Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Take it away Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:04pm Little Danny:

My friends, hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:07pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hey Danny. Was listening to a Pete Smith mix on mixcloud of British issues of northern soul songs and doing coding exercises and lost track of time. Missed the first 5 minutes.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:09pm northguineahills:

I need to chill after Flash's set, this is perfect....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:12pm Little Danny:

Haha, hey Matt - that's a pretty solid reason for missing the start! Welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:12pm Little Danny:

Hey NGH, me too! Keepin' the lights soft and the cushions out on the floor
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:13pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:14pm Little Danny:

Geezerette, my friend - hello!
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:15pm geezerette:

:)
  Thu. 5/30/19 10:16pm Dean:

The flipside of this track is a song co-written by a J. Mathis. Not *the* J. Mathis, I assume?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:16pm Little Danny:

I might suggest a morphine drip for the next few songs, Jason
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:18pm Little Danny:

I've honestly never listened to it, Dean. It certainly would have been an unorthodox collab
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:18pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Danny and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:18pm JtotheK:

JtotheK 78 records update: I found a Harry Revel 'Music out of the Moon' 78 boxset. Only problem - I have no way to play the damn things. So it goes...
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:18pm geezerette:

Appreciating the hippy-flavored mellowness. Entranced by candlelight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:20pm JtotheK:

(Which is less of a problem than if I /did/ have a way to play the damn things. Because then that would mean I'd have 78s to file and look at. Good grief.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:21pm Little Danny:

@Dean: just listened in cue. It's actually a pretty good late '60s psych-y rock instrumental
  Thu. 5/30/19 10:22pm Dean:

Tuvan/Mongolian throat singing has been dubbed by UNESCO an art of "intangible cultural heritage of humanity." I get it. But when I hear it I have the same response I have to Billy Corgan's vocals for Smashing Pumpkins. These singers need more fiber in their diet.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:22pm northguineahills:

I could of swore Dan Bodah took over the controls for a minute!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:22pm Little Danny:

78s are a huge commitment for sure! I dabble in them, but try to keep it tidy. There's just so much incredible music that only came out on 78, though, alas
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:24pm northguineahills:

@LD: I've lost too many 78's by them cracking or dropping them. I have ,many that can't be found anywhere else, especially my Mexican ones...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:24pm JtotheK:

@Danny - agreed. I saw a Joe B. documentary and admire 78 collectors but my my my the effort involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:25pm Little Danny:

LOL Dean

I disagree of course but I can't stop loving you
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:25pm JtotheK:

still doesn't have this JLH shake it up and go 45.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:26pm Matt from New Orleans:

Dean i take it you didn’t enjoy the Paul Pena doc Genghis Blues?
  Thu. 5/30/19 10:26pm Dean:

78s are a major source of otherwise impossible to hear classical recordings. We can thank Ward Marston and St. Laurent, among several others, for reviving them.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:26pm geezerette:

super set!
  Thu. 5/30/19 10:26pm Dean:

Hey, Matt. I don't know it. I don't like movies, generally.
  Thu. 5/30/19 10:27pm Dean:

Love you, too, Danny. And WFMU across the board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:29pm JtotheK:

Re: Movie talk. This week I watched 'Bathtubs Over Broadway', a documentary about Industrial Musicals. From the dude behind Dave Letterman's record collection. Worth a watch. I didn't realize Jello Biafra was into that stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:30pm Mark Hurst:

@Matt from New Orleans: I saw "Genghis Blues" in the theater when it came out. Really enjoyed it. And Paul is/was from NOLA, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:31pm Mark Hurst:

@JtotheK: if you're interested, I interviewed the director of "Bathtubs Over Broadway," Dava Whisenant, a few months back. She's great. Here's the show - interview starts at 25:30 ... www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 10:32pm northguineahills:

Lo siento LD, I need to check out early. I have a lot on my plate tomorrow. My landlord wants to start showing show my place by next week in case my interviews next week go south. I might be back for the end. Salud!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:32pm Matt from New Orleans:

Paul Pena lived in San Francisco. Paul Pena was a blind blues musician who was most famous for writing jet airliner which the Steve Miller band recorded. Later in life he would sit in his house and listen to a shortwave radio and heard tuvan throat singing and became fascinated and taught himself how to do it on his own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:32pm Little Danny:

Mark Hurst, warm hellos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:32pm Little Danny:

Thanks, geez!
  Thu. 5/30/19 10:32pm Dean:

A family from Mongolia was a former neighbor. The patriarch was extremely proud of the Mongolian tradition of throat singing.

