Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:28pm Kris Holmes:

Yeah, The Crunch! Great record. Yes, Jeff has now opened a record store in NoCal & essentially closed the "blog" part of the site down, it had kind of died anyway, not many people were contributing anymore. The message board is still going but many of us original members have pretty much moved on. I actually saw the songwriter of The Crunch perform the song live about 10 years ago with his band, he didn't even remember writing it!! He passed away a couple of year back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 10:28pm Funky16Corners:

Hi C!
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:30pm Erica:

Yeah Kris I never got to contribute because I couldn't find any strange, obscure records, only what was well-known in my area. Despite me not being a fan of vinyl records, I did enjoy hearing the music itself as it was worth discovering music I didn't know existed in the past.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

I miss Waxidermy
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:31pm Kris Holmes:

there is still a lot of obscure stuff out there, I still probably see at least a record a week that i've never seen before!
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Speaking of the Charlatans, one day I was walking thru the Haight taking pictures of Christmas trees laying in the gutter, and I found myself on Downey Street, and it wasn't to hard to find the front porch they are all standing on in their most iconic photo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 10:33pm Funky16Corners:

Another really interesting band that is all but forgotten, but super important to the SanFran scene
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:39pm Franco Twinkie:

The Charlatans did Alabama Bound early on, and later turnded it into a commercial for Groom'n Clean, a hair gel in a tube that you could use instead of washing your hair. I'll bet it was real popular with all the filthy hippies that lived in the bushes in Golden Gate Park.
  Wed. 2/20/19 10:40pm rw:

Evening! There's a hair gel you can use instead of washing???
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 10:40pm Funky16Corners:

Hey rw! I'm betting it didn't catch on.
  Wed. 2/20/19 10:40pm rw:

Not that I've got much hair to wash, but still.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:41pm Franco Twinkie:

RW, It lasted for about a minute. There has a great commercial with a bunch of teenagers dancing on a boat.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Melinda - Me too. One of my all time faves
  Wed. 2/20/19 10:44pm rw:

I'm with melinda and Funky on this one.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:44pm Erica:

Is it me or do I prefer the single version over the album version of "I Fought the Law?" The album version had too much instrumentation to it and rerecorded vocals. "Let Her Dance", however is pretty good.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Just to be a trouble maker, a friend of mine went up to Van Dyke Parks in a restaurant in Pasadena and kissed him while he was eating dinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 2/20/19 10:45pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

i remember ads for that gel. i wanted to try it so i wouldn't have to bother washing my hair but my mother said no.
...anyway it's not any worse than leave-in conditioner, which obviously will make your hair get dirty very quickly.

@Franco - I might kiss VDP but only because I love his music

Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 10:51pm Erica:

Never heard this version of "She" before. I only know the Monkees version. Did this come out the same time "Runaway 67" came out? (Yes he re-recorded his hit Runaway in 1967, which I discovered on an Australian music blog last year.)

Whittier Blvd is huge, and therefore interesting. I lived on the east side, suburbia, and even it was interesting. Head toward East LA and it gets interestinger.

The first record I bought with my lunch money was a 45 of Think by Aretha Franklin. I was 11. The shop was on the way home from school, in Santa Maria, Ca

@coel: I can only afford piss beer, my good free keg of a microbrew at my footy pub, is tapped (it was open to the public to buy as well). It lasted me about a month, at 6 pints a week.

i never heard of love 'till the early 70s when my older sister brought home "four sale". it was still years off to really get into them, when i heard forever changes.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 11:52pm Erica:

footy pub ngh, are you an Aussie? Kiwi? Just asking.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 11:52pm northguineahills:

(still have decentish whisky).
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 11:53pm Erica:

Also, sorry about your computer crashing ngh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 11:53pm coelacanth∅:

yeah whiskey's more economical, unless you drink too much of it. then it may cost you dearly.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 11:54pm Franco Twinkie:

I got Forever Changes for Christmas a month after it was released, along with their Satanic Majesties Request.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

Or you could just get high with Phil and Don and their friend Mary Jane

@Erica: nah, just a wee Yank (born in Appalachia) transplanted to the South. (Until my knees gave out due to surgery, I played until my early 30s [Association Football, I'm a football nerd].

ngh! Good luck with the job app. I'm doing coffee here. Not sure if it's helping but it's cheaper than beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 11:55pm coelacanth∅:

i don't remember whether i bought my first new 45 first or joined the record club of america first, in which case i had 3 first new records -all albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 2/20/19 11:55pm chresti:

I would think you would make your own brew, ngh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/20/19 11:56pm coelacanth∅:

ghost pepper ale
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 11:57pm Erica:

Oh okay ngh. 'Cause I know in Australia, they call Australian football (AFL) footy.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 11:58pm Erica:

Also, the Everly Brothers didn't even sound like Phil and Don in "Mary Jane" but rather a typical 60s band of that time.
  Wed. 2/20/19 11:58pm rw:

I think I first heard and bought Forever Changes in the late '70s. Satanic Majesties Request my daughter found for me in a thrift shop two months ago.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/19 11:58pm northguineahills:

@chresti: I haven't ventured into that yet, but I'm interested. I may love good beer, like good food, but I'm not a beer snob, beer is beer.

coel is full of good ideas. I did once make scotch bonnet flavored vodka, and that REALLY BURNED!

I'm still working on the quarter oz I got two years ago...

@Erica: I watch Ozzie Rules on the weekend mornings....
