Options March 8, 2019: WFMU Marathon Show #1 w/ Matt Warwick!!!

Listen to this show: | Add or read comments

2019 makes it 40 years since my family skidded onto the tarmac at JFK. 'Twas the culmination of a disorienting 15-month long emigration process from the U.S.S.R with stops in Austria and Italy along the way. Remembering this anniversary also made me think of 1979 in another way - as a year in which so many phenomenal debut albums came into existence (Unknown Pleasures! A Trip to Marineville! This Heat!). And this, freeformists, is how my 2019 WFMU premium was born!

With all material recorded especially for this compilation, Your Song, My Foot! Volume III: The 1979 Edition is brimming with cover versions and re-imaginings of tracks found on some of the killerest debut LP's of 1979! On cassette for extra wow and flutter, the premium comes with a download code for those in love with modern living!

The crackerjack artists doing the covering include:
Phew, Tomutonttu, Stuart Chalmers, The Righteous Yeah (Michael Morley of the Dead C), Ed Bear, Mike Cooper, German Army, Natalia Beylis, Strotter Inst., Storm Bugs, The Dead Mauriacs, Infinite Article (Robert Horton & Edward Guerriero), The Pheromoans, and Richard Thomas!

The humdinger of a cover drawing is by John Godbert, the very same artist who drew the cover of The Fall's 1979 seminal debut LP - Live at the Witch Trials! John says, "It’s based on a wooden statue of a female figure that was found in a loch in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th century. She was a goddess who protected the loch & turned out to be 5,000 yrs old. This is very “Witch Trials” related, & MES would have liked it."

More than much gratitude to John and all of the musicians for their wunderschnapps contributions!!!

1979 was a great year. I was 11 years old. I knew how to—and did—ride the NYC subways from the deep end of Brooklyn to Washington Heights on the D and A trains all by myself. And at age 10 I went to see “Animal House” and barely understood like 40% what was happening. Damn… I was exposed to a lot by age 11.

Also in 1979, the first Russian student in elementary school was introduced to the class. Boy was that awkward. I think I remember some kid asking him if he liked being in a free country. Oh boy! That would inly be surpassed a few years later when a kid who was a Vietnam refugee came to JHS. Oh boy I wince at how fetishized that kid was in class.

“Red Dawn” is hilarious. But also, to me, 1980 was a year of waiting for “The Empire Strikes Back” came out. You know how mind blowing it was to see that without spoilers or any hint at the ending in a theater with people? You kids.

In '79 I lived 100 yards from the NY/NJ border. I was 7. The drinking age in NY was 18, but 21 in Jersey. The wild shit I got to see in Greenwood Lake as the youngsters drove north to legally drink and then try to drive home when drinking and driving was not such a big deal.. So many accidents, fights, drunk madness that made no sense to me but seemed perfectly normal.
  Fri. 3/8/19 10:08pm Miss Gretchen:

Jake Gould: when Star Wars came out, I was in high school art history class and my classmate was a very popular cheerleader. She would confide in me. She told me "Oh man, I've seen 'Star Wars' six times on dates!' and I said "hon, I've seen David Bowie in 'The Man Who Fell to Earth,' and that is not sci-fi!" So, that's all I know.

Folsom, Mad Max 1 was originally released with the overdubbed voices, and it kind of ruins the movie. Check out the movie with he original voices/sounds and it's a whole different film... Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) was not over-dubbed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/8/19 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha!
  Fri. 3/8/19 10:34pm Miss Gretchen:

Matt, your comments on "buffoons" made me think of the movie I just watched where Frank Langella said "what a maroon" and I laughed so hard I think the neighbors got nervous. . .
  Fri. 3/8/19 10:36pm Miss Gretchen:

Yeah, someone in the high up office decided Americans would be confused by Australian accents, and decide to have the entire film/sound/voice/everything overdubbed.
  Fri. 3/8/19 10:38pm Miss Gretchen:

TDK60 -- yes I agree. Are you going to get that new Ruby Ray book? photos?

@Miss Gretchen what about 12 inch
Avatar Fri. 3/8/19 10:41pm brycepunk1:

Bartertown is in part 3, which kinda sucks after the first 30 minutes. The kids, the slapstick comedy... WTF?!

I don't remember much of 1979 but I'm pretty sure that's the year I was taken to a kids' play, and a guy dressed up as a pirate announced in a scary voice, "Where is IKE?!? I'm coming to get IKE!!! I'm going to take him away!!!" and I freaked out, and my mom was like, "You leave my son alone! You're a bad man!" I have no idea what that was all about.
