Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 8:49pm Matt from New Orleans:

I hope you’re making time for a Dr John song or two tonight. See you in an hour +.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 8:56pm Little Danny:

Heya Matt! Don't know Dr. John's catalog that well, but I did just pull out a coupla Mac Rebenack instro 45s
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 9:10pm Matt from New Orleans:

That’s actually preferable for me. I got to see him perform a number of those sides in 2008 at the Ponderosa Stomp. Dr Ike convinced him to play a guitar set and Lil’ Buck backed him up. He clearly had been practicing as he was solid playing the instrumentals even with the injured finger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 9:13pm Matt from New Orleans:

He clearly was having a great time and repeatedly said that he hadn’t played any of these songs in 50 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 9:21pm Little Danny:

Wow. Mac on guitar. That's fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 9:59pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m back. Waiting for flash to turn it over to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:00pm chresti:

Hi Danny and cool room!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:02pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hey chresti. Looks like ther are technical difficulties
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:02pm Little Danny:

Huh. Having a hard time connecting. Gimme one second...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:04pm chresti:

Electric Man sounds good
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:05pm Matt from New Orleans:

It does. I’m guessing this is still the stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:06pm Matt from New Orleans:

I was enjoying the Persian psyche track that had been before electric man
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:06pm Little Danny:

Never a dull moment here. Yet so many dumb moments. Hi all! I'm live now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:06pm fleep:

We be linked
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:07pm Little Danny:

Man I really know how to bungle an intro
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:07pm Matt from New Orleans:

Cool Danny glad you got it working.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:08pm fleep:

The jump in and out of Drummer hyperspace gets rough, blame the electrons
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:09pm chresti:

wow Silver Apples
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 10:09pm northguineahills:

drinking teardrops from her eyes....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:10pm Little Danny:

I like that analogy, Fleep! Drastic environment changes are drastic
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 10:10pm northguineahills:

When my roommate found a copy of the Silver Apples first LP, it blew my mind! (this was two years before the reissues....)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:11pm doctorjazz:

Sounds Like we're Flaming now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:11pm Little Danny:

@chresti: All time classic, this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:12pm doctorjazz:

The backup singer on the Silver Apples track needs a butt of work on his intonation...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:13pm Little Danny:

My mind too was blown when I first heard the Silver Apples in the late '90s. Still nothin' else like 'em
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:13pm Johnzon:

I feel like somebody played a really good cover of that silver apples song on here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:13pm Matt from New Orleans:

My friend dragged me to see Silver Apples in college when they reformed in the mid 90s. I had no idea what I was in for but I had brought a lot of weed with me and had a good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:13pm Little Danny:

Haha doc yer autocorrect
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 10:14pm northguineahills:

@Johnzon: It was Big Blood's cover of, "I have known Love">
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:14pm Little Danny:

Hey Johnzon! Third Eye Foundation did a really great cover of it; I think I've played it before here
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:15pm Little Danny:

Good call, forgot about that one NGH
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:15pm chresti:

I think the wonky intonation makes the song
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:16pm doctorjazz:

Just noticed it (was getting out off my car).
:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:17pm Little Danny:

Yeah, the Silver Apples vocals are charming but artless in the extreme
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 10:17pm northguineahills:

What chresti said....

I'll be in and out while cleaning!
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:17pm Johnzon:

LD... I don't know Dr. J's catalog that well either but I had a best of & I think my favorite song was Qualified... "your champagne aint no hipper than my sodapop"... the anti-elitist message resonates with me haha. Just found out he died... damn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:18pm doctorjazz:

Saw Dr John a whole bunch of times, just heard he passed. Sad...
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:20pm Johnzon:

thanks guys! I shall check them all out and hear which ones groove my ears arigato gracias danke shoen aloha
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:21pm Little Danny:

We'll be in these chilly outer realms for just a song or two more. But I'll be attempting to land this spacecraft in Ethiopia shortly enough
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 10:21pm northguineahills:

lurve this Ussachevsky…..
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:22pm Johnzon:

if I was an alien I'd probably land in Ethiopia too... somewhere like that. no offense NJ/Orson Welles
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:23pm Johnzon:

I am enjoying these realms tho!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:23pm Little Danny:

@NGH: it's so peaceful, and so gorgeous. I really owe it to myself to learn more of his discography
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:23pm Little Danny:

Thanks Johnzon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:29pm chresti:

What Johnzon said!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:31pm doctorjazz:

Like this Eddie Gale single (strange in single format, but cool,!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:33pm doctorjazz:

(Can't imagine it being on a jukebox).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:33pm Little Danny:

Totally agree, doc. It's also the best track from the LP in my opinion. Love when that happens
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:34pm Little Danny:

Man I know. I also have '60s-era Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler 45s. Why???
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:36pm Dean:

If you can't imagine a record being on a jukebox, you haven't been to Al's Bar.
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:36pm Carmichael:

Heya Danny and peeps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:37pm Matt from New Orleans:

No I haven’t been to Al’s or Phil’s or Shemp’s Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:37pm Little Danny:

Hey Carmichael! And hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:38pm doctorjazz:

Would love to turn one of those 45s up one day.
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:38pm Dean:

Can't speak for Phil's or Shemp's, but Al's, well, yes, I can. Used to do my homework there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:40pm JtotheK:

This week in 78 talk: Area shop had Tito Puente 'Confucious Mambo' and also Joe Loco 'Why Don't You Do Right'. Filed as giveaways for a latin 78 collectro. Both were spun as background music while browsing. Hi Danny, hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:40pm doctorjazz:

Sounds Like I'd like Al's, but if a commute, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:40pm Little Danny:

Mind you doc, I don't think that the Ayler or Coleman 45s were intended for jukebox play. On the other hand, I don't know whom they were intended for. Turned-on DJs of the '60s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:41pm Little Danny:

"Confucious Mambo" is so great! Hey Jason
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:41pm fleep:

We've landed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:42pm Little Danny:

And boy is it hot here
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:42pm doctorjazz:

Ayler would work great on a spindle multi player turntable after Leslie Gore's It's My Party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:43pm Little Danny:

That DOES sound like a party
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:43pm JtotheK:

Jazz 45s: I played out the Mingus 45 of 'Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting' ... and just learned of Nat Adderley 'Stony Island'. Vocal Jazz 45: Jon Hendricks 'Watermelon Man' is great.
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:43pm Dean:

Al's was a commute for me, and I lived then in Southern California east of Little Tokyo in LA, where it sat. It was a haven, mostly a punk haven, but the clientele represented a broader swath. The jukebox was among its strengths.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:44pm JtotheK:

Danny: Do you think one could find enough 'Watermelon Man' 45s to do a solid set of nothing but?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:46pm doctorjazz:

Actually, Ornette's Theme from a Symphony had a melody that IS the perfect follow up to It's My Party.
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:57pm Carmichael:

The Silver Apples are amazing. I got that song on the FMU thumb drive premium a few years back. Along with about 100 other great songs.
  Thu. 6/6/19 10:58pm Johnzon:

just washed all my dishes... thanks for providing the musical motivation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 10:59pm Little Danny:

I can mentally summon at least 10 versions, J2tK. I'm not sure my attention span could handle it, tho
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 11:02pm still b/p:

I hereby state freely and publicly that I'm not going to wash the stack of dishes right over there 'til maybe tamarryyy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:04pm JtotheK:

@still b/p: thank you for that declaration. I just finished washing a stack of dishes a little while ago...otherwise I'd have held off and joined you as a show of solidarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:04pm doctorjazz:

Ok, gotta get to 5ish for a !#@$%$@ meeting in the morning, gotta crash, thanks, Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:05pm chresti:

Just a few dishes awaiting my attention, mostly utensils
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 11:06pm northguineahills:

Orchestra Kool, new to me!
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 11:07pm still b/p:

Dirty Stack Slackers Unite! Dirty Slacks Stackers, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:08pm chresti:

I can't leave dirty dishes, there's a possibility I might crash into them in the morning when I'm making coffee
  Thu. 6/6/19 11:08pm Carmichael:

Daughter shame! “Wow, there sure are a lot of dirty dishes. Too bad I have to work all day, or I’d do them.”
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 11:09pm northguineahills:

I only do my dishes once a week on the weekend. Right, now, minus the bathroom, my house is spotless (probably for the first time every, as I usually rotate cleaning duties).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:11pm chresti:

After we make tamales, difficult, dirty dishes often wind up on the front porch for months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:13pm chresti:

Like this Tabu..
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 11:15pm still b/p:

Was helping a friend do some final move-out of her stuff from her sold home yesterday and she had a couple people over to do clean-up, one of whom said, "I like to clean." These words are strange to me. She aded the qualifier that she's more eager about cleaning places other than her own.

The post-tamale circumstance right there as you've described it is a ready song lyric, chresti.
  Thu. 6/6/19 11:17pm Carmichael:

Front porch, interesting. Waiting for a drive by cleaning?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:20pm chresti:

Out of sight, out of mind, I guess. Also a contest to see who can stand to go without the large bowls and pots
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:21pm chresti:

---the longest
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 11:21pm northguineahills:

I put most of my vegetable waste in my garden (still never developed a compost heap.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:23pm Little Danny:

@NGH: Ours goes into buckets that, when full, smell like death. It turns into sludge during the hotter months
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:25pm Little Danny:

He's already been well recognized this week. But RIP Roky
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:26pm chresti:

There was a guy that had a giant compost pile in his front yard. A friend that lived near his property would see it smoldering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:27pm chresti:

Good choice
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:31pm chresti:

----Fire Engine
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:31pm Little Danny:

I agree with your validation chresti!
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 11:32pm northguineahills:

ok, going to check out in a bit, getting ready for bed. will be back near the end. Cheers, LD and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:46pm Little Danny:

God I'm babbly tonight. I feel like I just ate up 30 minutes of this show with my mic break
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:46pm chresti:

still b/p, send that woman over here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:48pm chresti:

Always enjoy the blue flame babble
  Thu. 6/6/19 11:48pm Carmichael:

Ya b/p, does she do windows?
  Thu. 6/6/19 11:49pm Carmichael:

Boy, this sounds so much like Irwin music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:49pm Little Danny:

thank you chresti
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:50pm Little Danny:

I know this sounds unbelievable, but I actually had the same thought, Carmichael (re:Irwin's show)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:50pm Little Danny:

I mean, it's vaguely reminiscent of the Lee Morgan track he often begins his shows with
  Thu. 6/6/19 11:58pm Carmichael:

Exactly, Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:58pm fleep:

Thanks, Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/6/19 11:58pm chresti:

Thanks Danny! Time to go wash those dishes.
Avatar Thu. 6/6/19 11:58pm still b/p:
