Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Should there be an unofficial grading system for the My Hometown entries? Uncle Michael, do you remember the best? Worst? Weirdest reaches? Also wondering if the inventory of ostensibly boastworthy features was developed collaboratively between song producer and local chamber people and civic boosters.
Or should we, after all, not palpate these gems but just revel in 'em?

glenn, Joseph Lopez and Bob Dunn recorded with electric steel years before Barnes recorded with electric guitar.
Avatar Fri. 2/15/19 2:17pm glenn:

i personally wasn't there, but wikipedia says - "Barnes was born in South Chicago Heights, Illinois in 1921. His father was a guitarist and taught Barnes acoustic guitar at the age of nine. A year later, in 1931, Barnes's brother made a pickup and amplifier for him. Barnes said that he was the first person to play electric guitar. From 1935–1937, he had his own band that performed in the Midwest.[1]

On March 1, 1938, he recorded the songs "Sweetheart Land" and "It's a Lowdown Dirty Shame" with blues guitarist Big Bill Broonzy, and in doing so he became the first person to make a record on electric guitar, fifteen days before Eddie Durham recorded on electric guitar with the Kansas City Five. In 1938, when he was seventeen, he was hired as staff guitarist for the NBC Orchestra."

You're missing the distinction between a steel and a guitar.

Imagine the first person to play the tuba, no idea how it developed but it must have scared the horses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/15/19 2:21pm joe:

I didn't get to read all the way through this but it looked interesting Pedal To The Metal A short History of the Steel. If gives the year of 1932 as the first produced Steel (I'm assuming they mean commercially) www.premierguitar.com...

i'll have to listen to the show once more, been way too busy to concentrate..most of it was great.. except that noise about an hour ago.. thanks UM, have to get back to work,,
Avatar Fri. 2/15/19 2:24pm glenn:

no, i caught that. but they still need an amp. but i guess my point is moot anyway -

\n 1928, the Stromberg-Voisinet firm was the first company to sell an electric stringed instrument and amplifier package. However, musicians found that the amps had an "unsatisfactory tone and volume, [and] dependability problems", so the product did not sell well. Even though the Stromberg-Voisinet amp did not sell well, it still launched a new idea: a portable electric instrument amp with a speaker, all in an easily transported wooden cabinet. In 1929, Vega electrics launched a portable banjo amplifier. In 1932, Electro String Instruments and amplifier (this is not the same company as Stromberg Electro Instruments) introduced a guitar amp with "high output" and a "string driven magnetic pickup". Electro set out the standard template for combo amps: a wooden cabinet with the electronic amplifier mounted inside, and a convenient carrying handle to facilitate transporting the cabinet. In 1933, Vivi-Tone amp set-ups were used for live performances and radio shows. In 1934, Rickenbacker launched a similar combo amp that added metal corner protectors to keep the corners in good condition during transportation.[1]

In 1933, Dobro released an electric guitar and amp package. The combo amp had "two 8″ Lansing speakers and a five-tube chassis. Dobro made a two speaker combo amp that was on the market over 12 years before Fender launched its two-speaker "Dual Professional/Super" combo amp. In 1933, Audio-Vox was founded by Paul Tutmarc, the inventor of the first electric bass (Tutmarc's instrument did not achieve market success until Leo Fender's launched the Precision Bass). In 1933, Vega sold a pickup and amplifier set for musicians to use with existing guitars.
