For having such a basic structure with lots of air in it, I end up hearing more stuff in Hipnosis every time. After years of it, the thing still opens up like a bizarre little flower in the sun...

Thanks for breaking out this Pharoah record, reminds me I need to add it back into my regular listening rotation. Something about the bells (especially on "Prince of Peace") make a good sonic fit over the holiday season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 9:49am Ken From Hyde Park:

Ow! Gave myself a minor paper cut on my upper lip as I lick an envelope too hurriedly. Why do things that happen to stupid people always keep happening to me?!?!?

@Scott - I have picked up a relatively cheap Japanese Strata-East repress of "Izipho Zam" at the FMU record show a few years back, glad I jumped on it when I did.

Oh that's cool, was not aware there were reissues floating around until recently.
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 10:12am PKNY:

At work so I don't have it handy, but according to Discogs, it's a mid-1990s repress --> www.discogs.com...

I'm not sure what instrument Ware is playing. It sounds nasal like a soprano but doesn't seem pitched that high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 10:56am tim from champaign:

Howdy everyone. Just jumped in the waters. Looks like I've missed an excellent show so far. I thirdly concur that Jim White is the best. I think his mustachio makes him an even better drummer.
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 10:57am jt:

"The Balance" ...good to hear music like that is being made with the intensity like before but still new....

It just takes a closet full of dusty blazers and oddball polyrhythms, a stick of dynamite, and voilà.
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:23am dk:

even as palace music tunes go, that is one fantastic palace music tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:24am Greg from ZONE 5:

As I said to Scott W: Jim is as loose as I am uptight. It's gonna take some serious life changes…
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:26am northguineahills:

I got to the "E"s in my queue and was listening to Bill Evans this weekend (Only took 16 months).

Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:31am YETI BOB:

@PassaicRiverBlues: Sure, George Clinton too. But Scott hasn't played any George Clinton this morning (at least, not yet!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:31am mb:

Plainfield represent! My favorite Plainfieldian is Lee Fields, of course.
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:33am coelacanth∅:

David Ware lived in scotch plains. i had dinner at his house there.
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:35am coelacanth∅:

(though i think he was born in plainfield)
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:36am northguineahills:

YettI Bob: thanks for the invaluable information. All I got from current town is Tom Petty, Bo Diddley, and some ska and emo-core bands to work w/ (and I'm just using musicians form at least 20+ years ago).
  Wed. 12/19/18 11:39am Mr. Palchepo.:

Great program this morning!
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:39am northguineahills:

Sam Rivers, relocated from NYC to Orlando, I got to see him many times as an undergrad, as he was one of the few jazz greats that would play around. He brought Mathew Shipp and William Parker w/ him on one tour (first time I saw all of the aforementioned), and it brought me out of my indie ghetto when I was 19)
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:39am dk:

i clearly have biases to overcome, because i thought "oooh, this is nice", saw it was brubeck, and thought twice about commenting to that effect. so, in the name of overcoming biases: ooh, this brubeck thing is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:44am mb:

Must roll on. Superb selections today DJ Scott McDowell. Thank-you
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:45am tim from champaign:

@dk - I hear you and have felt similarly. I'm not one for straight jazz but at some point I realized that Dave Brubeck is actually pretty interesting and enjoyable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:45am steveo:

Digging Brubeck Quartet. Not used to hearing so few beats per measure from them.
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:46am northguineahills:

@dk: WFMU helped me overcome my predicerned biases. I'm more open minded b/c of it.
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:49am YETI BOB:

Take 4!
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:50am dk:

me too, northguineahills. what's great is that after literally decades of obsessive listening, i've still got preconceptions like that and the FMU DJs KEEP kicking them down.

so, thanks scott!
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:51am northguineahills:

Heck, even Clay Pigeon has made me reevaluate 90s bands I hated the first time around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:54am steveo:

clay plays some serious gems
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:54am tim from champaign:

@ngh - which bands? Last year I did an experiment with myself to check out 90s major label albums that I had ignored back then (ie Butthole Surfers, Meat Puppets, etc) Some were better than I expected and some really stunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:54am steveo:

GEMS I TELL YOU
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:55am Scott McDowell:

1954, super hip! so coooooool.
Avatar Wed. 12/19/18 11:56am northguineahills:

@tim: your aforementioned were respected, but not on my listening list until the last few years, the only one I can think of now is Hole, was I disassociated the personality of the lead singer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:56am steveo:

very enjoyable show to me; thanks DJ Scott
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/19/18 11:56am doctorjazz:
