I'm Out, Destination Out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:02am listener james from westwood:

Morning, Jeff and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:02am Jeff Golick:

C'mon in, c'mon out, grab a seat hello, @David D, @Listener Gregory, @listener james!
  Sun. 6/9/19 9:05am Doug Schulkind:

Hello
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:07am Jeff Golick:

Well, hello, handsome.
  Sun. 6/9/19 9:08am Listener Gregory:

Sounds good, though music is softer than your voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:08am Jeff Golick:

That's no bueno.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 9:09am doca:

Hey, @Jeff G, hey, guys, what's up?
  Sun. 6/9/19 9:09am Listener Gregory:

I spent 30 min yesterday looking for two of my favorite Dr. John albums—solo piano on an obscure label (Dr. John Plays Mac Rebbenack was one). Could not find them anywhere! Will donate $25 to WFMU if someone tells me where they are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:11am Jeff Golick:

@doca! Great to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:11am Jeff Golick:

@LG: did you look behind you?
  Sun. 6/9/19 9:12am Listener Gregory:

Dr. John poses a terrible filing problem: File under R? J? D? And if under D, is it "Do..." or "Dr"?
No, Jeff, I never look behind me. That's where the monsters live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Well Saitchel Paige would be happy about that, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:14am Jeff Golick:

Today's show aims to answer the eternal question: "How many versions of 'Blue Monk' are too many?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:18am Uncle Michael:

Good morning.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 9:18am doca:

I love one-music shows, but will it be a 3-hour Blue Monk show or just one hour of it?

BTW, I was there when Ken played three hours of Bohemian Rhapsody. Hard to forget.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:19am Jeff Golick:

@UM! Mister 300!

@doca: it won't even be one hour...hang in there...
  Sun. 6/9/19 9:22am Listener Gregory:

Interesting how Ran Blake took all the swing out of the song, which is maybe its most prominent feature.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:22am David D:

Enjoying the Graham-Collins.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 9:23am TDK60:

Morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:24am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @LG. He really unpacked it.

@David D.: Collins lays out.

Good morning, @TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:25am Uncle Michael:

Speaking of Satchel...Evan Funk Dvies, his S.O. and I visited the Negro Leagues Museum on Wednesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:26am Jeff Golick:

Ah, yes, @UM. Heard you mention that. Very cool. What town is that in?
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 9:31am quinn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Heh. Hey, @quinn. Will do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

BONK MULE!
  Sun. 6/9/19 9:37am Listener Gregory:

I'd forgotten this Abbey Lincoln version. Or maybe I heard it in a later recording, but she does a great job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Indeed.

The line-up on this Abbey Lincoln record is incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:38am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:39am Jeff Golick:

Aha. Nice. "known for its barbecue, jazz heritage and fountains" it says here.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 9:42am TDK60:

Listener Gregory: In the WFMU physical library probably, and in the artist browser on this website Dr. John is in the 'Dr' area -after 'Dq' and before 'Ds'.

  Sun. 6/9/19 9:44am Listener Gregory:

@TDK Next time you're there, could you please look for my two missing albums? Thx
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Worth a trip, @UM?

I see you, @holland oats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:51am Uncle Michael:

Worth a visit if you make the trip. Maybe not worth a trip.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 9:51am TDK60:

If you've never "gone" there, it's at the bottom of the main WFMU page, in the 2nd column under "Programming." Click on "Advanced Search" then "Artist/Band Browser." Then, choose the letter of the artist's *first* name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

Dr John is filed under D-r in the WFMU library. We take the letters in the name literally. So Doctor Umuez Diva is under D-o.

@Listener Gregory
I can send you Dr. Plays Mac Rebennack. Email me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:52am Jeff Golick:

@TDK60: I spend an embarrassing about of time mucking about the FMU advance search area.
  Sun. 6/9/19 9:54am Listener Gregory:

@Doug Thanks!!
  Sun. 6/9/19 9:55am Listener Gregory:

Also, thanks to Kunihiro Izumi for existing. I have never heard of her/him before.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 9:55am TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Crazy lucky!
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 9:59am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff, the D:O faithful, and lucky listeners just happening upon the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:00am Uncle Michael:

We listened to DJPMR over coffee this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:02am Jeff Golick:

Hi and hello, @Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:03am Jeff Golick:

@UM: what is...DJPMR?
  Sun. 6/9/19 10:05am Listener Gregory:

One second before it came on, I thought, "He's got to end it with Monk." You're seconds ahead of me, Jeff.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 10:06am doca:

I paused for a moment and thought "that must be Monk". Incredible how his playing is unique and recognizable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:07am Jeff Golick:

