We had lots of crazy thunder and lightning but thankfully not much wind and no hail that I saw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:12pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

howdy, testifiers! checked with all my pals in the Lawrence, Kansas area and so far everyone got thru that tornado ok.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:13pm Erica:

Good for you Granny!
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Strangely, Jim Doval and The Gauchos also cut some records that could be classified as surf music. there was this weird animosity between surfers in L,A. in the sixties and some Mexican American kids(not me!) it was very real.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:14pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Granny!
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:14pm Franco Twinkie:

The Premiers were from San Gabriel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:14pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - The Chicano bands were playing ALL KINDS of music. Stay tuned!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:15pm doctorjazz:

i have had hypnotherapy, and so my testifying is questionable
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:17pm Franco Twinkie:

True that, Larry. But there was also this social aspect that went hand in hand with the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:18pm Funky16Corners:

The cool thing is, many of these groups were integrated, some with Chicano, black and white members all together
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:19pm Matt from New Orleans:

I zoned out doing work and missed the first 15 minutes. Glad to be hear listening to Larry for the 4th time live in the last five days.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:26pm doctorjazz:

What speaker did you get, GST?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - You are correct!
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Regarding The Atlantics - i think they were referencing Atlantic Blvd that skirted East L.A. and ran all the way to the beach and cut through many Mexican American communities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:31pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m a big fan of this Vicky Gomez
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

Me too. I was very happy to find a copy of this 45.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:32pm Erica:

Sounds like Motown
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:32pm Matt from New Orleans:

Is your copy worn down from playing it Larry? It sounds like the grooves are separating.

Good one Franco! Sounds like pig noises to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:42pm Funky16Corners:

They were actually the Sinners, the house band from Hollywood A Go Go. I have no idea if they were contractually prohibited from recording using that name or what, but they sound like they played live a lot, probably at every club in Hollywood
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

I was referring to Tony, Vic and Manuel
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes.

Great typo - Lan of 1,000 Dances. That's what you call the external drive where you keep all your dance music.

@Erica - Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

Get ready, the next song will make your hair stand on end (in a good way).
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:54pm northguineahills:

I told Marcel et al when I got home late last night from trivia, but a women came in that was friends w/ one of my trivia partners looked off. It turns out her ex stalked her there to the bar, so me and her friend shielded her, and I just engaged in friendly conversation and tried not to do anything that could be construed as flirty, as the guy looked like he could destroy me. After she two beers, I saw them off in a car, and hope all went well. I was scared, but played it cool.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:54pm Parq:

Erica, did you know they're introducing new iPods? The top model will be 256 GB and $400.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:54pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:55pm Franco Twinkie:

Forgive me, I think I already said this once. I watched Thee Midnighters practice one time. It was in a garage a few blocks from my house. I just followed the booming sound. I was ten years old.

@FRanco - I'll say it again, I am very jealous!
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:56pm Erica:

  Wed. 5/29/19 10:57pm rw:

I feel like this show was put together with Franco in mind.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 10:57pm Erica:

Plus that's too expensive for an mp3 player anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 10:59pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Both of the Giant Crab albums are excellent
  Wed. 5/29/19 11:00pm rw:

That Thee Midniters track was fucking out of control.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:00pm doctorjazz:

Seems an iPod is irrelevant these days, unless they went for a higher end sound (there are boutique audiophile music players out there). Otherwise, why not just use your phone for music (as my kids, and most folks out there, do).
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:00pm Franco Twinkie:

RW! Yes. A lot of this was the sonic wall paper of my youth. At least one room of the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

I have to have my 160GB iPod. I have a back up in case it fails
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - Jump Jive and Harmonize is one of the hardest hitting records ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:01pm Matt from New Orleans:

You all are looking at the new iPod touch from its utility to you personally but there’s lot of other scenarios for it
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:03pm northguineahills:

I have a lot of SoCal 1940s Chicano music, does that count?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:04pm Funky16Corners:

It does (musically) but not in this context. I'll have to dig out Lalo Guerrero's 'Marihuana' some time
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:04pm northguineahills:

The Pachuco Boogie comp is a good primer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:04pm chresti:

1940s counts
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

well, i have (supposedly anyway) disengaged my phone from the internet. no gobble; no gps...
anyway, do i need an endless selection of music wherever i go, when i listen to music constantly at home;
and i have music in my head?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:04pm doctorjazz:

I actually do use portableplayers...i have Neil Young's Pono (which met a sad commercial death), and a Pioneer xdp 300r, both of which are pretty nice sounding (handle high resolution files and all that audiophile geeky stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

I know i'm going to have to find an iPod replacement at some point, because I too need to carry an endless supply of music in my pocket
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:06pm Matt from New Orleans:

I listen to high res audio on my iPhone. You have to do it in a roundabout way but it works.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:06pm Erica:

I mostly store music on my laptops (I have a spare in case my main one has problems) and multiple 32GB flash drives.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:07pm Franco Twinkie:

It was so funny when a lot of vatos went "hippie." We lived next door to some real hard ass drug dealers in the sixties. When they moved in they were total Lincoln Heights cholos, but then acid came in. It was our neighborhood sit com.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:08pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

i still have and use my very decrepit old ipod for road trips
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

i think if i continued to bombared my mind with music everywhere i go as i do when i'm home (and sometimes at work and often in the car) i'd drown my own creative mind.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:08pm northguineahills:

I carry music in my head when on the go, or wfmu on my phone....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:09pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Franco Twinkie: i would watch that sitcom
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:09pm doctorjazz:

I didn't think the iPhone handled high rez files...you must use a different music playing software on it. I thought it still had a limit on size of files (24/96), but I'm not sure it's easy to tell those from higher bit rate files.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:10pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

and Larry, i can't resist, i do get up and dance every so often, this set is sizzzzlin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:11pm Matt from New Orleans:

You are correct it won’t output more than 24/96 using vlc but on the go it’s doubtful you’d be able to notice the down res from 192 kHz if your files are at that rate
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:11pm northguineahills:

hahaha, Larry!
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:13pm Erica:

Y'deebedee That's all folks!
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:13pm Erica:

Sorry. Couldn't resist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:14pm Matt from New Orleans:

Also need to use an external DAC to make it work as well. The DAC will need to plug into the lightning port
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:16pm northguineahills:

Franco, you might like my collection of Mexican 78s from 1920s-1950s. I scoured junk stores in Mty and DF for them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:18pm Matt from New Orleans:

I bought some in ear headphones from a company called 1more that has built in DAC and plugs into the lightning port. They were fairly reasonable for the sound quality. They discontinued the model I purchased. I wasn’t trying to make it more complicated with a DAC dongle and the headphones plugged into that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:18pm doctorjazz:

I've hooked my players to external dac/amps (have a set up with an iPad 3), but it's easier to just use the Pono or Pioneer in most instances.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:20pm Franco Twinkie:

NGH! Totally! I just dug out a box of 78's this morning for later study.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

That requires me to carry an additional device with me. No need to step back in time carrying an iPod and a flip phone everywhere now my pockets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

Everywhere in my pockets

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:22pm Funky16Corners:

Thee Midnighters, the Premiers. SoCal cruisin’ tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:24pm doctorjazz:

Audeze has an open, in ear electrostatic headphone in an iPhone and non iPhone version. The iPhone version has a built in dac, pretty nice sounding, but really silly looking.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:25pm northguineahills:

In my experience, the junkier and more clutter to the store, and the older the proprietor, no matter which country, the better find. (see my Cage and Xenakis finds in Bed-Stuy in a 6' pile of vinyl....

We're moving into the Latin sound...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:29pm Matt from New Orleans:

The 1mores are far more rudimentary than the audeze’s seem to be at least with the cypher cable
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:29pm Parq:

I gotta have my iPod 180G when I'm driving. Can't depend on the vageries of connectivity that streaming takes.

Like what Granny said.

the rest of the time i sing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:36pm Matt from New Orleans:

It is part of a station with an fcc license so that might affect the situation. Whereas a completely digital station streaming over the internet has no fcc concerns whatsoever.

I listen to WFMU in my car on some days, and I'm 1500 miles away from the nearest antenna...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:39pm chresti:

I curse when I drive
  Wed. 5/29/19 11:39pm Carmichael:

I love a creative cusser. I’m a foul mouthed bastard, but I try to mix it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:40pm Matt from New Orleans:

It wasn’t in response to you specifically Erica but I don’t disagree with your sentiment. But to many women in the US, the c word is a big no no. In the UK, the c word stigma doesn’t seem to exist.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:40pm coelacanth∅:

ngh what do you mean? via frequency modulation?
is that possible?!
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:41pm Franco Twinkie:

I swear so much people think I'm mentally defective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:41pm doctorjazz:

Seems the stream DJs have no problem cursing on air, so the chart board should be ok.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:41pm Erica:

Yeah, I only swear occasionally anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:42pm Funky16Corners:

I'm always yelling stuff like 'MOVE IT GRANDPA!" and then I pull up next to them and I'm like, 'Oh shit, that guy looks like he's my age'. Touche...
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:42pm Erica:

Only when very angry, doing impressions or quoting something, if I have to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:42pm chresti:

I modified my cussing after having a baby, when he grew up, I learned the term "cluster fuck" from him.
  Wed. 5/29/19 11:43pm Carmichael:

It means something very different in the UK, like a dizzy idiot. The f word is tolerable in social circles, as is “bloody”. But don’t say “bleedin’ “, as that is intolerable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:43pm doctorjazz:

Sounds like a great party the Village Callers are at!
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:43pm coelacanth∅:

i'd sure rather hear/see someone say/type Fuck than some ridiculousness like "effin'" or whatever...when it means fucking so everyone who sees it *thinks* fucking so what the hell's the point of not saying it?
stupid. sorry.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:44pm Erica:

Yeah I used to swear a lot as a kid (I was bad lol) but out of joking around. But as I got older, it came back to me and I became more afraid to curse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:44pm Matt from New Orleans:

NGH I find it incredibly hard to believe that you’re getting a WFMU signal on the panhandle. There’s clearly no line of site as the earth curves between the closest transmitter and Florida.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:45pm northguineahills:

what if I'm Irish and I say feck, coel, you feckin' feck! :p (just joshing, and not Irish).
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:45pm Erica:

"Effin" is for people who are too scared say or don't feel like saying the actual F word (at least that's how I see it).
  Wed. 5/29/19 11:45pm Carmichael:

I’m Irish, so cursing is our native language. Ye feck, yah.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:46pm coelacanth∅:

@11.40 Matt -though it seems most women who cring at "the c word" have no trouble calling a guy a dick
  Wed. 5/29/19 11:46pm Dean:

Just tuning in, and I see there's a thread pertaining to foul language, a topic near and dear to my heart. Very encouraging. I tell my kids my favorite local bus line is the F San Francisco, because, well, "F San Francisco!" They know well what F means. As for euphemisms, I prefer "friggin'" to "effin'." And did you know that "euphemism" is a euphemism for "bullshit"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:46pm doctorjazz:

It does seem amazing to get FMU out there, I can barely get it on Staten Island (unless you stream via phone or something along those lines).
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:46pm northguineahills:

@Matt: My car stereo gets WFMU from my phone. I'm technically barely in peninsular FL (thank ye goddesses, I could deal w/ the panhandle).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:47pm Funky16Corners:

I'm with George Carlin in that 'shit' is just another word for 'stuff'.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:48pm Erica:

One sentence about one thing leads to a conversation about it Dean. Can't mention what you've had for dinner and we end up talking about food restaurants lol.
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:48pm Franco Twinkie:

The best swearing is in Spanish. Check out WPLJ by the Mother of Invention. Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl Black are beyond hilarious.
  Wed. 5/29/19 11:49pm Dean:

My homies, El Chicano, nice.

Dinner, Erica? I had some shit or another.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:49pm doctorjazz:

This El Chicano track is Hot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 5/29/19 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

Which one, Doc?
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:50pm northguineahills:

When I was in Brooklyn, I couldn't get a WFMU radio signal until I was south and west of Prospect Park.

@Franco: Don't get me started, my wife has called me every name in the book, even ones my other Latino friends have never heard...
Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:50pm coelacanth∅:

yeah if i'm around children (not all children) or in certain other situations i might say "ficken", because, at least it's a real word.

Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:53pm Erica:

Avatar Wed. 5/29/19 11:53pm coelacanth∅:

i didn't know "feck" was an irish thing.
tom wolf used that a lot in electric koolaid acid test and i thought what a copout; but then later he used "fucking" too.
