Threadgill tribute. nice!
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 9:12am TDK60:

WKCR has great music. Yesterday I listened to their reggae, then soul, then blues hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:12am doctorjazz:

Looking forward to the Threadgill tribute.

Pretty vocal, reminds me a bit of Petra Haden...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:16am doctorjazz:

Of course , it predates her quite a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:17am Jeff Golick:

Norma Winstone is one of the vocalists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:20am doctorjazz:

WKCR is where I cut my teeth radio-wise, but I'm at FMU mostly these days (find the student DJ's difficult to listen to sometimes, and then there's Schapp...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:20am Stanley:

I've managed to escape the in-laws, while they're at the cinema.
Thank god, your show is just what I need, Jeff.
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 9:23am TDK60:

I have one E. Weber album: Yellow Fields. Wonderfully melancholic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:23am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Stanley. Will try not to invoke the in-laws.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:24am Jeff Golick:

Proper hellos to:

@TDK60
@hyde
@Listener Gregory
@doctorjazz
!!
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 9:27am TDK60:

Jazzy Doc: yeah, of course Woofmoo Univ. is the best. And KCR is also an oasis, compared to most other radio.
  Sun. 2/17/19 9:29am Listener Gregory:

I feel bad that I never gave a proper hello, Jeff. If my mother were alive, she'd be horrified.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:30am Jeff Golick:

I like improper hellos, too.
  Sun. 2/17/19 9:30am Listener Gregory:

I think "Orly-Ivato" is "Tatas-Matoes" translated into Serbian. I could be wrong though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:31am doctorjazz:

Agreed TDK60! In the NY area ,there's not much else I can listen to WBGO on the background, NYC for news, sports radio, and that's it.
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 9:33am TDK60:

Doc: sometimes WNYU FM has adventurous shows, an Arabic music one, etc. NYC radio is not bad compared to...some other places..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:34am doctorjazz:

No, for what it does, WNYC is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:35am Jeff Golick:

What were y'all saying about good radio...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:36am doctorjazz:

Once upon a time WNYC actually had a good amount of interesting music programming, but now all that's left of that is New Sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:38am doctorjazz:

Haven't checked out WNYU, though , college?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:38am Jeff Golick:

(I think @TDK60 is noting NYU's station, not WNYC.)
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 9:39am TDK60:

..was talking @ WNYU, am not familiar with WNYC. I do listen to WBGO once in a while. But it's about 85-90% FMU for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:42am Jeff Golick:

When I commute to Long Island, from Brooklyn, by car, I listen to the WFMU fm signal for as long as possible, lose it in outer Queens, then shift over to KCR or NYC, which have stronger signals. When I think of it, I start listening to FMU via app, but my cassette radio aux converter is not working, so it's just the phone speaker.
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 9:43am TDK60:

NYU a college station sharing the 89.1 FM signal with WFDU. Oh! and, being a lefty, I do listen to WBAI some too; but back to Drummer Radio here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:44am Scraps:

——— asleep, aaaaaaeeee, yup yup yup yup. Yawn.

In my sleep state, I heard Threadgill. My nose directed me here.

(Threadgill! Threadgill! Threadgill!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:44am doctorjazz:

Ahh, I see, it used to be a radio station that only broadcast near NYU, they boosted the signal some 10+ years ago. Brooklyn College had a radio station like that when I was there.. You could hear it in a radius of a few blocks near the college .
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:45am doctorjazz:

And now, they can all be on line .
  Sun. 2/17/19 9:47am Listener Gregory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:52am listener james from westwood:

Yay, Scraps!
I heard "Eberhard Weber" and thought it might have been a reference to Eberhard-Faber pencils. I brake for writing utensils.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 9:58am Jeff Golick:

What's your pencil of choice, @ljfw?
  Sun. 2/17/19 10:00am Listener Gregory:

The pencil perfume is sold out at cwpencils, Jeff. Why did you raise my hopes, only to dash them?

Hello, @Dean, good morning. Love a good pen store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:09am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:13am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:13am Scraps:

Pens, pencils, straight-edges, compasses, graph paper with r-e-a-l-l-y tiny cells, erasers, t-squares... I've taken a couple drafting classes in my time, and I originally prepared to go to architecture school, until I realized I have no talent for visualization. Realized I really wanted to be an architectural historian, which I'm not.

Were these records big in the 80s when they came out, I wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:24am Scraps:

The first side of Easily Slip is ecstatic, first to last. Wrapped yourself in New Orleans.

