Hey-o! You recovered from Friday, @UM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 8:59am Uncle Michael:

I roll with the punches, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:00am listener james from westwood:

How do you do, fellow kids?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:00am Jeff Golick:

Well...I didn't care for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:01am Uncle Michael:

Thank you. You'll more or less get to enjoy that semi-planned show this Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:02am Uncle Michael:

I can see for Miles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:02am Jeff Golick:

@listener james! What is up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:02am Jeff Golick:

@UM: that sort of thing would've really set me off/set me back.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:04am Uncle Michael:

I dunno...it probably would have. I just prosecuted a solution until there clearly was none, then shrugged. The streaming box and the router weren't speaking. After I rebooted the router, it wasn't speaking to anything. I have changed out the router and all should be well for next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:06am Uncle Michael:

Not much...just Miles.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:20am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @UM.

i was in my kitchen cooking listening to the show on my speaker and i thought the Destination Out music sounded kind of weird (i mean weirder than usual). finally discovered that i also had my KLH radio on tuned to the whrb morning blues show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 9:42am Jeff Golick:

Ha! Good ears, @hyde. There's weird, and there's weird.

Received my "winnings" from the marathon as well. Still haven't selected swag, maybe this weekend.

Started some Spring cleaning/organizing myself...in addition to the sealed, don't remember buying them items, found the "already have them" items, and some "what the he'll was I thinking" items
  Sun. 5/26/19 9:47am Listener Gregory:

Then I will insist on thinking of Tuesday as Monday, Wednesday as Tuesday, etc. The result is that I'm sorry but I won't get to hear next week's show, which did not appear on Monday as expected.

  Sun. 5/26/19 10:35am Listener Gregory:

Is this Miles on organ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 10:36am Jeff Golick:

Yes, @LG.
  Sun. 5/26/19 10:49am Listener Gregory:

I am probably the only listener who is finding almost all of this show unfamiliar. I know I've heard some of it, but it's not in my regular rotation. So, this is quite interesting, though I also do look forward to the final set consisting entirely of performances of "If I Were a Bell."
  Sun. 5/26/19 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

I’m sensing a theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Gonna need six more hours to make it that far, @LG.
  Sun. 5/26/19 10:56am Listener Gregory:

I'm up for it, Jeff. Also, consider one hour of Bill Evans playing Nardis, which some research has revealed that Miles actually wrote even though he never played it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 10:58am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: Yoga is working wonders for you.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

You can smell me from there.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:04am Dean:

Ninety-three? He probably wouldn't have lived this long if he'd lived this long.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:09am Listener Gregory:

When we get to his time with Charlie Parker, I'll explain how Miles is the actual composer of Donna Lee. I love telling that story.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

My beloved Jessie once shared a flight from New Orleans to NYC with Miles and Cicely Tyson. They were in first class, each wearing full-length white fur coats (it was not winter), and Jessie was in the back, hanging out and smoking with Miles’ road manager and crew, with whom she shared a cab back to Manhattan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Dean. Oh yes. Indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:13am Jeff Golick:

Jessie is a queen among mere mortals, @Doug. I think Tyson had a hand in getting Davis out of the house during his black-out years, and helped usher in his 1980s return.... Unless I"m totally wrong about that.
Avatar Sun. 5/26/19 11:13am hyde:

this is good music for making seaweed salad
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:14am doctorjazz:

Hydration break, done about 9 miles, about 14 to go (tho hilly part coming now).
Saw Miles late in his career, after he had a sorta hit with Time After Time. He spent almost all his time at keyboards, just picking up his trumpet here and there. Makes sense; trumpet is supposed to be very hard to play, physically. Benny Carter, who played alto and trumpet early on, gave up trumpet as he got older. Roy Eldridge, late in his career, mostly played piano.

Ok, up the hill I go....
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:16am Dean:

doctorjazz's comment explains why there are so few French horn, oboe, or bassoon jazz virtuosi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:16am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Made it here for the last few Miles…
Avatar Sun. 5/26/19 11:17am hyde:

yeah, switching from wind instruments to keyboards in late career seems beneficial.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

Tyson helped Miles dry out and physically rehab after his stroke in ‘82. Back on that flight from New Orleans, I believe the report was that she was as high as Miles was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Yay, @Granny Spicy Tuna!
Avatar Sun. 5/26/19 11:18am Sem:

Your Miles morning is making my kitchen morning a blast. Thank you for this show, the many moods of Miles. Much obliged. Jeff.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:19am Dean:

Everybody on that flight was as high as Miles for its duration, weren't they?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:19am Jeff Golick:

So glad to hear it, @Sem.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

I saw Miles only twice, once in ‘81 at the beginning of his comeback, then again in fall of ‘82. Second show was at a theater in the round in Cleveland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:21am Jeff Golick:

How were those shows, @Doug?
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

The shows were pretty good, but it’s hard to hear when you’ve stopped breathing.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Bill Evans was in Miles’ band. But not THAT Bill Evans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:25am Jeff Golick:

An understandable condition, given the situation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:27am Jeff Golick:

Here's a Miles concert review snippet from around 1972: "[this music] is someone clearing their throat, cats fighting in the alley, a kid dragging a stick along a picket fence, a dog howling in the night, or even fingernails screeching against a blackboard, a most nerve-wracking sound. And what's worse? All of that going on at the same time... Now, it's usual for musicians to warm up and tune up before actually going into their performance and Davis followed suite [sic]. However, the entire performance sounded as if it was a continuous tuning up. Imagine 45 minutes of people tuning instruments!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:28am Jeff Golick:

That's via the invaluable Miles discographical site plosin.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:28am Uncle Michael:

I'd walk a camel for some Miles.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:28am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, that's funny! To think about people even tuning up their instruments!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:28am Jeff Golick:

I'd walk that camel through the eye of a needle.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:29am Listener Gregory:

Maybe the musicians were playing a game of Name that Tuning?
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:32am Dean:

Ravi Shankar told a variation of that joke about tuning up at the Concert for Bangla Desh in August '71!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:34am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I'd thread that needle with The Eternal Now.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:37am Listener Gregory:

From Allmusic.com on this album: The set lists vary but offer something remarkable as a whole: The only period where Davis played music from his bebop, hard bop, modal, and electric eras on one tour.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

The sound of his horn is spectacular on this number. Each note had its own propulsive power.
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:42am Listener Gregory:

Amazingly, every band member except Davis is still alive and very active 50 years later: Corea, Shorter, Holland, & DeJohnette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:47am Jeff Golick:

That's pretty amazing, @LG.
Avatar Sun. 5/26/19 11:49am hyde:

this was a great show. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:50am Jeff Golick:

"My band has Herbie Hancock AND Chick Corea. Who does your band have?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:50am Jeff Golick:

My absolute pleasure, @hyde. So glad you were here for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:51am doctorjazz:

Thanks for the biking sound track, Jeff, helping me power through. Great week, all (6-7 Miles still to go...)
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:54am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, the crazy thing is that you could make that joke about any instrument in his bands, and it would be just as good. "My horn section is John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. What's yours?"
  Sun. 5/26/19 11:54am Listener Gregory:

By the way, I can tell that we're getting very close to "If I Were a Bell"!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:55am Jeff Golick:

So close, @LG, but I hate to tell you this...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:56am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: glad to be along for your ride!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:56am Granny Spicy Tuna:

been enjoying this very much, thank you, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 11:57am Jeff Golick:

Great to have you here for it, as always, @GST!
  Sun. 5/26/19 12:00pm Dean:

I remember finding a bunch of close-out LPs of early-ish Miles at Tower Records, those Prestige reissues. Grabbed a few. Glad I have 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 12:00pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the great show, Jeff.
  Sun. 5/26/19 12:00pm Listener Gregory:

Jeff, if I were a bell, I'd go "ding dong ding dong ding!" But I'm not, so just thanks for a great show.
Will be AWOL next week but will catch the archive.
  Sun. 5/26/19 12:03pm Dean:

Maybe WKCR has never heard of him?
  Sun. 5/26/19 12:05pm Listener Gregory:

Also, very late comment, if there were a Miles Davis church, it would have to have an expletive in its name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/26/19 12:07pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks and bye-ya, @UM, @LG, @ho; @ljfw; @coel; and all!
