Kimzilla and Emily explore the world of birdwatching, but of course in typical IRL tradition, we couldn’t just talk to a typical birder, nope, instead we talk to Matt Smith who is a published writer, geographer, and web developer who has been chasing birds for most of his life and created a game called Fantasy Birder, where you virtually find birds using crowd sourced data. We also talk to Tony Croasdale, Environmental Education Program Specialist at Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and self- identified member of the DIY anarcho-punk community. Join us as we enter the sub-sub culture of birders (real and imaginary) on In Real Life.

Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:13pm dale:

i had an eastern bluebird for the first time and so i made a couple of houses. as soon as i put them up he disappeared but some other birdies seem to be interested so we'll see what happens.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:14pm Kate:

@dale they DO respond, usually they just look around a bit, but some of them fly up to our window and look in. One of them cussed me out completely.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:17pm Kate:

@dale that is so exciting, I would love to have one eat out of my hand. Online, I've seen hummingbirds drink out of coke bottle caps that people are holding.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:17pm Kate:

@queems I thought all the squirrels were at my house
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:18pm OSC:

Hey~ It is OSC from Nevada. There are geese that visit annually here. They pair for life & each time they fly over my place they are honking & carrying on faster than a gaggle of Spanish women!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:18pm Phillippe Bastille:

The house we are moving to is on a little cove just off the Chesapeake. We've seen mallards, a kingfisher, a blue heron, and an osprey so far. Neighbor says he's seen a wood duck, a red head duck, and a a bald eagle but I have not yet.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:19pm kimzilla:

@Johnzon- It was from the Big List, and yes, Owen Wilson, along with Jack Black and Steve Martin.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:19pm Dez:

Otis is barking at the woodpeckers. ""Its coming from inside the house!!"
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:19pm Danne D:

  Wed. 4/3/19 7:20pm Emily:

@Kate I’ll have to get you one of those hummingbird feeder hats.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:20pm Danne D:

there was a cardinal hanging outside our window today. I think the poor guy was confused he kept flying into the window :(
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:21pm Danne D:

Yez Dez
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:21pm Richard S:

I have a 4th floor apartment; my living room window overlooks a little copse of mixed trees. I have seen so many different species without ever having to step outside.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:22pm Kate:

hummingbird feeder hats are a thing!?!
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:24pm Danne D:

Saddle River County Park in Saddle Brook/Fair Lawn/Paramus is a great source for chasing pokemon go characters as well as cool birds :)
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:25pm fullmetalmonkey:

Great show tonight. Birds rule. I have a small garden on fire escape in Hoboken that has plants and a small bird bath. In the summer all kinds of birds come in and out of garden all day long. If I'm lucky something strange and rare will land in it.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:29pm fullmetalmonkey:

And I've never claimed to see a bird I didn't see :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:30pm Richard S:

It is just so freakin' easy to birdwatch. And it gets you outside, and closer to the natural world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:30pm Phillippe Bastille:

Great show everyone. Chore time and gotta run
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:31pm zpulpa:

Whoa this is inspiring! I want to be a bird watcher!
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:32pm dale:

just buy sunflower seeds. don't get the crap with millet in it. you'll draw the most birds with sunflower seeds and suet cakes.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:33pm fullmetalmonkey:

Watching birds is total Zen. I can feel my blood pressure going down as I'm watching. For real. Lol. Well the wine might also be helping.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:33pm kimzilla:

Hatebeak is featured in this episode! Thanks Jeff Moore for the suggestion!
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:34pm fullmetalmonkey:

Sunflower seeds bring squirrels. Squirrels are the "kill joy" of bird watching.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Sometimes it's neat to see what the birds see. youtu.be...

  Wed. 4/3/19 7:37pm Danne D:

Yez The Cure
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:39pm dale:

ANYTHING brings squirrels. and chipmunks. and deer. and bears. most energy inside sunflower seeds.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:40pm Emily:

The bird is so close to his face! That would make me nervous. That sharp little beak is awfully close to his eyeballs...
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:40pm dale:

..and i enjoy watching them as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:40pm Doug in JC:

There's a peregrine falcon nest on a building a few over from WFMU HQ... you can watch them nesting here: www.conservewildlifenj.org...

I used to be obsessed with bird cams, there was one with these owls, it was great... until it wasn't. Nature can be really sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:42pm Doug in JC:

Oh, yeah. I have Seen Things
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:42pm fullmetalmonkey:

Emily. Cheap sunglasses will solve that phobia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:43pm Doug in JC:

I knew Tony ~20 years ago and had no idea he was a crazy birder until the Audubon article came out
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:45pm Emily:

Or goggles.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:45pm kimzilla:

Who was asking for the duck story?? You got it!
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:45pm Tom:

@Doug in JC That is so cool .. thanks for the turn on!
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:46pm Kate:

@ Emily that feeder is super cool, but I think I might just hold it instead. I don't do well with goggles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:46pm Doug in JC:

@Tom you're welcome! The mom falcon perches on the church behind our house sometimes. It's cool seeing her in action
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:48pm fullmetalmonkey:

@Emily. Googles would be over kill unless the humming bird was carrying a coconut
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:49pm ultradamno:

Birds make me nervous. I think Hitchcock made that movie for me. Like when you see tons of them all lined up on power lines...up to something.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:49pm fullmetalmonkey:

Goggles lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:50pm queems:

i love to watch videos of parrots doing weird stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:51pm chris:

lots of great memories of my pops during this show. he was an avid birder his whole life. he would whistle the bird songs to call them out. now, every time i see or hear a bird, i remember him. good stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

On the farm as a kid, I noticed my dad skip around killdeer nests out in the field. When I was driving the tractor in my teens, I'd also drive around them. Mom killdeer running off faking a broken wing. She probably thought her ruse was effective against the massive roaring tractor that spared her nest.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:52pm Kate:

@fullmetalmonkey hummingbirds can't carry coconuts
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:53pm fullmetalmonkey:

@kimzilla. Fishing is nothing like bird watching. Unless your using bread as bait on the end of a stun gun. Then it would be similar
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:53pm Becky:

Did you guys get my email?!?
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:54pm dale:

i would plow a field a a kid and the robins would follow and pull worms out of the freshly turned furrows.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:54pm fullmetalmonkey:

@kate. If it was a European humming bird perhaps
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

It seems to me that there anren't as many songbirds as there used to be. Plenty of vultures wheeling overhead, though. I don't think I've seen a meadowlark back home for maybe twenty years. I remember hearing their calls around sunset.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:56pm Tom:

@dale and then me and my dad would search for arrow heads and such!
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:56pm Danne D:

uh oh did Becky get swooped away by a giant bird?!? :(

btw Great Show Emily And Kimzilla!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@dale - We'd see gulls come from who-knows-where to follow our plow. No lakes or oceans for miles of the place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:57pm Richard S:

@ken - Habitat loss..... The native songbirds can't handle the urban environment, and are squeezed out by House Sparrows and Starlings (both of which were deliberately introduced from Great Britain).
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:57pm Danne D:

woooo go Path Train!!!! :)
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:58pm ultradamno:

Or at college parties, there was always somebody with their living conversation starter.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:58pm Becky:

I’m on my way!!! Am really close!!!!
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:58pm Kate:

@fullmetalmonkey I think you mean a European swallow.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 7:59pm dale:

ken - go to any mcdonald's parking lot and there they are eating french fries.
  Wed. 4/3/19 7:59pm Danne D:

cool giant bird is bringing Becky to the station :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 7:59pm Richard S:

By the way, Mets up over the Marlins 3-0 after 6; deGrom helps his own cause with a HR
  Wed. 4/3/19 8:00pm fullmetalmonkey:

@kate. Lol yeah that little guy is a heavy lifter
Avatar Wed. 4/3/19 8:01pm ultradamno:

Isn't there an NPR or PBS one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/3/19 8:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

So long, bird-brains!
