Hi! I'm here. My computer is also here, but a tad sluggish. We will be starting shortly. Thanks for coming by!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:01am listener james from westwood:

Happy gloomy Record Fair Sunday, Jeff and all! Hoping this brings out the bargain hunters who'd otherwise enjoy spring weather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:02am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @listener james! And to you. Have you made the fair?
  Sun. 4/28/19 9:03am Listener Gregory:

Q: If I come early today, does it make up for missing last week?
A: No.
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 9:03am hyde:

gooood morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:04am Jeff Golick:

@Listener Gregory: early in this case gets you less than nothing. Sorry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:06am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:10am listener james from westwood:

Cheese danish on this side, coffee to come.
  Sun. 4/28/19 9:11am Listener Gregory:

My weather app says that there is a significant chance of rain every hour today. Then it summarizes the day's weather as "sunny." This seems optimistic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:11am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Can't do the fair anymore, owing to the distance and unknowns on getting there not playing nice w/ anxiety. Kills me as I always used to volunteer for most or all of the weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:14am Jeff Golick:

Yes, @Listener Gregory. Tech in action! Let the algorithm be your umbrella.

@ljfw: I feel you. I think the last time I went, it was when the fair happened in Chelsea. Intra-Brooklyn commuting isn't all that easy, either. The MTA isn't helping any of us, of course.
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 9:18am hyde:

i looked at the massachusetts weater yesterday, and it said it was gonna rain for 11 of the next 14 days
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:20am Jeff Golick:

I guess that familiar New England refrain -- "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute." -- is now defunct.
  Sun. 4/28/19 9:22am Mark R:

It's exciting to hear new music from the Art Ensemble, and the way that Roscoe and Donald Moye have assembled a talented group of characters around them to keep their legacy alive and growing. This track is excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:24am Jeff Golick:

I agree, @Mark R! So exciting; love those guys so much, and yeah, they've really made an effort to expand the group and include some great new players.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:25am Jeff Golick:

Fair warning: if you don't like this "Femenine" riff, you might want to check out and come back around 10:30.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:33am Guido from Cologne:

I'm pretty sure I remember this Julius Eastman composition from back in the 80ies or early 90ies so. But forgot about the context.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Guido from Cologne! I think he first performed it in the mid-1970s, so your recollection seems likely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:38am doctorjazz:

Hi Jeff...doing my best to AVOID going to the. Record Fair .(for obvious reasons...). Successful so far.,.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 9:40am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @doctorjazz! Ha. Yes.

BTW, if you're looking to a/b this performance with Eastman's original, I played his version from '74 on the show a couple years back, when frozen reeds first released it: wfmu.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:02am Jeff Golick:

Very good of you, @Brian. Does your manse have a name? Always loved that quality of British addresses.
  Sun. 4/28/19 10:03am Listener Gregory:

"Brianhenge" is a good name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:03am Jeff Golick:

@LG: you've missed a lot, and not much at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:07am Jeff Golick:

In case any copyeditors out there are having fits, the track name "Femenine" is [sic].
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:08am Brian in UK:

The Orchard.

@LG bit too Tap for me. Though dwarves dancing round a minature Henge would be fun. Saying that, as I was drifting off painting as you do. I had this vision of short people as coffin bearers at my funeral.
  Sun. 4/28/19 10:09am Listener Gregory:

I like how the piece has transitioned from all Morton Feldman to... well, something else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:09am Brian in UK:

Jeff, my favourite English village name recently was Numpnett Thrubwell. In Somerset.
  Sun. 4/28/19 10:11am Mark R:

Man, you weren't kidding about this piece lasting until 10:30!
  Sun. 4/28/19 10:11am Mark R:

But if you can't hear an hour-long piece of music on D:O, where are you gonna hear it?
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 10:14am coelacanth∅:

Brian @10.08 i can't help but picture the front of "all things must pass" now
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:15am doctorjazz:

It's a lovely piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:15am Jeff Golick:

Well...Avant Ghetto...The Long Rally...JA in the AM...Bryce's show...I could go on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:16am Jeff Golick:

I thought Numpnett Thrubwell might've brought Doug out of the weeds to remark about his high school band of that name...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:21am Brian in UK:

Jeff, that was his Science teacher in skool.

@coelacanth∅, oh yes and they listened.

  Sun. 4/28/19 10:30am Mark R:

Good point, Jeff! Besides other FMU shows, though, I don't think it's gonna happen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:30am doctorjazz:

Just reading about the piece, we wondering how much was composed, how much improvised. Seems Eastman just composed fragments, the ensemble fills in the rest. Cool.

New Amsterdam has apparently teamed up with Nonesuch Records, which might get it wider attention and distribution. The Shaw disc is the first in their partnership (according to their PR).

@LG: that explains the curious dual info @ Discogs.
  Sun. 4/28/19 10:53am Mark R:

I just heard that Caroline Shaw/Attacca record for the first time this week--it's gorgeous. I guess she was the youngest person to ever win the Pulitzer Prize for Music (age 30) in 2013.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 10:54am Jeff Golick:

Oh yeah? Well, that seems deserved. It has hard to pick a cut from that record.
  Sun. 4/28/19 10:54am Mark R:

BTW the Attacca Quartet are going to be part of the Chamber Music American Celebration at Harlem Stage on May 31st (not playing this piece, but still...)

Re: this Dylan... do we want to hear the genius sausage being made?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:05am Jeff Golick:

It's a fair question, @LG. I appreciate being able to hear something with fresh ears, mostly.
  Sun. 4/28/19 11:08am Listener Gregory:

I do find it interesting, but I also like to believe that great songs sprang fully formed out of the head of their creators.
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 11:11am Peter from DE:

  Sun. 4/28/19 11:28am Listener Gregory:

Lonnie's Lament renamed?
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 11:28am Peter from DE:

JBL quoting Coltrane's "Lonnie's Lament" here. it seems to be part of his approach to mash up jazz classics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:29am Jeff Golick:

@LG: yes, I think it's a reworking. He quotes it at the end there. (As @Peter just noted!)
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 11:30am Peter from DE:

He has one album where he mashes up "Wade in the Water" and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child." I like the idea of Coltrane as on part with those spirituals. But I'm not sure I get what he's going for.
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 11:33am Peter from DE:

This is hitting the spot! Lurie is a new name to me.
  Sun. 4/28/19 11:34am Listener Gregory:

I liked that Lonnie cut. I have a 2019 album of his that was ok but didn't strongly resonate with me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:36am Jeff Golick:

I can't wait for this Lurie group to cut a proper-sounding record of this stuff. She's put two cuts up at bandcamp (link on playlist! pay what you want!), but they're clearly just loft live taping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:38am Jeff Golick:

Not "loft" -- "lo-fi"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:39am doctorjazz:

I just checked her out, I remember her releases as the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxaphone Quartet, must still have that CD somewhere, really liked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:42am Guido from Cologne:

Oh it's Jessica Lurie from the Tipton's Sx Quartett!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:44am doctorjazz:

Yup, I found it, knew I had 1, Box from 1996.
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 11:45am Peter from DE:

The lo-fi aesthetic is working for me, though. Jamming out, echo-y sound, I dig it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:46am Jeff Golick:

Your boxes are arranged chronologically, @doc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:48am Jeff Golick:

(That's not a judgment, btw. My boxes are simply random jumbles of stuff, stuck in a storage unit.)
  Sun. 4/28/19 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Mdou me Mdou me baby, one more time.
  Sun. 4/28/19 11:49am Dean:

  Sun. 4/28/19 11:50am Dean:

Howdy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:51am doctorjazz:

Alphabetically, for the most part. Though as I ran out of room in 1 area, I'd start again in a new area, and rather than start from scratch, is just alphabetize again. So, you could saw it's alphabetized in a chronological fashion (and some is just piled up)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:52am doctorjazz:

I see there were a few other releases, but I think they were small, limited releases (Box was on New World Records)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/28/19 11:55am Jeff Golick:

I only have their "Laws of Motion"
Avatar Sun. 4/28/19 11:56am hyde:
