re: what you said about name pronunciation last week, I talked about just that with listener Jeroen a couple of weeks ago. Mine is an easy one, as far as European languages go, some drop the first 'r' and/or add a letter, but it basically sounds the same. Jeroen's trickier, but I then brought a local Jérôme into that conversation, and now they're planning to do a show together next month

As a kid in Japan, my mother taught English to daughters of Buddhist priest. He showed me his temple, and let me ride motorcycles, break scrap glass w/ slingshots w/ beans, and I'd play tag w/ him and my bros on their new three story house on the iron girders while it was under construction (never told my mother about the last one, she would have had a stroke). Unfortunately, I never learned what strain of Buddhism he practice, but he was the most awesome adult I knew as a kid.

I wonder if this oppressive rule-based environment is related to how so many Japanese bands can revive stale genres, finding a way to make something new while staying within the established boundaries. Another side to the extreme noise coin maybe

That voice...

fred @1:15 what you said reminded me of the time when I was in high school we all had to wear uniform. Kids would always come up with a new rebellious way to wear it - like wearing it with extremely, EXTREMELY long socks for example - so they were being very creative in a way.

But one thing they never would do is actually trying to change the rule/system to NOT to wear the uniform in the first place. The rebellion rarely gets to that level. I feel like that's how things go there most of the time, not only in music/art.

On a whim, back on Saturday night I went looking for "Godspeed You! Black Emperor". The copy on YouTube had been taken down but I found a copy on the Internet Archive and watched it. It was really good. Stylistically like a Fredrick Weisman documentary. I did note that the only woman to speak in that film was the mother of the boy the film followed through the first half hour or so. I've been musing on feelings of autonomy & freedom since.
