Ridgewood Radio features concert recordings by adventurous bands and experimental musicians and restored archival tapes from private and institutional collections captured at venues large and small across the five boroughs of New York.   Wed. 4/17/19 3:21pm Michael Schell:

I'm well, and newly retired from a daytime gig that kept me occupied most Wednesday afternoons.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:22pm david w:

Well Schell swell!
  Wed. 4/17/19 3:23pm Michael Schell:

There are some perks to being in Seattle, this past weekend we had what is likely the last ever world premiere of a Partch composition (on the original instruments).
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:25pm northguineahills:

Awesome, Michael!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:25pm david w:

Very cool. Who oversees those instruments nowadays?
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:27pm northguineahills:

Havnen't they moved them to the University of California - San Diego, somewhat lately?
  Wed. 4/17/19 3:28pm Michael Schell:

They're still owned by Danlee Mitchell. Oversight has passed to Charles Corey, who was Dean Drummond's student. They've been housed at University of Washington the past five years. I'll be writing up the event in the next week or two. The premiere was of the first (chamber) version of The Bewitched. It's the last surviving Partch music manuscript that had never been performed before.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:28pm Sem:

Don't mind me, just sitting in my orgone box, speakers set for the heart of the sun.
  Wed. 4/17/19 3:30pm Michael Schell:

northguineahills, might you be thinking of a partial replica set that is used by the (confusingly named) Partch ensemble in San Diego?
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:30pm northguineahills:

Ahh, I remember Irwin having an interview w/ one of curators of his collection about a decade ago....

@Sem: Don't worry, it's the (Wilhelm) Reich thing to do!
  Wed. 4/17/19 3:31pm Michael Schell:

There is also a complete set of replica instruments in Europe that was commissioned by musikFabrik in 2013 for their Goebbels production of Delusion of the Fury. There's some uncertainty over the future of the Partch instrumentarium at UW though, something I'll be reporting on in the review.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:32pm david w:

Sem always comes prepared.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:32pm northguineahills:

I think originally, they were kept at Montclair State (NJ).
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:33pm david w:

I think you all have sorted this Partch thing out pretty well. Michael tell us where we can read your piece.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:33pm Sem:

:-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 3:34pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

what in the hootenanny is going on around here?
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:34pm david w:

As we listen to Cooper-Moore, another wonderful instrument builder!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:35pm geezerette:

Saw a gorgeous, inspiring film called "Mali Blues", think you'll all love it www.nytimes.com... Check out link after show.
Mentioning because this music reminded me.

Michael & all, thanks for Partch info!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:35pm david w:

Hey Granny, maybe I should do an avant-hootenany episode?
  Wed. 4/17/19 3:36pm Michael Schell:

northguineahills, they were at Montclair State during Dean's guardianship, concurrent with all those great Newband concerts. Alas, his death basically ended that arrangements, and the instruments became homeless until they came to UW. Before NJ, the instruments were with Danlee Mitchell, who inherited them from Partch. They spent most of their time in storage in San Diego, being unveiled from time to time for specific productions (e.g., Gaburo's The Bewitched ca. 1983 and Revelation in the Courthouse Park a few years later). I don't know yet where the piece will appear, but probably at Second Inversion or Sequenza 21. I'll get the word out on my Web page (www.schellsburg.com) and on Twitter (@cribbageforum).
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:37pm david w:

Nice tip, geez. will peek.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 3:41pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

i am ready for avant-hootenanny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 3:47pm fred:

Drums and Drones sounds like my kind of live music.
This Fire Over Heaven series is amazing, judging by the excerpts that have been played on this show. I'd probably be a regular there if it wasn't across an ocean
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:47pm david w:

Everybody's tweeters humming?
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:49pm david w:

Fred, you would be guest of honor. Greg Fox started the project and Che Chen (of 75 Dollar Bill) inherited it and is doing a stellar job.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 3:52pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Michael!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 4:01pm geezerette:

This was great! And I'm sure it's even better being in the room
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 4:09pm david w:

Yes, Fred. Those overtones bouncing around the room is unrecordable, and Chase is a delight to watch.

This isgreat (Parker/Rothenberg)!
