For more than 25 years, Bob Irwin, the Dean of Sundazed Music, has befuddled, disoriented, and otherwise thrilled collectors and consumers alike by refusing to drive between the lines. Swerving wildly from garage to psych, from surf to soul, from biker to bossa, Bob’s steering with his elbows and hollerin’ like a banshee as he careens all over Route ‘60s, knocking over traffic cones.

The show is called Big Planet Noise! – and it’s hosted by Bob and Gina Frary Bacon, the gal with the great voice. It’s almost always all-vinyl, from Bob’s insane collection. The show became a must-listen in Nashville, a town unaccustomed to such carryings-on, and it’s now primed to become a part of your not-too-proud-to-be-surprised lives. Strap in and head to WFMU.org’s Rock ’n’ Soul Ichiban stream, every Monday from 8-10 pm EST!

That rising pitch sound at the end of the intro of the Missing Links song. The oscillators rise in pitch as power dies.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:19pm Julie P.:

The keyboard player in my high school band had a Farfisa and a Leslie!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:19pm Gina Bacon:

Oh, wow. I'll have to go back and listen.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:19pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:20pm bigplanetnoise:

Which one, Alex???
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:20pm Snayle:

You make the week right Bob! I got the BPN headset on As Mum watches Antique Roadshow, a '64 Gibson ES 335 just valued at 12-12,500k.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:20pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Friday On My Mind
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:21pm Julie P.:

"This Strange Tomorrow" (taken from a sci-fi novel), and fortunately I don't think there are any recordings extant. Whew!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:21pm Julie P.:

Loved watching the horn in the Leslie spin when he was really crankin'.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:25pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - THAT's a GREAT name!!!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:26pm bigplanetnoise:

Friday on my mind fk yeah so good
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:27pm Julie P.:

We didn't have any original material - we only did covers - but we had a great time: "Pinball Wizard", "White Rabbit", "House of the Rising Sun" to mention the ones I can remember.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:27pm Gina Bacon:

Hi KathrynD!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:27pm Mailman Tom:

The last time I saw a Leslie spin was at a '68 Sly and the Family Stone concert in Central Park NYC.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:27pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - that is SO cool that you were at that show.. Damn....
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:29pm Julie P.:

Yay, Hollies! Hey Bob, is that an alternate mix on "Hold Me Tight"? I don't remember it ending like that.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:29pm Julie P.:

Cool, Mailman!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:30pm bigplanetnoise:

Right off the orig UK LP, Julie Maybe they shortened it for the U.S. release??
  Mon. 4/22/19 8:30pm Alan M:

Hey Bob & Gina! Another great show! Back to the Rascals .... You Better Run is such a great tune! I also think the 1966 "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" is an amazing song and pretty unique for 1966.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:31pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Alan!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:31pm Julie P.:

Alan M., I heartily concur on the Rascals!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:31pm bigplanetnoise:

Alan! Thanks for joining us!!! Yeah - that song came out of nowhere! I love Lori Burton's (the songwriter) version of it, too!!! And there were a zillion covers, too!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:33pm bigplanetnoise:

We've been playing a fair amount of Rascals lately... some of the hits, but lots of LP cuts as well.. They were GODS in upstate NY when I was a kid. Every local band covered nearly everything on every album.
Mon. 4/22/19 8:34pm Tim from LH:

So great to hear early Beatles, Hollies, Stones and now The Pretty Things, thanks Bob!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:35pm bigplanetnoise:

Thanks, Tim! I'm so glad you're digging it! Sometimes it goes pretty obscure, but it's always good to bring out the big boys, too!!!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:36pm Julie P.:

Oh, but the obscure is part of the charm, Bob!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:37pm bigplanetnoise:

Oh, I agree with that, Julie!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:37pm bigplanetnoise:

Always try for a nice blend of familiar and forgotten.....
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:38pm bigplanetnoise:

Mindbenders every week! No???
  Mon. 4/22/19 8:39pm Alan M:

Bob, you are so right. My very first band played a bunch of Rascals tunes and the crowds really loved anything by the Rascals back then. We never got any bottles thrown at us when we stayed on the Rascals course.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:39pm bigplanetnoise:

Alan - hahahaha!!!! I want to know when they thew the bottles!!!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:40pm Julie P.:

I don't remember us covering any Rascals songs, but they definitely got a lot of turntable time.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:41pm Julie P.:

AHHHHHH! "Cool Jerk"!
  Mon. 4/22/19 8:41pm Mary:

Hello, Mary!
  Mon. 4/22/19 8:42pm Jay S.:

Mon. 4/22/19 8:44pm Tim from LH:

Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:44pm bigplanetnoise:

Is there a single Yardbirds song that ANYONE is sick of??? Not for me!!!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:45pm bigplanetnoise:

Tim - Beck all the way!!!!!
Mon. 4/22/19 8:45pm Tim from LH:

Not me!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:46pm Mailman Tom:

I saw the Young Rascals play at Shea Stadium in 1970. It was their final show until they reunited a few years ago and toured as the Rascals (not so young anymore!)
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:46pm vanhooserd:

The first two LPs I bought were Rubber Soul & Having A Rave Up. Along with the KIcks 45. At K-Mart, I think.

Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:50pm Mailman Tom:

Most of the band members were on stage. I wish they had given out program books so I could tell you for certain. At $95 a pop, you would think they would!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 8:51pm Julie P.:

My first 45 was Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man", and my first LP was Gary Lewis and the Playboys' "Golden Greats".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 4/22/19 8:51pm Dominick:

My first 3 45s were purchased at the same time

Enjoying the picks!!

Nez into the Penny Arkade, nice
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:36pm Mailman Tom:

Clear Light was one of the first Rock bands to have two drummers, if I'm not mistaken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 4/22/19 9:37pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Beverly retired after the We Five to raise her family but has been singing again for the last 5 years or so.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:37pm bigplanetnoise:

And Dallas Taylor was one of 'em, right Mailman???
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 4/22/19 9:37pm Uncle Michael:

Clear Light should have been so huge that the Doors would have gotten lost in the shuffle instead of them.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:38pm Julie P.:

Yes, please - Nez every week! Some of his solo stuff too!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:38pm Ronnie Dark:

Cliff DeYoung too! Clear Light. Try finding THAT album in MONO. Took me forever to score a clean copy!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:39pm nostrangerer:

Wow, was in a garage band in the 70s that covered "she does everything ..." and this is the first time for me to hear that version...
  Mon. 4/22/19 9:39pm Eargasm!:

Took me a long time as well. It's tough in mono

Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:40pm Ronnie Dark:

For some reason Eargasm! there are several hard MONO lps to score in great shape: Love "Forever Changes", Buckinghams "Portraits" and Notorious Byrd Bros to name a few

Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:43pm bigplanetnoise:

Can I just say that I LOVE the fact that this was issued as an A-side on a 45?!?!?!?!?!!?!????
  Mon. 4/22/19 9:43pm Eargasm!:

Yeah, seems they were right at the cusp of when stereo became the format of choice. John Wesley Harding in mono isn't falling out of trees either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 4/22/19 9:43pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:44pm Ronnie Dark:

Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:44pm Gina Bacon:

Yeah, that's pretty wild.
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:44pm Ronnie Dark:

It's dirtier sounding. Doesn't translate as well as the stereo version
  Mon. 4/22/19 9:44pm Eargasm!:

What was their A&R guy thinking hahaah
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:45pm bigplanetnoise:

I've had the master, Ronnie. Just never found the LP! A commercial copy of mono "Bookends" continues to elude me as well.

They were smoking the bananas..TOGETHER!
Avatar Mon. 4/22/19 9:46pm Ronnie Dark:
