Via my parents, I have the DW album on which PP appears. Splendid.

a vid of Love doin' "Red Book" on a local LA TV rock show then, shows Arthur Lee with attitude, even tho lip-syncing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 10:18pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I just discovered that the Manfred Mann version also hit the Top40 a year before Love!
  Wed. 2/27/19 10:18pm Dean:

It's more than charm, Jeff Ash. Old records often sound REALLY good.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 10:20pm TDK60:

Manfred Mann's version was cool too. // Some of those tunes Dionne W. did, wow.

Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 10:24pm TDK60:

yeah, that Cher cut is good, only knew the Dionne version.
  Wed. 2/27/19 10:25pm Dean:

I do hope that "Mexican Divorce" makes the cut. It is my favorite pop song bar none. Not Ry Cooder's take. Has to be BB's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

The Drifters will appear later in the show doing that very tune!
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 10:26pm Erica:

Will we hear Herb Alpert's version of this song Larry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 10:28pm Funky16Corners:

Not this time. There will be another version of the tune later on, though.
  Wed. 2/27/19 10:28pm Dean:

(Uncle Michael played BB's performance on one of his listener request shows. Truly, it is perfect.)

Uncle Michael? Who is that Dean?

The Isaac Hayes? I've played it before. Huge fave of mine too

I thought you were joking, Erica. Apologies for being snarky.

Do I remember who requested it? Uh, yeah. Me.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

haha Larry i knew you'd know! (even if i was mistaken about playing it on a 2 our show)
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 10:34pm Franco Twinkie:

I read Burt's book, and really enjoyed him recounting his early years. Not so much the star studded later years with fabulous sweaters. Most musicians are a stone bore after everything has gone their way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

Listen closely, there are going to be three very different versions of this song in this set
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 10:35pm TDK60:

  Wed. 2/27/19 10:51pm rw:

Is there a formula for writing songs like this? It's kind of insane. I've never written a song so I don't really know how it works.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

BTW, this is THAT Tony Orlando
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 10:54pm coelacanth∅:

everyone has their own method, but i'll guess that Bacharach gets a melody in his head, thinks of a lyric spontaneously in the course of the day while that melody is in there, then sits down and expands the idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 10:54pm Funky16Corners:

But he never wrote the lyrics!

Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:06pm Erica:

I know Tony Orlando from his stuff with Dawn ("Tie A Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree")
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:07pm Dean:

I don't hear classical in Bacharach at all. Be Bop, yes. And, otherwise, pure pop.

I don't like Cooder's MD. For me, it's a let-down from BB's, which is, as I mentioned upthread, perfect.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:08pm Franco Twinkie:

This is fantastic!
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:08pm Erica:

Bacharach's music is straight-up lounge music.

The Losers Lounge, NYC's celebrated gaggle of local artists, feted their own 10th Anniversary with an all-Bacharach show years ago. In fact, 15 years ago, as they are about to celebrate their silver. Larry, what will you do when you reach 250 shows?
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry, I can't really describe it, except to say that no one else sounded like them, and they rocked without rocking.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:13pm Erica:

You gotta admit though, Tony Orlando & Dawn's cover of He Don't Love You is much more soulful and melodic than the original version. Just my opinion by the way.
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:13pm Dean:

I like how you slipped Gershwin in there, F16C. Me? I hear Raspberries. Shostakovich?! Huh?! Not by a million miles. Now, BB is a fan of sour harmonies a la Prokofiev, but he wrote *songs*, two, three minute exercises in rhythm and cadence. He also wrote those instrumental tunes that ended up featured as intros or outros on TV. Even those exhibit no ambitions beyond occupying a few minutes. I love Bacharach, but classical he ain't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:13pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:15pm Parq:

The amazing thing is how America bought into that whole Yellow Ribbon thing, especially during the Carter-era Iranian hostage crisis. People honestly believed that it was a historic American tradition, and not the creation of seventies MOR composers.

Casino Royale was a self-indulgent drug riddled mess, but the music is fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:19pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, it's a really weird, messy movie
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:20pm coelacanth∅:

the whipped cream album has 2 different tunes used on the dating game, in different capacities, and one used on the newlywed game, i think, and i think other tv shows also.
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:20pm Dean:

The LP Casino Royale has for years been a desideratum of so-called audiophiles. Evidently it was recorded very well. I've never heard it until now, and I'm listening on a chromebook, so sound is shitty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:21pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - It got a nice reissue by Varese Sarabande a while back
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:21pm coelacanth∅:

(room 222?)
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:21pm Parq:

My favorite gag in Casino Royale is when the Woody Allen character escapes a firing squad. only to jump over the wall, straight into the path of another firing squad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:22pm doctorjazz:

And I like this Herb Alpert, it was a single with airplay, if I remember correctly.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:22pm Franco Twinkie:

So I imagine Enoch Light telling his band: Okay, we'll do a counter melody with a coffee percolator, I'm flat out of ideas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:23pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq - Casino Royale manages to be both a weird James Bond movie and a weird Woody Allen movie
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:23pm Dean:

Which San Jose is this song about?
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:24pm Franco Twinkie:

To this day I can't imagine why anyone would want to go to San Jose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Of all the Easy "auteurs" Enoch Light was the most imaginative and audiophilic
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - California
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:24pm rw:

Chick-a-boom.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:24pm coelacanth∅:

haha! ..."Alpert goes musique concrète"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:25pm Funky16Corners:

Anyone else remember this as the ABC Movie of the Week Theme?
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:26pm Dean:

Which one?! The one near me in Silicon Valley has a couple attractions. First, an amazing stereo store devoted to vinyl. Second, a really nice old Italian deli.

There you are...a Bacharach tune devised for TV promotions. ("Mexican Divorce" is on this album!)
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Tony Mottola's best song - Guitar USA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

He wrote this song for his daughter
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:27pm rw:

F1600, any chance we'll be hearing Bacharach's version of Mexican Divorce?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

Not his own. The Drifters version is coming up
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:27pm Dean:

Thank you, rw. I"ve been begging for it.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:28pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, Street Light Records is good.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:29pm Parq:

Angie Dickenson. There, I said it.
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:30pm rw:

I kind of need to hear it. I know and love the Ry C. version. Maybe a little independent research after the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:33pm doctorjazz:

I love the Drifters version Of Mexican Divorce as well
Just a great tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:34pm doctorjazz:

Ahhh.. Shala LA LA laaa lal
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:34pm coelacanth∅:

i was out of the room. i'm sure i would know the music from abc's movie of the week, which one of my sisters always watched.
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:34pm Dean:

I think what I love about Burt's version of MD is the sense that it is about *divorce*, nothing more or less. Cover versions are too lyrical, too song-like. Burt's version manages to deliver song and discourse in exquisite measure. "One day married, the next day free..." Love and anti-love described, almost explained.
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:35pm chresti:

Nice version of baby it’s you
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:35pm Funky16Corners:

The original
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:35pm Franco Twinkie:

He really captured the feeling of PCH between county line and Pt. Mugu.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:36pm coelacanth∅:

though i love the shirelles, it's not my favorite version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:36pm doctorjazz:

This w the hit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:36pm doctorjazz:

Sha Lala LaaaLa
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:36pm Erica:

That keyboard though, very loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:37pm doctorjazz:

(great little organ break)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:37pm Funky16Corners:

@C - What's your fave?
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:37pm Erica:

I was gonna say organ but I wasn't sure.
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:38pm chresti:

This is crazy
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Arthur Lee and Johnny Echols saw What's Up Pussy Cat and were blown away by Paul Jones.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

Larry, i was hoping that would float by and no one would ask!
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:40pm Dean:

Johnny Mathis in the offing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:40pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Paul Jones is one of my all time favorite singers
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:40pm Franco Twinkie:

...then Arthur wrote A House Is Not A Motel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:40pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I really want to know. There are so many cool versions
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:40pm Parq:

A House Is Not got repurposed for an 80s Broadway revival of Promises. Fran sings it when the boss leaves her in the apartment on Christmas. It really doesn't fit the situation, but what the hell.
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:41pm Dean:

Same Paul Jones who did the Sex Pistols cover?
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

i hate to say it but i like both the beatles' version and smith's version better.
- i'm hiding behind this igloo for a while.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:43pm Jeff Ash:

Worth the wait for this one!
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:43pm coelacanth∅:

i don't think i've heard that many versions. maybe 2-3 others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:43pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I love both of those. There's also a great version by Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:43pm doctorjazz:

Like the Beatles version, but I like The Shirelles' better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq - I never heard that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:44pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yeah, isn't this a great arrangement?
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:44pm chresti:

Such overwrought vocal
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - which one?
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:45pm Jeff Ash:

Always Something There is such a great song. Hard to go wrong with it.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:45pm coelacanth∅:

well, i did hear the beatles version for years before i ever heard the original. (and smith's too, though not as many times)
-and i will seek out that Lowe/Costello version.
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:45pm chresti:

Patti I think

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:49pm Funky16Corners:

But those harmonies!
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:49pm Parq:

Damn, this show, though. The Kings, even. God, I don't even think I can handle all these memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:51pm doctorjazz:

Did they actually just die at that lyric?
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:51pm chresti:

Enjoy the harmonies and swirly strings
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

That Four King Cousins album is sought after for a reason. It's super-easy/slick but the harmonies and the arrangements are outstanding
Avatar Wed. 2/27/19 11:52pm Erica:

The Nostalgia is just pouring in ain't it Parq?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/19 11:53pm doctorjazz:

I just remembered The King Family wow!
  Wed. 2/27/19 11:54pm Dean:

Only song in the world that refers to a "travel folder."

A favorite TV commercial from my youth: Ricardo Montoban shilling for Swanson's Mexican TV dinners with...."Charry" Desset!
Avatar Thu. 2/28/19 12:01am coelacanth∅:

rw i'm glad it (or anything) worked! and i'd bet good food could help save a lot of marriages. (directly or indirectly)