...or utterly predictable, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:07am Jeff Golick:

@doca: he has such fun with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

No yoga for me this morning. Too tired. I was kept up for hours overnight by a dog on the freak-out. Was it a terrible thunderstorm or fireworks that spooked the poor pup, you might ask. No, it was teenagers at the temple next door to us, singing in Hebrew abandon at three in the morning. It seems that part of the annual Shavuot celebration at this temple is the let the kids go wild for one night. And wild the went. Kind of sweet, actually, but the dog was terrified.
  Sun. 6/9/19 10:12am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, possibly your dog is Reform?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

Ran is pronounced like "ran."
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 10:13am TDK60:

..anyone know which DJ has done a Dr. John show the last days?
  Sun. 6/9/19 10:14am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, I have the Kimbrough Monk set, and it's quite good. Very straight-ahead but nonetheless it keeps your attention throughout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Um, er, well, my dog is... part German shepherd.
  Sun. 6/9/19 10:17am Listener Gregory:

@Doug Oops.
  Sun. 6/9/19 10:20am Listener Gregory:

I would have said that the intersection of Merle Haggard and Anthony Braxton is the null set, but once again I stand corrected.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 10:20am TDK60:

NYC Sunday subway adventures, oh yeh. Go an extra hour early. (I've missed events.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:24am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @Doug, Shavuout is a whole nightlong thing. Apparently. I don't think the bros on our roof (just above our bedroom) were celebrating that holiday last night, though. Nor was my son, who for some reason was watching Arrested Development on his laptop in his room, with the door open, in the wee hours this morning. All to say: I feel you.
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 10:29am TDK60:

..the noise above me in my old building may eventually drive me loony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:32am Uncle Michael:

DJPMR=Dr. John Plays Mac Rebbenack
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:33am Jeff Golick:

@TDK60: Dave the Spazz did a Dr. John tribute: wfmu.org...

And I think Larry Grogan of the Drummer stream's Testify! show will be doing a tribute on Wednesday night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:33am Jeff Golick:

@UM: TY
Avatar Sun. 6/9/19 10:38am TDK60:

thanks Jeff, will listen soon..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:44am doctorjazz:

Hi all, in and out!
  Sun. 6/9/19 10:45am Listener Gregory:

This is getting on the fightin' side of me.
  Sun. 6/9/19 10:47am Dean:

For LG upthread re: filing Dr. John records. I'm not 100% certain, but it appears Library of Congress established "Dr. John" as an authorized personal name (i.e., they don't refer you from that name to "Rebbenack, Max"). Further, LC filing rules provide, "File abbreviations exactly as written." Thus, you'd file in the D-Rs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:49am Jeff Golick:

Welcome, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:51am Andrew Waterloo:

this Braxton piece just keeps on giving
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:53am doctorjazz:

@LG, I have the Kimbrough Monk set as well, and out is a fine listen (though, as with all multi cd, "complete" sets, it is takingme a while to get all the way through). Bout half way there so far
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 10:53am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @Dean. And nice to see you!

@Andrew Waterloo! He's nothing if not generous. (Like you!)
  Sun. 6/9/19 10:59am Listener Gregory:

@Dean, why hadn't I met you and WFMU in 1985 when I first started to file my LPs?
However, filing items exactly as written can cause a problem when the dumb record companies aren't consistent, and so you can get "Dr" for one and "Doctor" in another, and when you find the wrong place, you wonder why that one album is missing.
Sun. 6/9/19 11:00am Peter from DE:

Good morning!
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:00am Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, I think I took about a month to get through it.
Now wondering how to alphabetize *your* name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:00am Jeff Golick:

'morning, @Peter from DE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:01am doctorjazz:

Have a vinyl copy of Dr a John Plays Mac Rebennack (filed correctly, though that certainly is not guaranteed on my shelves). Did you leave it here, @LG?
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:03am Listener Gregory:

@doctorjazz, Arrrgggghhhhh!
I'm probably moving in a couple of months, so that will give me a chance to go through every single possession, hopefully finding things that have been lost since the last move.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:04am Dean:

That's true, LG, which is why you have to operate an "authority file" of established names, with cross-references (part of a system that librarians and archivists refer to as a "syndetic structure") from variants, alternatives, etc. Hence, even if the label prints "Doctor...," your system cross-refers to "Dr..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:06am doctorjazz:

Well, you can call me doc, or you can call me J, or you can call me DJ, or you can call me Jack...
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:07am Dean:

I'll just mention, and then shut up, that Google and its ilk once envisioned our being able to abandon these carefully crafted tools, because their computers are S-O-O-O smart. Have you taken a look lately at Google Books? Ha, ha, ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Or even searched one's gmail...