I remember that show, Mark Hurst! 'twas really really good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:32pm doctorjazz:

Hi folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:33pm JtotheK:

Love uptight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:34pm JtotheK:

@Mark Hurst - thanks, I am a listener of your program (though far too shy to comment) - but missed that one - will check it out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:38pm Little Danny:

Thanks Chresti, I knew you would!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:39pm Matt from New Orleans:

I always forget that Frank Wilson recorded a few other unreleased at the time songs aside from Do I Love You. Were there not even promos of them to make them being stratospherically expensive?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:40pm doctorjazz:

Sidney Barnes not a familiar name, but killer track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:44pm Matt from New Orleans:

Sidney Barnes was in The Rotary Connection Doc. You might have heard him sing with Minnie Riperton in that band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:45pm Matt from New Orleans:

He had a long and fascinating career. A lot of it behind the scenes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:46pm chresti:

I love the guitar on the early Staple Singers
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:47pm Mark Hurst:

@Matt thx for the extra info
@Little Danny, hello, sir
@Dean thanks!
@JtotheK thx & yes I'd recommend that episode, esp since you've seen the movie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:49pm JtotheK:

RE: Sidney Barnes - Mr Fine Wine has spun a great 45 ... about furniture. Numero says: "The Ember Song” is a production of Richard Pegue, featuring Rotary Connection’s Sidney Barnes, recorded for The Ember Furniture Co. in 1969."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:50pm doctorjazz:

I do remember Rotary Connection very well, big on radio back in the day. Thanks for the info, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:50pm Matt from New Orleans:

I remember that one Jason
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:52pm Matt from New Orleans:

Sidney Barnes also was heavily involved in the George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic Universe in the 70s while still working with Minnie once she went solo
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:54pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’ll stop there before I bore you all. Not a well known name but one worth digging into.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:56pm Little Danny:

Sorry y'all, gotta get my shit lined up over here. BRB
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:57pm Matt from New Orleans:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 10:58pm JtotheK:

@Matt - isn't Sidney Barnes the 'Si' of the Record Producer trio 'Geo-Si-Mik' ? (A credit on numerous soul 45s...)
  Thu. 5/30/19 11:00pm Doug Schulkind:

¡El Daniel Grande!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:02pm Matt from New Orleans:

Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 11:03pm geezerette:

Danny, lots of less-is-more in the music tonight. Love that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:04pm Little Danny:

Wow, thanks for the knowledge Matt and J2tK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:05pm Matt from New Orleans:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:06pm chresti:

Great first hour, Little Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:07pm Little Danny:

OMG Doug every time you stop by I get all nervous and gushy
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:08pm Matt from New Orleans:

Mike Terry was a saxophonist who played on countless Motown hits
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:10pm JtotheK:

Yeah, any time I see 'Geo-Si-Mik' on a 45 I know it's worth a listen. Theresa Lindsey "I'll Bet You" on Golden World is another such 45. Sidney Barnes "Talkin' 'Bout A Shindig" is a personal fave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:10pm Little Danny:

Ahhh, thank you Ignore F! Always delighted when you pop up here
  Thu. 5/30/19 11:11pm Doug Schulkind:

We are a mutual gush society, LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:11pm Matt from New Orleans:

He left Motown and became a producer arranger but moved around all the time so isn’t really associated with one label after leaving Motown. He also played sax on a bunch on great songs after leaving Motown. Worth looking into as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:11pm Little Danny:

Oooohhh that is some good stuff, Jason. It will be integrated into my OCD lifestyle post haste
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:12pm Little Danny:

You're the best, geez. Glad you're diggin' it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:14pm JtotheK:

Re: Mike Terry -- see Mr Fine Wine program - wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:15pm Matt from New Orleans:

Three of my fave post Motown mike Terry sax contributions are Darrell Banks open the door to your heart and Jackie Wilson higher and higher and Edwin Starr SOS
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:16pm Matt from New Orleans:

I remember that show. Thanks Jason.

Apologies, I don't think I'd ever actually bothered to pay attention to the lyrics of "Get Tough" before. Oof
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

I heard it years ago on Larry’s blog but forgot about it since then.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 11:23pm geezerette:

Smokin' show !
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:23pm JtotheK:

Re: Stokin' -- the title brings to mind a certain similarly titled track by Clarence Carter that is bound to return to the WMFU airwaves since SM Ken is back on Wednesdays... (I hope he spins it on his first show because I laugh every time I hear it. Every. Time.)
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 11:32pm northguineahills:

  Thu. 5/30/19 11:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:40pm Little Danny:

@Doug: Oh yes you would. I bet you are right now, as a matter of fact!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:42pm JtotheK:

Those interested in Sounds of the City -- the LP is currently available on discogs for a paltry $3600.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:44pm Little Danny:

But the 45 is much cheaper!

I've never actually heard the LP - have you heard it Jason?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:45pm Little Danny:

Dang, some '90s classiques this evening. Unrest, Air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 11:45pm chresti:

..the sounds of the city, ain't they pretty.
