Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

Kaopectate used to be made out of kaolinite and pectin. Until the 1980s when the FDA decided clay was not a good thing. Despite it working for decades. Now Kaopectate is no different than other crappy salicylate medicine. |

Thu. 1/24/19 8:17pm
JakeGould:
My dad used to give me Kaopectate when I was a kid and had what ailed me and it worked great! In contrast, I am sensitive to salicylate stuff and it makes me look like a pale ghost when I take it. |
Thu. 1/24/19 8:17pm

Hey! Excuse me if I tune out early and catch up via the archive, I've had a "snottynose" all week. Diggin the show as always thus far.

One more tune...(always best to dip out during a song and not the sermon, right? Although here, the music is the sermon!)
Thu. 1/24/19 8:20pm
Listener Robert:
You can still buy kaolin in as pure a grade as for drug purposes, and you can easily get food grade pectin, if you want to make your own Kaopectate. I don't even know why bismuth subsalicylate gets a free pass.
![]() |
Thu. 1/24/19 8:22pm
JakeGould:
@ListenerRobert: Because the FDA is as corrupt as most anything else and in the 1980s Reagan helped dismantle and weaken protections in favor of profit. You can also get Kaopectate equivalents at pet food stores. |

Similar story for terpene hydrate cough syrup. Someone should come out with a terpene hydrate liqueur. I bet Buckley's included terpene hydrate as an "inactive" ingredient, i.e. "flavoring".

@Folsom: Canada is a great place. I also learned last night about Toronto’s raccoons. So many of them! |

@Folsom: You can still get cough syrup with codeine in Canada, right? @sinner: Is it the same smell as flat clay coated mailers? |
Thu. 1/24/19 8:25pm
Listener Robert:
I meant Buckley's cough syrup probably includeS, present tense.

Whenever the stress of working for them affected my stomach I guess I should have just shredded a page or two and drink it down with a cold glass of water. |

JakeGould:
@Folsom: Apparently yes. But more like a city neighborhood that has a lot of strays. I have like 16 strays near me in a 2 block radius. |

sinner:
Humans in places crave the minerals where they have a diet deficiency. |
![]() |
Thu. 1/24/19 8:34pm
JakeGould:
Kaolin absorbs toxins so you can “expel” them. Also, Kaopectate is useful if you want to drink but not really get that drunk. Like take a tablespoon, go drink and there you go… NOT AS DRUNK!!! |
![]() |
Thu. 1/24/19 8:37pm
Folsom:
@Jake does that still work with the new stuff or only the original? |
![]() |
Thu. 1/24/19 8:38pm
JakeGould:
@Folsom: The new stuff is just branding. Old formula but any clay-based stomach medicine should work the same. |
![]() |
Thu. 1/24/19 8:39pm
JakeGould:
Or just get some that white dirt, and same diff. Mix it with applesauce and there you go. |