Just throwing it out there that Braxton was about 70 years old at the time of this recording.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:11am Dean:

That gives me ten years to catch up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:11am doctorjazz:

Pretty amazing!
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:12am Listener Gregory:

@Dean, When I retire, I will develop such a system for my collection. The day it is done, my heart will stop beating, mission accomplished.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:12am Listener Gregory:

Momma tried to raise Anthony better, but her pleading he denied.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:13am Jeff Golick:

Re google, I found this Nicholas Carr article on them and Facebook and all that, in re capitalism, from earlier this year, to be very good if sobering reading: lareviewofbooks.org...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Too bad Merle didn't live to hear this tribute.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:15am Dean:

Zuboff was at Berkeley recently, and on the campus radio station for an interview. She is...intense.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:17am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, did you just tease us with 2 seconds of Law Years?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Gah yes @LG. Great ears (on your part) and slippery fingers (on mine).
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:19am Dean:

To my mind, though, the "corruption" (as if capitalism weren't already rotten to the core), preceded Google. In the early days of the opening of the Internet, both pre- and post-Web, to public consumption, numerous hyper advocates naively or malevolently sold a bill of goods about, e.g., "virtual community" and such.

Oh, terrific! A new Trovesi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:19am doctorjazz:

Love Trovesi, just downloaded (but haven't listened yet to) this album.
Sun. 6/9/19 11:20am Peter from DE:

Basin Street Blues - that was awesome
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:20am Listener Gregory:

I used that cut (Law Years) to try out new CD players a few years ago, and so it's very familiar.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:22am Listener Gregory:

Also, it should be said that Haggard became a critic of US corporations and government in his later years, though perhaps not with a sophisticated theoretical perspective. He just new that average working people were getting screwed.
Sun. 6/9/19 11:24am Peter from DE:

I think you meant “bagatellen” but “bon bon” works. If it’s Italian maybe it should be “bacio”?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:25am Jeff Golick:

Where were you a minute ago @Peter?
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:30am Listener Gregory:

This is a real palate cleanser.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:34am Uncle Michael:

OK, this Red Kite is slaying me.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:35am chresti:

Hello from one hotspot in Griffith Park
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:35am doctorjazz:

Need to psych for a bike ride, I can did it, I can do it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:37am doctorjazz:

The bed is SO comfy, though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:37am Uncle Michael:

I was part of that naive virtual community movement, Dean. It's still there for people that choose it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:38am Jeff Golick:

@chresti! Hoping your keeping cool.

@UM: brand new to me. Norwegian folks. Members of Shining and Bushman's Revenge, among other bands I've not heard of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:39am doctorjazz:

This Red Kite IS Insane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Anthony Braxton's tribute to Red Kite is wonderful. Lots of harmonica on that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:39am Uncle Michael:

Next week, three hours of bands Jeff hasn't heard of!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:40am doctorjazz:

Rate Noise, like that label.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:42am Listener Gregory:

At the moment, your entire set list fits on my computer screen. I think you can add one more without messing that up.
Whoa, here comes Charlie!
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:43am Listener Gregory:

Whoa, that's NOT Charlie Haden! He copped the opening bass part perfectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:43am Jeff Golick:

In a rare bit of looking ahead, I have some idea what next Sunday will bring: it's Bill Dixon's birthday. So. (Also Father's Day, fwiw.)
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:46am Dean:

UM, speaking of community, when will be the next listener-curated playlist show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:46am Jeff Golick:

RareNoise has being capturing and putting out some great Jamie Saft stuff, inter alia.
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:48am Listener Gregory:

That (Shadduck piece) was a great performance. Have to check him out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:48am Stanley:

I dozed off earlier but the Bikini Kill 'I like fucking' woke me up and reminded me I still had the dshes to do. Anyway, I was here and enjoying. Thanks, again Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:50am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

@Stanley, you dish. @Granny Spicy Tuna, you made it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:51am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:54am Uncle Michael:

January, 3, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:54am doctorjazz:

@Dean, from my memory, the request show on Hinky Dinky is annual, in January, half way there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:55am Jeff Golick:

Now *that's* looking ahead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:55am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

And i hope we get another CHAIN of songs from UM in October, that's a little closer!
  Sun. 6/9/19 11:56am Dean:

Yow! The last one seemed so long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:56am Uncle Michael:

That isn't tied to October in any particular way, Granny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:59am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 11:59am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/9/19 12:01pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Thanks, Jeff, i will dare to dip into the archives and steep in your Blue Monk set.
  Sun. 6/9/19 12:01pm Listener Gregory:
