Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Good people! Come on in. Just making sure that all of the knife blades face towards the plates, and counting butter plates, and crisping napkins, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 8:46pm chresti:

Here! Free at last from civic duty, hi Danny, I wouldn't mind a napkin crisp now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 8:55pm Little Danny:

OMG chresti, congrats. I figured it was long over for you.
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 9:03pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Danny! Gotta go in a while, but I'll check the playlist when I get home to see what I missed. Have fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 9:05pm Little Danny:

Franco, hi, see ya soon!
  Thu. 2/7/19 9:57pm Dean:

In the front room, a late evening raga featuring Hariprasad Chaurasia. Convince me I need to turn down the stereo and focus on CBF. (Hint: Won't take much.)
  Thu. 2/7/19 10:00pm Dean:

In fact, the Loevendie goes well with the Chaurasia. BOTH AND!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:00pm Little Danny:

Well, this'll snap you out of your raga reverie, Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:02pm chresti:

Hi Dean, have a napkin crisp

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:04pm Little Danny:

Welcome to the legal system of the United States, chresti. It has precisely zero to do with justice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:13pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:14pm chresti:

Danny prepared some crisp napkins earlier@Dean
  Thu. 2/7/19 10:15pm Dean:

Ah. Slow tonight. Very slow. I've been running Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. What have I done?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:16pm Little Danny:

Sorry, levels all over the place tonight. Records are funny
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:17pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:17pm Little Danny:

I'm sure you've done *something* Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:17pm doctorjazz:

Used to be talk over music of another departed Thursday Drummer DJ (though he did land on his feet on the main station ). Don't think I've ever heard it all the way through ,cool
Oh and hi!
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:18pm still b/p:

Was just treated to goat cheese toast, deviled egg and cornbread, with a fine Main Beer Company "Lunch" IPA. Now I'm gonna have peanut butter and Fluff on saltines right here while I enjoy the show... to remind me who I really am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:18pm Little Danny:

Heyyy Doc. Got some vibes lined up for some point, thought of you
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:19pm Little Danny:

Still b/p. Jesus that sounds delish. I'm hungry
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:19pm coelacanth∅:

chresti what's "crisp napkins"?
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:19pm coelacanth∅:

s b/p thanks for torturing me
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:20pm Little Danny:

It was a ridiculous comment I made at the top of the playlist, coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:20pm chresti:

Glad it's over, it wasn't always terribly sucky, we tried to make the most of it @melinda
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:20pm still b/p:

That's MAINE Beer Company. Gooood.
Which sounds delish, the restaurant line-up of apps, or the specialties of my own cabinet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:21pm chresti:

Fluff?

Thursday seems to be real estate with much turn over).
Some Good Vibes always welcome, LD!
  Thu. 2/7/19 10:23pm Dean:

I always wanted to run a bar called Brown Candle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:25pm Little Danny:

It should be, Hams, but no one in Brooklyn quite understands the imperative of crisping napkins. At least not yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:25pm fleep:

Fluff is rare out here, it's usually marshmallow creme
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:27pm coelacanth∅:

...and after 2 slices of adorned pizza all i wanted was a caesar salad and decided i was being piggy. now it's closer to bedtime and i'm considering chocolate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:28pm chresti:

The judge told us we could hang out in the hallway, afterwards, to discuss the case with the attorneys, they would really appreciate it. We all bolted out the door and ran

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:31pm chresti:

I like the ork visual, LD.
Never tried it @still b/p
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:31pm fleep:

16.75 for an ork sounds cheap, but then they sell you up on extra pieces and backup singers
  Thu. 2/7/19 10:32pm Dean:

When I was foreman on a jury in LA, I did talk to the prevailing attorney, a young guy, after the verdict. Might have been his first trial. I pointed out that the only reason he won was because his opponent, a jerk-off old guy who obviously didn't give two shits for his plaintiffs, was so incompetent. Borderline malpractice.
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

we ate pb&j sandwiches practically every day for years. despite seeing tv ads forever my mother never bought marshmallow fluff and when we asked about it she said it was terrible. she probably had never tasted it. then one of my sisters had it at a friend's house when we were maybe 10-12 and convinced my mother to buy it and we all loved it.
  Thu. 2/7/19 10:34pm Dean:

When we read the verdict, the judge stared at us and curled his eyebrows as if to say, "Are you people that stupid?" Thanks, your fucking honor, for your concern at this stage of the trial. What a consummate dick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:35pm Little Danny:

Same here, coel. PB&J all the way. Can't go there again.
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:35pm coelacanth∅:

i stopped eating it when i became a vegetarian, age 16. but now they make a fluff out of rice that tastes delicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:36pm chresti:

Well, if the want to talk to me, they can reach me at the tennis courts...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:39pm chresti:

We had PB&J made with plum preserves and Laura Scudders peanut butter
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:40pm fleep:

That was great. Cat separations, live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:41pm chresti:

It's not that we didn't want to talk, we just wanted to beat the traffic @Dean
  Thu. 2/7/19 10:41pm Dean:

Heh, I, too, am in the business of cat separation, having recently moved my mom's cat here from SoCal. (Moved my mom, too.) We already had one cat. I say let them duke it out, but the rest of my family doesn't want to have to clean up the mayhem.
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

i eat almond butter & jelly (or similar) on ricecakes fairly often, and i keep peanut butter in the house for cooking (and sometimes for apples...and sometimes for mouse bait)
if i run out of almond butter mid-ricecake i'll mix some pb in; but it's not as good.
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

with dogs you only let them duke it out *to a point* -unless you like giving your money to the veterinarian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:47pm Little Danny:

I just wish there'd been some cats screeching for maximum effect
  Thu. 2/7/19 10:47pm dano59:

Just tuned in via phone (no internet for a few days) during the DJ break but so far sounding good, in theory anyway. Will test that on the archive spin cycle
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 10:49pm Little Danny:

Dano! Thanks! It IS good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:01pm melinda:

@chresti I had forgotten about Laura Scudders peanut butter. The brand name, that is. No fluff in our house though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:02pm melinda:

@Danny I was hoping for cat sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:03pm Little Danny:

My mom would spread a thick layer of whole-foods-y natural peanut butter on whole grain bread with a whispy dusting of jelly. It took several glasses of juice to get it swallowed
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:03pm melinda:

My aunt once got a punctured artery from separating cats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:05pm melinda:

@Danny I still have issues with the consistency of nut butters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:05pm Little Danny:

Big cats?! Like, zoo-sized?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:06pm melinda:

No, just regular cats. Maybe it was a vein and not an artery, but it was grisly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:09pm fleep:

Are we all on the same page with creamy vs crunchy? Are there any crunchy freaks in the house?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:09pm doctorjazz:

Bebop lives!
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:10pm dano59:

It's really the bread that makes the sandwich ... Fresh-baked, W/Jif or better-quality natural peanut butter, and preserves . Blueberry preferably
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:10pm still b/p:

Anybody ever hit the apple jelly? In grammar school pb and apple jelly (just consumer brand; not natural or local) was in hundreds of my lunch bags.
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:10pm dano59:

Make that Crunchy Jif
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:10pm Little Danny:

Still my favorite jazz, doc
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:11pm Dean:

I don't understand kids' fragile palates. I ate every/anything. For a short time I didn't go for avocado. But otherwise I could eat the same stuff day after day or some newfangled whatever. How is it that seemingly everybody is an unbearable food snob?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:11pm melinda:

Crunchy is a little weird, but seemed like a treat compared to the natural kind we had in my house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:11pm Little Danny:

@fleep: because of my health-conscious upbringing, I love creamy peanut butter the most. Junkier the better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:11pm doctorjazz:

Sax heaven, Stitt, then Johnny Griffen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:12pm Little Danny:

One more Griffin this set, doc. I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:14pm melinda:

I think everyone's tastes are wired a little differently.
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:18pm still b/p:

I offered the little radish slice on my deviled egg to any taker this evening. No like. Much evolution in my diet over the decades, but some of the responses are HARD-wired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:18pm doctorjazz:

Snake Walk, what a track! Crazy chaotic wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:19pm Little Danny:

and on Motown Records, doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:20pm Little Danny:

I'm with you, Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:21pm doctorjazz:

And pretty expensive on Discogs
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:21pm Little Danny:

The only common Western thing I can't really hang with is capers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:22pm Little Danny:

Indeed, weirdly expensive. I feel lucky to have found that battered copy
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:22pm melinda:

I've tried to like liver but it just doesn't work. I used to find goat dairy products gross but lately I've been enjoying goat cheese, though. I've talked to people who can't taste the difference between cow and goat, which suggests that we're just not tasting the same things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:24pm doctorjazz:

Can't stand the taste of goat cheese... A bit of really good chopped liver is good ,though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:24pm Little Danny:

Ah, yes, I forgot about organ meats. Rough stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:25pm doctorjazz:

Vibe-alicious!
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:25pm Dean:

Huh?! Capers?! I love capers, and I probably work too hard to find any dish where I can add them. Really, what's not to like?

I *love* liver.

I get the "hard wired" stuff, but only to a point, because I believe it's possible to sway folks to enjoy things they thought they didn't enjoy (perhaps due to "hard wiring"). But of course this begs the question. Maybe they're only hard-wired not generally to prefer something that they might otherwise tolerate or even like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:28pm melinda:

Organ meats used to be standard fare in earlier times, I wonder if we'd been forced to eat them a taste for it would have evolved? My mom would sometimes order liver and onions at the local cafeteria and I would ask for a bite since the onions made it smell good, and it still tasted like shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:30pm melinda:

@Dean it is possible to change tastes, to a point. But we're not all starting from the same point in terms of what we're sensitive to, in terms of taste and texture. Agree about capers, they really liven up many things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:31pm fleep:

Liver and onions at Musso & Frank was one of the funnest things I've ever done with calf guts, but to each their own
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:31pm chresti:

A smear of peanut or almond butter on acme cranberry walnut bread, is a favorite when I'm in the SF bay area.

- no peanut butter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:34pm melinda:

I find nut butters go better with things that are juicy ( like apple or celery) rather than dry (bread or crackers).
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

wow this comment board really took off since i last looked!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:35pm chresti:

I like capers
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:36pm Little Danny:

food discussion is a wide net, coel
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:36pm still b/p:

"I believe it's possible to sway folks to enjoy things they thought they didn't enjoy".....liiike, Brazilian music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:36pm melinda:

I first heard of capers watching the 70s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Donald Sutherland was a health inspector busting a chef for having a rat turd in his kitchen, and the chef insisted it was a caper. I didn't have them until years later but it piqued my curiosity.
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

my mother made us eat kidney stew. i literally almost vomited with each and every bite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:38pm Little Danny:

Wow. Kidney stew. Was this part of your mom's heritage, coel? It sounds esoteric
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:38pm coelacanth∅:

capers. eh. okay on some salmon benedict.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:39pm Little Danny:

Sorry. Sometimes there's just no way around Tomorrow Never Knows
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:39pm Dean:

Okay. I'll come straight. I think a lot of people with delicate palates are coddled babies.

I don't like Brazilian music. But, yeah, I could be swayed to enjoy it. I love Villa-Lobos and I enjoy Badi Assad, f'r instance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:39pm melinda:

Maybe in olden days people just suffered through disgusting meals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:40pm fleep:

Starvation will do that
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:40pm Dean:

The Beatles' version so far surpasses all others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:41pm chresti:

My parents ate kidneys, never even tried to make us eat them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:42pm melinda:

@Dean the thing is you don't know what they are experiencing when they eat certain foods, all you know is what you taste. Like some people have misophonia of the mouth.
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:43pm dano59:

Yo La Tengo did a Simpsons end theme in the style of TNK ... It's glorious.
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:43pm coelacanth∅:

Danny, we were not so well-off and my parents were close friends with a butcher (who closed shop when his mafia connections went south)
we got liver and tongue and kidneys for next to nothing and steak several times/week but it was full of grizzle and fat.
my mother grew up poor and ate everything available and expected us to do the same.
we had to eat everything on our plates or we may not leave the table. (and she filled our plates)
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:44pm still b/p:

Love the Beatles original, but recall enjoying the 801 cover of TNK for a while decades back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:45pm Little Danny:

@dano: thanks for the tip!!!
Avatar Thu. 2/7/19 11:46pm coelacanth∅:

organ meats are disgusting in general. my older brother liked liver and i grew to tolerate it because my mother served it with sauteed onions, bacon and ketchup. the kidney stew was just -well, not food.
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:46pm Dean:

I don't buy it, melinda. Of course I don't know what each person experiences, but I do know what the components of each food are. Folks with unusual conditions are by definition...unusual.
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:47pm dano59:

Ah , patents who grew up in the Depression. We stretched the family food dollar with bulk meat purchases from butcher to freezer, augmented by gardening, canning
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:47pm doctorjazz:

My parents were Polish, and liked Borsht (which I am able to tolerate as an adult couldn't stand it then) ,and a more exotic version of Borsht, called Schav, which was white had some greens in it and still turns my stomach if I think about it.
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:47pm Dean:

801 did a good job, but I am so disinclined to appreciate Eno that I can't give it much credit.
  Thu. 2/7/19 11:48pm Dean:

Love borscht. Next!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/7/19 11:52pm melinda:

@Dean I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt regarding that kind of stuff since it's no skin off my back if they don't like to eat everything. I mean, who cares? Also, I'm making borscht tomorrow!

The closest I've got to liver- is liverwurst sandwiches

i do think that being forced to eat everything my mother would eat conditioned me to be open to a much wider variety of foods than, say, my younger sister's kids (and many kids now) that are allowed to choose what they're having for dinner; and who ate candy for breakfast (chocolate cereals, etc) for their whole childhood.
i hated onions and peppers and radishes, etc, as a child.

Dean my brother worked at Warszawa, in Berkeley, for a short time

My mom, with a diet narrrow as hell and teased regularly for it, is 90. More veggies might've given her better eye health, but otherwise she's fine and sharp. I now WISH there'd been more variety and exposures and experiments at the dinner table, but in the growing up years, I was all for the narrowest reliable satisfactions.

Was a picky Eater as a child only learned to like food when I started eating out of my parents house.

I, too, give the benefit of the doubt, but that's because I can't possibly know for sure. However, the experience of food doesn't boil down to how an individual experiences it at one moment. Maybe today I can't stomach liver, but tomorrow I can. Our tastes change over relatively short periods of time. (Relative, that is, to the the longer timelines that pertain to evolution.)

Forcing does help expand one's tastes, to a point.

Just now I have a hankering for liver and onions...

My distaste for liver has been consistent through the years.

Tasty cool blue flavors! Thanks! Back in the chow line next time!

melinda, it can (as i think it did with me) but some things maybe not; and some things are psychological. like, i am disgusted by the *idea* of eating kidneys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/8/19 12:01am doctorjazz:

A nice chopped liver on a cracker, ahhh...

Very great show, LD.

I'm having crazy allergy attacks, lately
I notice young adults have more foods they don't like. I believe taste changes.
