Workshop de Lyon also did a great job on the cathedral there.

@hyde: agreed. Just got the reissue treatment, I believe.
@LG: heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 9:41am fred:

I saw a bunch of conservative EU delegates from New Caledonia on the subway this week. The annoying part is that they took up a lot of space and took a lot of time to get off the train, being rude while loudly complaining about young people (which probably means anyone short of 70)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 9:41am Jeff Golick:

Ew.
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 9:46am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff, and hello to the D:O cadre, and curious first time listeners.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Ashville Jon! Yeah, I heard this on Jeff Conklin's show recently, and that was my reaction, too.
  Sun. 3/24/19 9:49am Listener Gregory:

The Coryell has progressed from near-lameness to something real.
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 9:50am duke:

Larry Coryell!?

i listened to Spaces by Larry Coryell just the other day, and it sounded pretty good

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 9:54am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @doctorjazz!
  Sun. 3/24/19 10:02am Listener Gregory:

"Gone With the Wind" does seem to have a difficult melody and phrasing. I think singing it would be quite hard.
  Sun. 3/24/19 10:05am mic_break:

Coincidentally, I was just listening to Gary Burton's "Genuine Tong Funeral" (really another Carla Bley 'stealth' album) this week. Coryell on guitar, with a very different feel. Never heard him in such a Hendrix-y mode as the track you just played (opening song section sounded very Hendrix ballad to me, right down to the drum fills). Search up a 1970s live set from Scandinavian TV, if it's still on there. In the post-Mahavishnu fusion zone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:07am Jeff Golick:

@LG: Sinatra does a good version, c. late 1950s.

@mic_break: hiya! Thanks for the Coryell tip! (Did you happen to hear the Carla Bley interview that WFMU dj Scott McDowell did this past Wednesday?)
  Sun. 3/24/19 10:11am mic_break:

Yes! As should everyone. Informative and touching. Another late teens/late 70s music hero, for me. I need to get back to read Ethan Iverson's inside-fan postings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:12am Jeff Golick:

Here's that Bley interview that was on The Long Rally: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:33am doctorjazz:

Great set you've got going here (I have that Iyet/Taborn album but haven't gotten to it. Have to move it up in the rotation). And I'm a sucker for a tuba.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:35am doctorjazz:

Tuba/violin, no less)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:37am doctorjazz:

And a bass as well, this is great! {bit of an old Threadgill feel)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:38am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I can see the Threadgill thing.
  Sun. 3/24/19 10:38am Listener Gregory:

@doctor And I can *hear* it!

I'll get to DMG one of these days ...
  Sun. 3/24/19 10:48am Listener Gregory:

Hmmm, what are the "monster" sounds in this TILT cut?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:51am Jeff Golick:

Probably some kind of amplified trumpet business, I would guess. (No monsters are credited on the CD.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:53am doctorjazz:

Some odd blowing into the mouthpieces, especially low pitched horns, I'd guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 10:54am doctorjazz:

Bit of processing, maybe..
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 10:59am Dave Sewelson:

Great show Jeff. I am trying to listeni while babysitting
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:03am Listener Gregory:

Uh-oh, I feel a whole GIF/JIF thing coming on with your pronunciation of "logy," Jeff.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

Destination: BAGEL
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:04am Listener Gregory:

Speaking of which, we had a discussion a few weeks back of whether to pronounce Ches Smith's name "chez" or "chess." Well, I went straight to the horse's mouth to find out the answer: Bruce at Downtown Music Gallery.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:05am Listener Gregory:

I asked Bruce how to pronounce it; he looked at me as if I was nuts; and said "chez"!! Then to prove it, he told me about every group that Smith was in before he moved to NY. I take this as definitive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:07am Jeff Golick:

Well, I dunno, @LG. I've met the guy -- he is yoga/dad buddies with my brother-in-law -- and by both of their accounts it is "chess." Might have to have him on the show to sort it out. Or better yet, Dave Sewelson gets him in studio in between babysitting gigs.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:07am Listener Gregory:

Also: logy | ˈlōɡē |
adjective North American
dull and heavy in motion or thought; sluggish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:08am Jeff Golick:

(Hey, @Dave and kiddo!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:08am Jeff Golick:

What did I say--low-ghee? Instead of "low-gee?"
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:10am Listener Gregory:

I will try to keep an open mind.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:10am Listener Gregory:

I thought you said low-jee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:12am Jeff Golick:

I blame the bagel.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:13am Listener Gregory:

Or bajel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:14am fred:

If Dave Sewelson ever runs out of ideas (not likely) settling pronunciation could be a lead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:14am Jeff Golick:

It would be a real public service!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:17am fred:

Seriously though, Dave's show is a wonderful addition to an already great GTDR lineup
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
I’d go with Bruce Gallanter in this one. Ches must be confusing himself with someone else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:17am Jeff Golick:

:::nods aggressively:::
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Does seem likely, @Doug.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:18am Listener Gregory:

It is amazing that a lot of jazz reference books don't give pronunciations even for very unusual names.
@Doug, if the question were about a recording, I would trust Bruce over the artist every time.
Sun. 3/24/19 11:19am chresti at work:

Hello! Listening! Working! Thanks!
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 11:19am hyde:

just catching up. guess The Long Rally with the Bley interview is my afternoon listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:20am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @chresti! Thanks to you for tuning in and saying hello!
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:20am Dean:

Is it GAL-lan-ter or gal-LAN-ter?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:20am fred:

Maybe he's keeping the pronunciation ambiguous to avoid his name being used in puns (looking Doug's way)
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:21am Listener Gregory:

This Fiedler has me imagining myself walking the streets of New Orleans. Nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:21am Jeff Golick:

@Dean! I think the former. But you'd have to ask Ches Smith to be sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:22am fred:

Fiedler > Felder
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 11:24am Sem:

Kitchen-bound for the morning, but listening at suitably high volume. Lovin' the spins as always, Jeff.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:24am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff ouch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:25am Jeff Golick:

Cheers, @Sem, and thanks! Happy eating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:27am Uncle Michael:

Time to head out. I've really been enjoying the show this morning, Jeff. Take care, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:27am doctorjazz:

Love Don Pullen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:27am Jeff Golick:

@fred: them's fightin' words for a certain segment of the FMU ecosystem.

@UM: bye-bye! Thanks very much!
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:27am Listener Gregory:

I've got the LP of this... didn't know it had been reissued. Anything with Don Pullen is well worth hearing, IMHO.
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 11:29am hyde:

this is really good
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:29am Jeff Golick:

The reissue was my only other DMG purchase from the other week's trip downtown.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:30am Listener Gregory:

Was this originally produced by Hal Wilner? I don't think Shemp Records had a very long run.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:31am Jeff Golick:

Yes, and yes.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:32am Dean:

Been short-order chef-ing for six 8YO girls this a.m.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Bruce Gallanter is exactly like Phil Schaap in every way. Except he is humble, warm, approachable, and completely different from Phil Schaap.
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 11:33am hyde:

godspeed, Dean
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:34am Dean:

Thanks, hyde. It's a very good thing that I like kids.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:34am Listener Gregory:

@Doug Very well put. Bruce is doing God's work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:37am Jeff Golick:

What's amazing, @Dean, is that you like other people's kids.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:37am Dean:

The last time I was in NYC I spent quality time at DMG at the feet of Bruce. Was too long ago.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:38am Dean:

This reminds me of Channel 3's "You Make Me Feel Cheap."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:38am Jeff Golick:

Schaap is ailing, I think? Anybody up on his well-being?
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:40am Dean:

I do, Jeff G., but what I don't like is other kids' parents.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:40am Listener Gregory:

He is only very seldom on the air now, and vague references are made to an illness, but no idea what.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

Now I feel like a dolt. Feel better soon, Phil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:42am Jeff Golick:

Bruce G. was talking about how their neighborhood has been changing...actual other businesses moving in, to what used to be a very quiet block. A temple above the store, and that's it. The graffiti I've seen lately -- "THE RICH KILLD NYC" -- seems to sum it up nicely.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:45am Dean:

I was last at DMG when they were in Chinatown. Still there? Before that, I can't remember the store location, but I remember running into Matthew Shipp there, checking on how his product was moving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:46am Jeff Golick:

Chinatown, yes. Well below ground.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:46am Listener Gregory:

Schaap is posting on Facebook, so that's a positive sign.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:47am Listener Gregory:

@Dean Their previous store was on the Bowery, in NoHo; before that, 5th St in the East Village (when I found out about it).
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

Seeing Jeff Golick perform with the Hoof ‘n’ Mouth Sinfonia is on my bucket list, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:50am Jeff Golick:

It always goes so well in my head. Might be hard to top that.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:50am Dean:

Thanks, LG. I learned about them too late to make it to the 5th St. address. If they move again, I hope they head, oh, say, 3000 miles west.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:52am Dean:

I believe I have one record, John Cale's Sun Blindness Music, that I purchased at DMG during the first visit, still sealed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:54am Jeff Golick:

This would take cojones that I do not possess.
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:55am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, I'm waiting for a soulful ballad. I know you can do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:55am Jeff Golick:

I'm a shouter not a lover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:56am doctorjazz:

Schapp seems to have a serious illness, but no information is out there that I've seen .He mostly plays "Encore presentations"in his KCR slots, but does live broadcasts here and there .
Jeff, I used to play a bit of guitar and an old friend who loved music, for some reason couldn't string 2 notes together in tune. I one got him to shout Sweet Jane in front of a crowd, and he killed it! (it didn't matter that the notes were all over).
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:56am Dean:

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure there's also an unopened Braxton record. I know for sure that I have sealed acquisitions from a weekend trip to now defunct East Side Records in Los Feliz. I walked out of there with fifty CDs that day.
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 11:57am coelacanth∅:

did i hear correctly from the kitchen that these are songs you'd sing at hoof-in-mouth finally?
Avatar Sun. 3/24/19 11:58am hyde:

thanks JG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:58am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @coel. It's a dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:59am fred:

Thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 11:59am Jeff Golick:

Thanks to you, @hyde! See you next time, I hope!
  Sun. 3/24/19 11:59am Listener Gregory:

Warning: From shouting in the car, I can advise that singing "in your brand-new leopard-skin pillbox hat" without error takes practice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 12:00pm Jeff Golick:

Oh, I don't doubt it, @LG.

Thanks, @fred! Take care!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/24/19 12:01pm doctorjazz:
