Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 7:10pm Erica:

Not saying it will happen, although it did that one summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 7:10pm Funky16Corners:

Yikes! The radar map is showing some ugly stuff headed through here around 8:30. If I suddenly disappear from the air you'll know why.

He only recorded between 1965 and 1971, then went off the grid.
Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 7:43pm northguineahills:

Is Peas and Rice the Jamaican meaning (beans and rice)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 7:44pm Funky16Corners:

I'm not sure. I always assumed it was a soul food thing, but it's possible it came from the West Indies, i.e. pigeon peas and rice
Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 7:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay Larry, settle this: Chresti says My Babe is a corruption of and old gospel number, I say he's just jazzing up Jimmy Reed. What do you say, oh wise one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 7:47pm Funky16Corners:

Based on 'This Train Is Bound For Glory', so gospel roots it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 7:48pm Funky16Corners:

First secularized by Rosetta Tharpe, then Little Walter, then Jimmy Reed and everyone else (I think). The exact chronology may be off

Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 7:59pm northguineahills:

@Larry: I first heard the term 'peas and rice' in Jamaica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 8:00pm Funky16Corners:

I've had amazing peas and rice in West Indian restaurants down in DC.
Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 8:07pm northguineahills:

There's an elderly Jamaican couple that makes amazing Jamaican cuisine in the ghetto here for a good price (and it's the real thing, and make their own scotch bonnet hot sauce (if you ask), like I remember from Bed-Stuy). 8 blocks away in the trendy student district, there's an expensive "Reggae Shack" that is.... meh....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 8:09pm Funky16Corners:

My buddy in DC is married to a lady from Trinidad, and he took me to some cool, REAL places down there. I don't know if I'm ready for scotch bonnett hot sauce, but it was spicy

haha Larry (I got the reference).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 8:20pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks, Martinibomb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 8:21pm Funky16Corners:

I like heat, but only so much as it enhances flavor. We eat Vietnamese, Thai, Korean all the time and I try to cook spicy here at home but never too much. My fave hot sauce is still green Tabasco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Tue. 5/28/19 8:23pm chresti:

I can't take much heat anymore
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 8:23pm Funky16Corners:

If it's too much it kind of burns the flavor out of things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 8:24pm Funky16Corners:

Though I should say that one of my all time faves is the spicy Vietnamese beef soup
  Tue. 5/28/19 8:25pm Dean:

*Some* super hot spices/sauces overwhelm everything else. Others do not, to my palate.
Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 8:25pm Erica:

Speaking of heat, it was so hot yesterday. My mom thought otherwise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 8:26pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean!
Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 8:26pm Erica:

Perfect weather for a BBQ.
Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 8:26pm northguineahills:

I'm at the point, I rub my eyes after cutting ghosts, it's just annoying to me.

Ghosts have a good complex, almost citrusy flavor, Carolina reapers are nothing but pure heat, w/o much flavor. I usually mix in jalapenos and my poblanos to make a more flavorful salsa....
Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 8:27pm Martinibomb:

I'm into making hot chili oil lately

I wish I could remember, if I ever knew, the name of the woman who played organ (and thus bass pedals) for Big Jay McNeely when he had a regular gig c.'89 on the outskirts of East L.A. in a dive bar. She was killer. Sang, too.

Some night I'll have to do a longer feature on female Hammond players. There were a bunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:08pm doctorjazz:

Do females play Hammond Organ differently?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:09pm Funky16Corners:

I can't imagine why they would. I just dig finding female players because it's a male dominated instrument
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:11pm fleep:

What are the female dominated instruments?
Avatar Tue. 5/28/19 9:12pm Erica:

It shouldn't matter WHO plays any instrument as long as you CAN play it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:13pm Funky16Corners:

@Fleep - I don't know of any.
@Erica - You are correct.
  Tue. 5/28/19 9:14pm Dean:

There aren't necessarily female dominated instruments, though there may be, but Hammond celebrities of the XY persuasion easily outnumber the XX.
  Tue. 5/28/19 9:15pm Dean:

That, I take it, is sorta the point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:15pm Funky16Corners:

In jazz especially during the classic era, 40s/50s/60s there weren't a lot of female players that got the kind of shine they deserved. I can't think of a single well known bebop or hard bop player. You have Mary Lou Williams and Melba Liston early on, but in the 60s you started to see women moving into the forefront in jazz for the first time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:16pm coelacanth∅:

i have a recording of Leadbelly explaining why he sang smutty songs in the early days of his career it was because the piano was a females' instrument and he "didn't want the feminine thing on" so the smuttiness was to counter any ideas that he wasn't manly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:19pm fleep:

Pianos as a female instrument. I guess because prior to recorded music, daughters were expected to play piano for the household?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Tue. 5/28/19 9:19pm chresti:

Harps, keyboards...females
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:19pm Funky16Corners:

Or because pianos were in the house, as opposed to something you had to go out and get.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:20pm coelacanth∅:

flute, violin
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

a few centuries ago women in the upper classes were often expected to learn the violin
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:21pm Funky16Corners:

Before the late 50s you saw women mainly as vocalists or sometime pianists. Moving on you started to see folks like Carla Bley (composer pianist), Bobbie Humphrey, Dorothy Ashby, Toshiko Akioshi, Joanne Brackeen etc
  Tue. 5/28/19 9:21pm Dean:

Earlier today I read a review of a mass by Josquin (and others) based on a 14thC French folk song with filthy lyrics. The reviewer--who knows his shit--suggests Renaissance composers made this kind of "juxtaposition [of] holy texts and those expressing earthy humor to envision the range of celestial creation."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/28/19 9:23pm Funky16Corners:

Maybe like the monks who were sneaking dirty stuff into illuminated manuscripts?

Long ago my buddies and I staged a performance of a late Medieval (for England) morality play, The Merry Play between John John the Husband, Tib his Wife, and Sir John, the Priest, by John Heywood. It was a little off-color.

Not to be confused with jazz fusion and smooth jazz songs that count as yacht rock. Very jazz Steely Dan cover by the way.

@Dean - Yes, indeed.

He won a scholarship to Berklee when he was young, living in New Zealand. I think he joined Woody's band not long after graduation, but it's hard finding albums on which he plays. His arrangements are easier to locate.

I think he was with Woody for most of the 70s

During which decade he worked with singer Irene Kral. Those albums are really lovely.

Sister of Roy Kral, right?

This version of FM sounds like jazz meets disco.

If I knew before, I'd forgotten. It appears so. Not to be confused with Diane Krall, with whom Broadbent works to this day.
