Great choice Doug. The horns are wonderful on this.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

Big bear hug to you, herland erts!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:25am βrian:

"Choice Doug?" Why, that sounds like cut of loin.
  Fri. 2/1/19 10:26am Listener Gregory:

Doug, maybe someone should disable your ! key and force you to come up with some creative alternatives. This is the way great art is made.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Maybe just saw off my right arm or something. Then I'll have to adapt. It'll be interesting to see how I "handle it."
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

That was either Thierno Koité or Issa Cissokho (or both!) on saxophone.

Not a samba, that, is it?

Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:35am david w:

I have to give you a hug, Doug. And hi to all!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:37am Brian in UK:

Doug. Brian Eno's Oblique Strategy for today. 'Put down your quill and write in the air'.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

I just adore that DJ Food piece. I have the original recording sampled at the beginning of Dub Lion. If I remember correctly, it's from Haiti!

Hello, david w, King of Ridgewood!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:38am βrian:

Oh, I thought that was a reference to choice Doug. But it's really food *for* DJs, right?
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

@Brin in UK
When my daughter was little, she and I used to play tic-tac-toe in the air. When drew an imaginary grid and then just pointed at the imaginary squares. Almost never did anyone win and almost always did it end up with great rollicking hilarity ensuing.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

I'm thinking of giving myself the nom de radio "DJ Need Food."
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:42am βrian:

I was hoping for DJ Soylent, but it's your gig.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Sunny Murray doing a tune from South Pacific. Wow wow wow!!!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:42am JtotheK:

hiya doug, hi everyone.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:43am Brian in UK:

Doug oh those days seem so far off now but the memory lingers on.
Anything that ensues has to be good.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

Not from the South Pacific, silly, from South Pacific!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:43am glenn:

today i am dj shrinkage.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
If there's gonna be ensuing, just make sure you have a lawyer.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

TMI, my friend. TMI.
  Fri. 2/1/19 10:46am Listener Gregory:

Doug, there is a ligature between the f and i in your "Pacific." I hope everything is ok at home.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:47am burke:

My physical therapist told me I need to loosen up my ligature.
  Fri. 2/1/19 10:47am Listener Gregory:

Hmmm, there's a ligature in my comment now too. It must be the typefont of the comments list, because it doesn't appear in the entry box. This requires further investigation.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Call the editorial surgeon, there's ligature damage.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:48am chresti:

Hi david w- I miss you while I'm in a courtroom all day. I've never felt so deprived!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Whoops, burke beat me to it.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:51am βrian:

I read somewhere that the longest kiss ever was accompanied by a Dexter Gordon piece.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

How many babies have been conceived to Dexter Gordon, you have to wonder.
  Fri. 2/1/19 10:53am Listener Gregory:

I am diving into Dexter's sound and basking in its golden warmth. Whoops! Where's the sunscreen?
  Fri. 2/1/19 10:54am Mr C:

Classic Blue Note! Perfect for today..
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:54am Dave Sewelson:

Dexter Gordon used to keep the ligature far back
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

Things gon' get real.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

A couple of eminence grises, Mr C and Dave Sewelson. Welcome, gentlemen!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:58am Asheville Jon:

well, that sure changed direction rather abruptly
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

We've had a Sonny and a Sunny in this set, but it's still snowing like a beast here in Iceburgh.
  Fri. 2/1/19 10:58am Listener Gregory:

This is also prime conception music in certain circles.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 10:58am glenn:

@Asheville Jon
And they shall turn back again, most delightful Lee.

This is the soundtrack to driving to the courthouse in the morning.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:00am Artie:

Sudden feelings of peace and relaxation washing over me...
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

I am 100% guilty.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:00am Asheville Jon:

not saying it's a bad thing, just wasn't quite expecting it :D
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:00am βrian:

"J'accuse !"
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

You've always been a hygiene nut, Artie.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:01am chresti:

It's 50 above and sunny here.
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:01am Listener Gregory:

It's just a shame that the album title "Monkey-Pockie-Boo" has already been taken.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:02am Brian in UK:

Challenging music for challenging times.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Let's see. That would make it 100 above.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:03am chresti:

I don't know why that comment appears twice
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:04am chresti:

It's 100 minus 50 above
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

The more the merrier, chresti. Bring it on!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:05am glenn:

31 cm of snow and temps of -20 c this week here in little malta. that is all.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

Convert that to English, please, glenn.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:07am Asheville Jon:

31cm is ~12"/ a foot
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:08am chresti:

It's cold in glenn's world.
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:10am Listener Gregory:

Jeanne Lee sounded somewhat like Nina Simone in that cut. I'm glad to know about this disk.
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:10am Dean:

Play some more Sonny. That'll warm things up.
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:11am Listener Gregory:

Whoops! Jazz accuracy police! I think it was King Pleasure who first did the vocal of Parker's Mood. But I think you're right that Eddie Jefferson wrote the lyrics.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Jeanne Lee, Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln. The magi.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
King Pleasure has no truck with me. This is an Eddie Jefferson household over here.
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:19am Listener Gregory:

I had to look in an actual book to piece this together: King Pleasure wrote Parker's Mood himself; Jefferson wrote "Moody's Mood For Love" for KP, who had a big hit with it.
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:20am Listener Gregory:

Also, for future reference, be advised that information on King Pleasure may be found under "Pleasure, King." However, if you try to Google that, I can't say what you might find.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I learned everything I know from Bob Guerin.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:22am βrian:

Pleasure King sits atop his throne, holding his Hitachi wand.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

King Pleasure wrote "Parker's Mood," but Eddie Jefferson's version is the definitive version. I'm putting my foot down on this one.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:23am Bob Guerin:

!*****DILDO REFERENCE******!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:23am Bob Guerin:

OK, maybe not literally a dildo, but you know what I meant.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:25am βrian:

You mean a scepter, perhaps?
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:25am Listener Gregory:

Doug, I agree with you on the Jefferson version. It runs through my head on close to a 24-hour basis. My book informs me that Jefferson was primarily a tap dancer early in his career. I would not have guessed that.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Still an open wound that Jefferson's murderer has never been found or identified.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:30am Jeff Golick:

Belated greets and thank ye's, @Doug. You made my morning commute much more BEARable AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHahahahahaHA.

Dexter Gordon's GO album was one of my main entry points to this thing we call...jazz?
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:31am Stanley:

Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Keep your hands on the wheel, Jeff Golick!
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:34am rw:

Good morning! It's Friday! Woo!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:36am Goyim in the AM:

Man I dig that Undecided? record. Every time I've tried to learn anything about them, I end up with information about a Christian punk band that stole the name including the question mark!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:38am Brian in UK:

Doug, just got a copy of The Delines' The Imperial. Country/Soul for want of a category. Recommended.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Woo to you, rw!

@Goyim in the AM
Damn them to Hell!

I need to know more!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:42am JtotheK:

Yay! This Inspirations 45 is so great. And for some reason I haven't found it in a dollar bin. YET.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:42am Brian in UK:

Amy Boone has a lovely voice. You can see why Willy Vlautin picked her as his muse.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Get a load of this Jackson 5 rip-off outfit. But here's the thing. They recorded contemporaneously with Jackson 5 and on the same Gary, Indiana, label as the Jackson 5. And their lead singer was a pre-teen named Michael.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

In other words, it's not entirely clear exactly who was copying who!

@Doug - the Inspirations 45 - the discogs page has a comment from the lead singer. with contact info. I'm too shy: Please call him and ask if he'd kindly send me a spare of his 45 in exchange for a very nice thank you card and promise that I play it out at my next opportunity to play 45s out. thanks in advance!!!

Gary is quite the sight. I've never stopped there, but I've driven through many times.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

I'm all over it, JtotheK!
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:46am Marie:

Hello Doug (and all). I've said it once and I'll say it again, I love the soul cuts you play! (and the whole show). Thank-ee!
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:48am Listener Gregory:

"I'm just a lonely intruder" is the worst alibi for a breaking and entering charge, by the way. I just happen to know that.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Oh Marie, hooray! Gladness!
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:51am Listener Gregory:

Very Blue Bland-ish
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

By the way, friends, did you notice the Nine Wonder of the World that just occurred? Mr C said "never heard this."
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

Miles Standish, Bobby Blandish. OK, that's all I got.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

"What you doin' is funkier than Watergate, honey."

Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

The pleasure is mine, Sir.
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:57am Listener Gregory:

I wonder if "Love Came to Me" is an answer song to "Lonely Intruder"?
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

Here's Marva Whitney with the closer.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:57am chresti:

Thanks for everything drummer Doug!
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:57am Sem:

I second that emotion, BiUK.
Thanks, Doug, for right some good morning of music.
FYI: "some" is used as a positive intensifier in the vernacular of this part of the world.
For superior goodness, "right some" in employed.
Later, all.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:58am JtotheK:

enjoyed the show Doug. thanks!
  Fri. 2/1/19 11:58am Mr C:

Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

This track had been previously unissued. How the fookin hell do you capture this bit of genius and then put the kibosh on releasing it?