Pens, pencils, straight-edges, compasses, graph paper with r-e-a-l-l-y tiny cells, erasers, t-squares... I've taken a couple potty classes in my time, and I originally prepared to go to the bathroom, until I realized I have no talent for finding it. Realized I really wanted to be a scat historian, which I am.
  Sun. 2/17/19 10:25am Listener Gregory:

I bought them back in the 80s, Jeff, which is not an answer. But he did have a record contract and was able to regularly put out albums. They certainly were well received, so I think he did ok. Not Kenny G level of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:26am Scraps:

Jeff G, well, RCA let them go out of print quickly. Stupid RCA
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 10:26am hyde:

i bought "Easily Slip" when it came out. I remember it having some cachet, but not necessarily "big"
  Sun. 2/17/19 10:27am sit n squeeze:

talking of easily slip...well, i'll leave that to your imagination
  Sun. 2/17/19 10:30am Listener Gregory:

The men's pencil sweater is also sold out. This is heartbreaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:31am Scraps:

And my very favorite, You Know the Number. Ten favorite alltime for anything
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:31am doctorjazz:

I had all of them .. They were critically well received , and the Sextette could fill a decent sized club (saw them a number of times, think once in Sounds of Brazil...)
  Sun. 2/17/19 10:31am Dean:

Review of When Was That, Musician magazine (Oct. 1, 1982): "It's easily one of the strongest entries of the year, and the other day its distributor told me he expects it to do real well and sell about 3,000 copies..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:34am Jeff Golick:

Do real well! Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:35am Scraps:

That was before RCA, the first real non-Air album... he was still slotted an avant-garde
  Sun. 2/17/19 10:36am Listener Gregory:

A lot of independent labels are printing only 500 CDs now, I believe. If it does do "real well," they run out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:38am Scraps:

Still gorgeous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:39am doctorjazz:

Doing well is relative, of course...
Another great band (getting kind of redundant here).
I go back far enough to have seen Air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:40am doctorjazz:

Still have all the vinyl releases of these records
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 10:45am hyde:

@doc man, i was a huge Air fan but never saw them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:52am Stanley:

Henry 'Pigbag' Threadgill? Digging!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:52am Scraps:

He said (alternately) the Sextette was two drummers but only one drum part? Sort of, like you said. Anyway, he also said the band was the sextet: him, and the band (Threadgill, and the sextet)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:54am Jeff Golick:

@Scraps: ah, Threadgill and the band = the extra T! That makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:54am doctorjazz:

Downtown Manhattan, caught lots of these guys, Lester Bowie, Arthur Blythe (the In The Tradition band was a great show, as was the tuba band) a bunch of others .. Was an exciting time.
  Sun. 2/17/19 10:55am Listener Gregory:

I'm guessing there's no personnel listing on this?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:56am doctorjazz:

I remember reading that explanation as well, of the 2 drummers being counted as 1. They never played the same patterns though
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:56am Jeff Golick:

It's wonderful to listen to Threadgill and friends here in sunny and quite warm Mexico City. Good morning, Jeff!
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 10:57am hyde:

@doc those guys almost never made it to Boston, sadly. i did see a few in Amherst, since they had a forward thinking music program (with teachers like Max Roach, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 10:58am Jeff Golick:

Morning, @alanr!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/17/19 11:00am Jeff Golick:

@LG: this discographical page for Threadgill [discography.backstrom.se... notes the following for these recordings (which are also up at youtube):

On four clips from Hamburg, we see Henry conducting. The first clip finds Bob Stewart on tuba and Booker T. soloing on tenor sax. The right clip finds Ted Daniel soloing on trumpet and John Stubblefield on soprano sax. The third clip is dominated by Craig Harris' trombone, followed by Sherri Scott's and Drew Richards' singing. This duo continues on the fourth clip, followed by Jerome Harris on bass guitar and John Stubblefield's return, this time on tenor sax. Drummer (to the right) is Reggie Nicholson and I think the percussionist is Roberto Maldonado.

Hey, i just finished reading Black is the Body by Emily Bernard. She thanks Ethan Iverson for "creative and intellectual support" in the acknowledgements which I just read during this show. A quick search of both their names led to a page on the same wordpress blog that contains the Threadgill interview you linked to. Cool confluence. The book is beautiful by the way.
Avatar Sun. 2/17/19 11:18am coelacanth∅:

haha now you get 3 for the price of 1! it's okay, likely anyone clicking one star would like all 3 tracks anyway.

A couple of good science fiction people died in the upper half of the nineties in the last week, too: Carol Emshwiller, a avantgarde writer, and publisher Betty Balllentine (Ballentine, Bantam), both of them I knew.

But at least, if you’re going to die, 97 or 98 is good to reach!

My pops was two months shy of 98 when he died. His 100th is coming up this September. We had this running joke long into his dementia. When I would greet him he’d say, “I’m getting old.” And I’d say, “how old are you?,” and he’d say, “I’m shooting for 100,” and I’d say, “you have pretty good aim,” and we’d both laugh.
