hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Helloooo, @Gary!
@Listener Gregory: Roscoe Crunch? Hey.
@hyde: Hi hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:15am doctorjazz:

Hey all just checking in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:15am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @doctorjazz!
  Sun. 12/9/18 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Ready for OUTlandish sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:25am Jeff Golick:

@Doug! I will try to oblige.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:32am Jeff Golick:

So yeah this is a palindrome.
  Sun. 12/9/18 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

Did I hear “Mr. anus beer”? I believe I did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Yeah. "Jeff" just went by, too.
  Sun. 12/9/18 9:32am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, could you type the text into the comments so we can check it? Thx
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Hahahah.

I've been looking for the text online, and can't find it anywhere, despite many many references to the thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:39am Uncle Michael:

Go dog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:40am Jeff Golick:

@UM! Mu!
  Sun. 12/9/18 9:41am Gary via app:

My phone autocorrected “Thirding Mr. Anus Beer” to “Thirsting Mr. Anis Beer.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:42am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff, the OUT crowd, and the knights that say "mu".
  Sun. 12/9/18 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

He came to free the words.
  Sun. 12/9/18 9:42am Listener Gregory:

So, I'm wondering whether this is in fact a string of palindromes rather than one long one, which is what I understood from last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:45am duke:

Do Good etc. was pretty amazing, but I'm not going to check if it really was a palindrome.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 9:45am Peter from DE:

Good morning everyone. Have missed being in your company!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:45am Jeff Golick:

@Sem! Great to see you.

@LG: that's a fair question. It did sound like that, but I'm not one to judge palindromes. That's best left to...the...dog-gods?
  Sun. 12/9/18 9:46am Listener Gregory:

Wait, if you string together a bunch of palindromes, and then invert them, you have one long palindrome... This is *blowing my mind*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:48am Jeff Golick:

@Peter from DE! Thanks for checking in, and likewise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 9:48am Jeff Golick:

(@Peter, you've been putting together some wonderful shows!)
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 9:50am Peter from DE:

Thanks, Jeff! (A high compliment, coming from you.) My next show celebrates McCoy Tyner's 80th birthday (this Tuesday).
  Sun. 12/9/18 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Jeanne Lee eel en naej! Hey, this is easy.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 9:56am Peter from DE:

@doug Hahahahaha

  Sun. 12/9/18 9:57am Listener Gregory:

Huh! I'm making "eel en naej" for dinner tonight... Danish specialty.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 10:05am Peter from DE:

"cool cool i'm good with this" reminds me of The Mountain Goats: "I'm pretty hardcore but I'm not that hardcore"

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:08am Jeff Golick:

@LG: haey ho
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Bienvenue, @fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:17am fred:

Does Chris Speed qualify?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

I've always loved clarinetist Pee Wee Russell. A raging modernist hidden inside a buttoned-down traditionalist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:19am Jeff Golick:

@fred: yes, I'd say so.

@Doug: school me on some Pee Wee!
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 10:21am Peter from DE:

I feel like Robinson was always there but under the radar. First really registered with me very late -- William Parker's Bob's Pink Cadillac. And then I realized he was all over the place: Henry Grimes, the Liberation Music Orchestra, Annette Peacock
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:24am hyde:

if i have one job on WFMU, it's to bring up Jimmy Giuffre when jazz clarinetists come up
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

The poet Philip Larkin on Pee Wee Russell: "No one familiar with the characteristic excitement of his solos, their lurid, snuffling, asthmatic voicelessness, notes leant on till they split, and sudden passionate intensities, could deny the uniqueness of his contribution to jazz."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:26am doctorjazz:

Really have a thing for Pee Wee Russell as well, great tone and approach, slightly demented (in a good way), playing Dixieland/Austin Street Gang music but always subverting it
Saw Robinson way back in one of the NY Lofts when that was how new jazz was being presented.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:26am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @hyde! It's reassuring to know you're covering the Giuffre beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:26am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Hopping on with a howdy to all those Destined for OUTness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:28am Jeff Golick:

@Peter: Yes, agreed. When PR showed up, good things happened. I feel as though there's no "late" in this context, though I understand the feeling. We come to these artists when we do, when we can...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:29am Jeff Golick:

@Doug, brave to quote Larkin on jazz (though a great quote).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:29am Jeff Golick:

@Granny Spicy Tuna! Keep hopping!
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 10:33am Peter from DE:

wait, that's Kenny Barron?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:35am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, crazy, right? Backing Robinson on that Funk Dumpling record: Kenny Barron, Henry Grimes, Paul Motian! 1962!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:38am hyde:

@JG wow, that's a lineup
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 10:39am Peter from DE:

Wow that's an incredible trio! PR had KB before Dizzy! And this is Motian during his Bill Evans days. Crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:47am doctorjazz:

I can see why Doug mentioned Pee Wee when PR started... He definitely picked up a lot from Pee Wee in sound and approach .
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

I gotta run. The Pitt school of medicine's Neurology Dept (my employer) is having its annual holiday brunch. Gotta go have some, um, brain food.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 10:49am Peter from DE:

Doug you crack me up
  Sun. 12/9/18 10:49am Dean:

The nerve of that department!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 10:51am Jeff Golick:

The cranial nerve! Bye, @Doug! @Dean, you can have Doug's seat.
  Sun. 12/9/18 10:55am Dean:

Nice. It's still warm.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:00am glenn:

doug works for zombies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
That's because I hadn't got up yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:02am Jeff Golick:

@glenn! (Shhhh!)

  Sun. 12/9/18 11:05am Listener Gregory:

Have to leave to See Art, unfortunately. Will check out the rest of the show on the archive, Jeff. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:07am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for being here, @LG! Say hi to Art for me.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:10am glenn:

oh, day job jeff, another good mystery series is the kramer and zondi set, by james mcclure. they're set in south africa in the 60's and 70's, and have a good feel for the times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:11am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @glenn! That's one I'm vaguely familiar with. Does the first one have "pig" in the title? I think Soho Press publishes it now.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:11am Peter from DE:

okay, this rhythm trio ain't bad either
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Yup, @Peter. Looks Robinson recorded with this crew a bunch during his latter years.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:14am glenn:

yes, the steam pig. oh, and ivanka trump's new book is titled "daddy and grampa are golfing. how to talk to children about prison".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:17am fred:

@glenn: the chilling thing about impeachment is that it would mean President Pence
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:19am glenn:

pence is in just as much jeopardy as trump. after all, it was manafort who recommended him for the post.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:20am glenn:

or maybe decreed, not recommended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:21am hyde:

@glenn i read a couple of those Kramer and Zondi books, they were good
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:23am coelacanth∅:

good morning Jeff & all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:23am fred:

Then again, prime minister Ford may not be as scary as it used to be, but still...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:24am Jeff Golick:

@coelacanth∅! Hi!
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:26am Peter from DE:

I'm listening through headphones and this mix is crazy (bass hard left, drums hard right). Making me wonder if there was an ESP "sound" across their releases -- if you don't hear from me for weeks it's b/c i'm down that hole. If anyone has any knowledge that will save me, please speak up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:27am Jeff Golick:

Noticed the same, @Peter. I don't know if there's an ESP, sound, per se, because often Stollman just got tapes from the musicians.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:28am Peter from DE:

I suspected that most ESPs were produced by the musicians.
Avatar Sun. 12/9/18 11:30am glenn:

one term doug has ZERO chance of becoming p.m. that fat greasy subliterate goat fucking weasel barely speaks english, and doesn't speak french at all, and pretty much goes out of his way to fuck the french at every opportunity. he's already lost the next provincial election, and he's only 6 months into a 4 year term.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:31am hyde:

@Peter from DE you can try to compare by listening to the WHRB ESP avant jazz orgy this week if you want. 8 hours straight of ESP jazz records. It's Thursday the 13th, 5 AM - 1 PM USA Eastern Standard time. Can stream it here: www.whrb.org

Unbelievably, I haven't had any potato latkes yet this year!?

@Dean: heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:42am coelacanth∅:

Wow, Van the Man barely out of puberty on that. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:46am coelacanth∅:

@coel i might need to get that thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:47am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and listeners.
Is it fifty years, seems like only twenty five. Joe McGasko is doing a show about this album tomorrow with Jim Price.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:48am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @Brian! Excellent - thanks for the Joe n Jim reminder/announcement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:49am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:55am coelacanth∅:

i found this interesting article last week about the "The BEATLES" box: people.com...
(i thought it was interesting anyway)
...though it does make it seem like all the stories about how disharmonious the beatles were (in a personal sense only!) are not true; when they definitely are true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:57am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: I see what you did there, but I can't stop looking at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:57am fred:

Damn, I usually can't listen from work anymore, but next week will be meetings all day long. Something about the state of musical research, though the real action will take place between sessions, if at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:57am hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/9/18 11:58am Brian in UK:
