nope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/12/19 11:54pm Matt from New Orleans:

The Stones didn’t sue. ABCKO did which the stones have no control of.
  Wed. 6/12/19 11:54pm Dean:

Check out Bryan Wright's Rivermont Records for historical and contemporary recordings of NOLA music.

James Booker was in L.A. But it was Jerry Garcia he played with....later,of course.
Avatar Thu. 6/13/19 12:00am coelacanth∅:

Matt, i know; but i do think they could've stopped it - being abcko's biggest money-maker, they'd have some pull. maybe not. but they certainly could've objected to the lie of putting their names as writers.
