Baby. An all out thank you for pulling out all the stops to bring the Cactus Blossoms into our homes last week. A lot of pieces were moved, and necks were stuck out to pull that off. All of your listeners are better for it. Year in and year out, you make The Michael Shelley Show the star of the greatest radio station in the world. I can't convey how much I appreciate how much love and attention you bring to this "job" in which you are not paid. Kudos, Baby. And.. Good morning!

Joe - leaving the lights up is one thing. Having the balls to turn them on in March is another. They really do look nice in a decent storm, but people have different reactions to seeing them so close to Spring. Some people are more forward-looking at that point than nostalgic.

  Sat. 3/2/19 11:56am Dean:

Looks like that April 1, '77, show was the band's first show in CA. Then the Whisky June 3-5, followed in August by several shows in larger venues (as opening act?), e.g., the Forum. Which confounds me, because I'm pretty sure a buddy of mine caught them first at the Starwood. Later, we both heard them at the Whisky. Obviously, my memory is shot.

A caveat to the "don't miss" Ween as a live act. A fair amount of homework is required to truly enjoy them live. Walking in off the street, could be a tad confusing for some. But maybe the best live band on the planet still playing. Marty Stuart would be a do not miss as well.

re setlist - depends on the band and the tour. mixing it up night to night isn't for everyone. and also, if it is a well thought out and out together show, there might not be a need to change it.

I saw Beck in a small venue recently. He was lamenting to us that at large venue shows, he is bound to the same setlist by the audio/visual supplementation bands insist on providing these days.
Avatar 🎃 Sat. 3/2/19 12:18pm Sid:

FMU makes it very easy to renew. Plus I get nervous when my heart and little radio vanish here in the chatbox. Verrry clever on FMU's part.
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:19pm clarke:

agreed Frank!! also, needless for me to ask - Warp & Woof is pre-ordered?? not me.
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:19pm Frank In Queens:

True Joe, it depends on the context. But presentation and concept aside, mix it up if you've got the repertoire. I know I get bored quickly when I have to play the same songs in the same order after awhile.
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:20pm Joe B:

Saw Beck last summer at the Garden. won't be disappointed if it is the exact same show this summer. it was that good. that said, he did swap out 3 to 5 songs most nights so not sure what he was on about
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/2/19 12:20pm myron feld:

I just read "Respect Yourself" and I believe the number of simultaneous LP releases was 32!
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:21pm Frank In Queens:

Clarke, you know it is! I haven't even gotten my last pre-order yet and they put another one up. They haven't even gotten to the Kid Marine reissue yet either, and I STILL haven't listened to Zeppelin Over China either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/2/19 12:22pm Listener Baby:

@Joe B. He probably has a few songs that he can swap in, and not much would change in the course of the show. He was so happy he play whatever he wanted. Requests, the whole deal. Freedom.
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:22pm clarke:

i hear ya - over-saturated!!!
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:22pm Joe B:

@Frank -- I hear ya. McCartney usually doesn't change but he also never mails in a single performance. whereas Tom Petty the past 15 years he toured seemed to be on autopilot. same show every other summer, swap out 2 new songs ... whereas changing nightly seems to fit some bands, or they are better at tit. See: Yo La Tengo
Avatar 🎃 Sat. 3/2/19 12:23pm Sid:

Michael, you almost gave me a heart attack. I thought you were going to say the tour was cancelled!
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:23pm Frank In Queens:

I mean, I get keeping the bulk of the setlist the same, especially if you're promoting new material. But after awhile, there's room to move some songs in and out to keep it fresh for the crowd; especially those bands who have devout followings.
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:23pm Joe B:

Yup, seen Beck do an all request solo acoustic show, he's equally adept at the big productions
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:24pm Frank In Queens:

YLT is an excellent example Joe.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/2/19 12:25pm Listener Baby:

Way back when, it sure seemed like NRBQ had East Coast/West Coast set lists. I saw them many times, and never heard songs played that they'd do regularly on the East Coast. Maybe my imagination??
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:26pm Joe B:

Escovedo is another great example. 2016 -- saw him do a super-structured, entire new album tour two nights in a row, then a month later a totally spontaneous, amazingly loose gig at Berllin.

Thanks for scaring me with the Nick Lowe health problem issues (lol). Glad to hear it just because of 'Love Starvation'.
Avatar 🎃 Sat. 3/2/19 12:26pm Sid:

Doesn't The Bowery have seats upstairs? If I had the choice, I'd do Tarrytown too. Suburban audiences do seem more respectful during the performance (there's fightin' words!).
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:27pm Frank In Queens:

I tried to keep things as fresh as possible, clarke. We had a fair amount of songs after awhile. Unfortunately, some songs were shelved for good for various reasons.
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:28pm Nutley Sam:

Bee Gees cover!
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:28pm clarke:

i would say NRBQ varies their sets much like Cheap Trick, but consciously trying to not repeat a whole lot. most bands are "tied" to doing certain songs. JB used Petty for example - i couldn't stand to do Free Falling every friggin' night, but he HAD to!!
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:29pm Joe B:

guess it was a good problem to have with tunes like he had.
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:29pm clarke:

still there was a time when NRBQ was 'tied' to doing a lot of AL songs no matter what!!
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:31pm clarke:

(and al did NOT want to do them!!!!)
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:33pm clarke:

i guess what we are all getting at is: what is the use of having a HUGE repertoire if you "HAVE" to play half the set the same every night?? the dichotomy of R'n'R
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:35pm clarke:

don't get me started on The Smiths!!
Avatar Sat. 3/2/19 12:35pm Frank In Queens:

That's still half a set to be able to change up. If you''re playing 2 hours a night, that's still a lot of variation.

I always thought the Monocrome Set connection to Adam & the Ants was it mildly interesting. Had no idea they are still active prior to the listing for the Monty Hall show.

I can't not like Mrs. Maisel if only because Rachel Brosnahan is the spitting image of my college girlfriend (who is still a good friend of mine) who also kinda dressed like that in the 90s.
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:48pm McGreivey:

I watched the first episode of Mrs Maisel, and I was bored. But people raved about it, do I watched the second, and it started getting better. etcetera. It did take a while to get going. Now I'm waiting for the next batch of episodes to appear.

Michael, love your show! It is the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Stick with it. It has some great moments.

Supposedly Mrs. Maisel is based on Joan Rivers. Tony Shaloub is great!
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:53pm paul:

I've never seen the MMM, but when Rachel Brosnahan hosted SNL she was great.
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:53pm clarke:

Maisel is so well-intentioned - but, some non-great moments, too. great sets, acting, culture. i think i would rather just see a strict bio of elaine may
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/2/19 12:54pm Moammar:

I'm a ``Maisel'' opponent. It just wants to be liked too much. Repackaging the old, weird, hip America for an anodyne new age.
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:54pm DG:

Wow, lots to comment on here. 1. Only opening act I remember for Cheap Trick was (solo) Todd Rundgren---he did a short set before this special show at Roseland, to mark the 20th Anniversary of Budokan; also played w/them for 1-2 numbers. I remember him being kind of annoyed by the sound system---think he just played piano and guitar. 2. I've heard that bands have to stick to the same setlist at large venues because of sound & lights considerations, granted---so how does Springsteen change the set every night? 3. Only saw the most recent version of "Fargo" which I liked (mostly---it got needlessly grotesque at times), so are the other 2 better?
  Sat. 3/2/19 12:54pm Bonnie Brown:

Fargo is great!!!! Westworld great too.

I really wanted to like "Westworld," and I did at first (have seen both seasons), but it seems obsessed with violence...and seems designed to confuse the audience. Jeffrey Wright is amazing though.
