Big news
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:09pm Funky16Corners:

We've had a very wet and windy few days here in NJ
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Do you think Bob has ever done an other people doing his songs on his Theme Time Radio show?
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:09pm Funky16Corners:

I don't know but that'd be very interesting
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:11pm chresti:

Waiting for traffic to die down, people start driving really crazy when it's supposed to rain soon
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:12pm Funky16Corners:

It sounds like NJ drivers and snow, like they've never seen it before. They either go way too slow or way too fast.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:13pm Franco Twinkie:

I know, kind of like Panic In The Year Zero.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:14pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, and we live in retirement community ground zero. Hordes of superannuated folks, all driving huge cars in erratic ways.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:15pm still b/p:

Roxy Music in 1976 did Hard Rain in concert and snowish confetti precipitated heavily down onto the stage. Crowd seemed to love it of course. Seemed like a cheap, though messy, and clumsy effect. Drummer Paul Thompson wore a towel on his head as he played through the soft squall.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:16pm Funky16Corners:

I would have loved to have seen that
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:16pm Franco Twinkie:

"Cause the vandals stole the handles. Did he say it?
  Wed. 11/28/18 10:20pm rw:

Hey! I thought this was Lee Moses channeling Billy Stewart singing Dylan.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:21pm chresti:

I love cheesy special effects
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:24pm chresti:

I heard a lot of Bob Dylan when I was 10
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:24pm Franco Twinkie:

You're on the dime, Larry. I know I'm just an old man who's opinions are like onion breath, but shit dude, the kids just don't know.
  Wed. 11/28/18 10:25pm rw:

I wonder what it would be like to get sick of this song (Mr. Tambourine Man).
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

It doesn't take much digging to get through to that rich, creamy, Bob Dylan-y center. He's everywhere in the 60s and 70s, and most of it holds up very well.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - I could never get sick of the Byrds
  Wed. 11/28/18 10:26pm Bluesman:

Love the mix on Mr. TM. Is this gtom the lp?
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:26pm still b/p:

Heard an excerpt today of alt and very different take of Let It Be from new White Album box set, and it seemed to me Paul's delivery was leaning into Dylan-style emphasis and inflection.

Blues - Lifted from the box set that came out in the 90s
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:27pm Erica:

This mix of Mr Tambourine Man sounds different. I know it's the Byrds version but it's hard to hear the actual tambourine, hence the name of the song.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:28pm Erica:

Also I didn't know that this Cher song was a Bob Dylan cover.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:29pm Erica:

Or at least written by Dylan.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

That mix of Mr Tambourine Man is from this set www.discogs.com...
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Which song? All I Really Want To Do?
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:31pm Erica:

Yes Larry.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

Also covered by the Byrds
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:34pm Erica:

Funny how many of Dylan's songs were bigger hits when covered by other artists of that time.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

Many of the covering artists added layers of pop polish (as well as a bridge or two) to the songs which made them more appealing to record buyers
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:41pm Franco Twinkie:

One night in 1971, when I was sixteen, I was watching some crap on TV, when my sister came home and said very blithely ".... And then Bob Dylan showed up". Recently I asked her about it, and she couldn't remember(!?!) She thinks maybe it was in the gym at Cal State Fullerton where her and her friend Kathy went to see Crabby Appleton and Little Feat. I know Bob covered Willin', so who knows. But can you imagine forgetting something like that?
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

I would not forget something like that...
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:45pm chresti:

Joan Baez does a nice Baby Blue
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:46pm Franco Twinkie:

So do The Thirteenth Floor Elevators.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

As do Them and the 13th Floor Elevators
  Wed. 11/28/18 10:46pm rw:

Oh, yeah, Franco, I had forgotten your sister saw Dylan that one time.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

Franco beat me to the punch!
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:47pm Parq:

There are covers of Dylan's "Saved" stuff. Just saying.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:48pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq!
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Rw, you were there, right? She remembered you, but not Dylan.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:48pm Erica:

AmI hearing audio drop outs from one speaker or is it just my earphones?
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

My signal is OK
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:49pm Erica:

It's not a signal problem, it's an audio problem.
  Wed. 11/28/18 10:50pm Jeff g.:

Hi Jeff!

  Wed. 11/28/18 10:52pm rw:

Franco, yes. If memory serves.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

That, Highway 61 and Blonde On Blonde are perfection
  Wed. 11/28/18 10:53pm Jeff g.:

Any Fairport lined up?
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed!

F16C, this show is a good one. Super fun.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 10:54pm Franco Twinkie:

Not to mention granny glasses.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

Yes, granny glasses, tons and tons of granny glasses!
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:05pm rw:

Hmmm.... Andy Williams.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:06pm Funky16Corners:

Andy was pretty hip in his choice of musical guests.
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:06pm rw:

Peter Paul and Mary sound good
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:07pm Funky16Corners:

Some of the first 'folk' music I was exposed to.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:08pm still b/p:

Caught an old Williams program a couple years ago -- Andy Williams' Kaleidoscope Company -- that was pretty good. Almost all music, very little shtick. Simon and Garfunkel, Mama Cass, Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles.
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:08pm rw:

Ha! What about The Kingston Trio?
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:09pm rw:

The Mighty Quinn was a Bob Dylan song??
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:10pm Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed!
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:10pm Dean:

And Manfred Mann had a hit from it.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - One of my favorite Mam Cass performances is from that show, a version of Joni Mitchell's 'I Had a King'
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:11pm Franco Twinkie:

This is great. Bob came up with lots of very good melodies.
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:11pm Dean:

I'm wondering who, if anybody, has covered "Jokerman."
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:11pm rw:

I can't picture it. All I can hear is Manfred Mann.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:12pm Erica:

Me too rw.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Julie London channels Mae West.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:14pm Funky16Corners:

That Julie London album is cool.
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:17pm Dean:

Jimmy LaFave (RIP) delivered a number of sweet Dylan covers. He deserves exposure.
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:18pm rw:

Blowing in the Wind was one of my dad's favorite songs. Which is weird because he hated hippies so much.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:18pm Funky16Corners:

I'm not famliar with him.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:20pm Erica:

Bobby Womack sounds like Jimi Hendrix here.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:20pm Erica:

Sounded I mean.
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:21pm Dean:

He tended to hang around Texas (e.g., Austin) and Oklahoma, but occasionally headed out west for , e.g., the Kate Wolf Festival. Died way too young a couple years ago. His albums are wonderful, and he issued a series of bootleg-like outtakes and live shows, dubbed Trail, that are a great entry point. I miss him. Got to meet him at Winters in Northern California in a little venue, the Opera House (yeah, a little venue) a few years ago. No idea he was already terminally ill.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:21pm coelacanth∅:

  Wed. 11/28/18 11:23pm Dean:

Here's just one track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5djKIxN1cQ His drummer, Bobby Kallus, is amazing, utterly musical.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:25pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - I'll look for his stuff
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:26pm rw:

Wow. This isn't Alex Chilton singing? Sounds just like him.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

Roger McGuinn
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

pp&m was my first exposure to "folk", but also probably my first exposure to real music. (either pp&m's fisrt and 3rd albums; or Harry Belafonte's "calypso")
they didn't dare put their names under the Dylan songs, so i knew the name, though it was a few years before i heard Dylan himself.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:28pm Franco Twinkie:

I love this iteration of The Byrds. Like Love, they got super heavy in order to survive. And they took a lot of shit for it.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:31pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Dr Byrds is my fave Byrds album, thanks in large part to Clarence White
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:33pm Franco Twinkie:

Yeah, They didn't jangle once Clarence was driving the bus.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:34pm Funky16Corners:

His guitar on that album is mind blowing
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:35pm Franco Twinkie:

Bad Night At The Whisky.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

that's funny Larry - the album that fared the worst with both the critics (most of whom can go fuck themselves anyway) and the public as well. i don't like it much myself, though i don't listen to the byrds much in general.
...i like the Crosby byrds best, though. the 3 albums up to his and Clarke's departure.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

I love all the Byrds stuff, but Dr Byrds has some amazing songs and playing on it.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:40pm coelacanth∅:

i never cared for the byrds, but i decided last year sometime to listen to their entire studio output (in chronological order) and try to listen with openness. -and make a playlist. if i'm not mistaken there are maybe a handful of songs from each of the firat 2 albums; almost all of the 3rd - 5th albums; then only 3 or 4 from each album after that.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:41pm Funky16Corners:

There's a lot of push and pull on all of those albums between McGuinn, Crosby, Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, Clarence White and on and on ad infinitum
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:41pm Franco Twinkie:

It's all good, but I like the (De)evolution - transformation.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

...i generally dislike their Dylan covers. "you ain't goin' nowhere" by the byrds is a forever and always favorite though. maybe the only song i saved from that album!
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:42pm coelacanth∅:

oh yeah they never seemed to get along!
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:43pm Funky16Corners:

Crosby carried his assholism with him wherever he went
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:44pm coelacanth∅:

that's what i've heard.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Can you imagine been trapped in a station wagon with David Crosby?
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:44pm Dean:

You'll be encouraged (or not) to know that OED has no entry for "assholism."
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

They'd better fix that, soon.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:46pm coelacanth∅:

you do know right Larry that Dylan claims no authorship to easy rider?
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:48pm Funky16Corners:

He is an uncredited co-author, at least according to the story...
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:49pm Funky16Corners:

if I hear from Bob's attorney's I will defer to him
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:50pm coelacanth∅:

right...but he doesn't (or at least didn't) want to be!

Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:51pm Franco Twinkie:

Time to re-read Chronicles
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:52pm Dean:

OED does have an entry for "attorney." That should suffice for "assholism."
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:53pm Funky16Corners:

Fairport does a beautiful version of this one, too
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:54pm rw:

Hey Larry, I was just sitting here thinking how great it is that you (and so many others under the WFMU umbrella) do this thing so we can all hang out and listen to music together. Makes working at the computer slightly less productive but so much more palatable! Thank you once again!
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:55pm coelacanth∅:

Franco, the best! -and noticing your comment earlier i'll add that Dylan called 13th floor elevators' version of "baby blue" his favorite one. but you probably know that.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:56pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - I agree. There's something special about these get togethers!
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:56pm coelacanth∅:

haha! sorry i got confused there, between Larry's comment and Franco's from before.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Good one Larry! Gotta go - Chrestie just showed up with a pizza marijuana.
  Wed. 11/28/18 11:56pm Dean:

Not to overstate the point, but Jimmy LaFave really belongs here. He adored Dylan as a songwriter, and he was himself a great songwriter.
Avatar Wed. 11/28/18 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Larry goodnight y'all
Avatar Thu. 11/29/18 12:00am Erica:

I gotta go now too Larry. Thanks for the Bob Dylan show.
