Why can't they make great slow songs anymore where you can hear every word and the melody gets under your skin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:14pm coelacanth∅:

did that song "i need you" have a resurgence around 1975?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:14pm chresti:

I wandered away from top 40 radio by the latter part of 72
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:14pm Gaylord Fields:

Richard Dryfus. I recall that movie.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:21pm pp:

I learn everything from Gaylord. Aptronym had to look up. Another fave singer, exact opposite of Ms. McCoo is Ms. McKee

Gaylord it's i need you that i stole *part of* the melody of; and *part of* the lyrics of in one of my early attempts at writing a song, which would've been c.75...maybe it just finally sunk in after 3 years.

@Zardoz: It may be overplayed IRL, granted, but WFMU ain't the real world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:24pm jillydg:

Funny how well I know some of these songs but could never name the artist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:24pm TDK60:

..people used to smoke cigarettes more then.. // Wither's earthy rootsiness was so refreshing.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:24pm Zardoz:

This song could have been an early Bee Gees song.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:25pm JTKMDNY:

Gaylord: Totally! I love this stuff. No way even commercial radio would put it together like you do! they would play maybe one or two but not a string of them!
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:25pm Zardoz:

Almost sounds like Barry Singing
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:25pm jillydg:

Zardoz! That's who I would have said it was...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Waiting to see if any movie songs made the cut, like the one from The Poseidon Adventure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:25pm melinda:

Gilbert does have a Bee Gees sound
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:26pm JayD:

Loving tonight’s show especially, Gaylord! I always tune in when I’m cooking dinner, you provide the perfect soundtrack. Knocking it out of the park tonight with the comfort music. Thank you!!!
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:26pm Zardoz:

Commercial radio is for the zombie masses with no real taste for music in my opinion
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:27pm coelacanth∅:

i know every one of these songs but i haven't heard most of them more than once or twice in >40 years, so -not overplayed.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:27pm Zardoz:

FYI I just stumbled on WFMU last week and I’m loving the variety. I also love Bronwyns voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:28pm Booz:

There's a lot of 1972 in 2018. Was at a show just last night where both acts had a fair amount of Karen Carpenter in their DNA. And both were amazing.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:29pm JTKMDNY:

Zardoz: totally agree with your characterization of commercial radio. I just donated my 1975 WMFU Survival Marathon t-shirt back to WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:29pm coelacanth∅:

eat a peach was 1972.
...just saying.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:29pm pp:

Boooz: who was that? need to know
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:30pm Fuzzy:

Gilbert O'Sullivan, Cat Stevens: Not His Real Name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:30pm TDK60:

..you may discern a sort of melancholy in some of these tracks, presented in a soft-pop sheen.. // '72 had a weird drug trend: downs and Quaaludes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:31pm chresti:

I loved smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee (coffee forever!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

when alone again (naturally) came out i thought it was Paul McCartney.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:32pm Fuzzy:

Neil Diamond (not his real name) soundalike.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:33pm Zardoz:

Yesterday I purposely played Taxi by Harry Chapin. I fly so high when I’m stoned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:34pm coelacanth∅:

my parents got the gallery 45. never thought of Neil Diamond, who my mother adored (of course) -but now i hear it.

Johnny Nash next?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

For what'sever reason, I remember hearing "Brandy" when mom was driving us back after a trip to the grocery store. Funny what a person remembers like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:40pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:44pm Gaylord Fields:

Not Bread!
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:44pm Zardoz:

Play Down on My Knees by Bread
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:45pm Fuzzy:

Bread seems to be the generic term for early 70's soft rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:45pm Gaylord Fields:

@Zardoz: I wish I could. It's an excellent song but not a hit.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:47pm Cooh John:

A friend's mom had all of Bread on 8 track.
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:47pm Zardoz:

WFMU is not about hits. It’s about going off the rails.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:49pm Nardo:

Here's a minor 72 hit that doesn't belong but I remember it from one of those Have a Nice Day Rhino comps and it's worth the listen - Giorgio "Son of My Father" (wait til the show is over of course) youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:49pm TDK60:

cheesy fondue partee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:49pm coelacanth∅:

i like cheesy music more than i like cheese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:49pm Booz:

Booz: thanks. will check them out
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

i guess there weren't any hits off "on the corner" were there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:50pm JakeGould:

@Zardoz: WFMU is also not about playing requests. Unless Amazon or Apple create a “Hey Gaylord…” function. Now that would be something!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

Yay Carole King!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:52pm Gaylord Fields:

@Nardo: I almost played it, but it wasn't a big enough hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:52pm Booz:

@pp Would say that they both have soft-ish urbane feel, but don't actually sound like KC. If you're looking for that lush voice, try Rumer, & her album Boys Don't Cry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:53pm JakeGould:

Bread, Hot Tuna, Humble Pie, Canned Heat… Old bands really sound some some kinda nursing home lunch menu!
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:53pm andrewb:

actually hadn't heard Cat Stevens "morning has broken"in ever. had to figure out who played the piano. Rick Wakeman of course
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:54pm Zardoz:

YES CURTIS!
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:54pm Zardoz:

A terrible blow but that’s how it goes
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:54pm Gaylord Fields:

@Zardoz: If this show isn't "going off the rails," then what is?
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:55pm SeanG:

that bass
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:55pm Zardoz:

I’m just having fun Gaylord. You’re killin it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:55pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks, everyone! I'll do my usual orthodox unorthodox show next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:55pm Booz:

Thanks for the ride Gaylord & Bronwyn. You got me safely to the destination.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:55pm jillydg:

Irwin I was just grating some cheddar and I laughed to myself that I knew those things are called slots. Then I thought I should tell Gaylord but that would've been too inside for the playlist. Now that I see you're here tho...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/11/18 9:56pm JakeGould:

Thanks Gaylord!
  Sun. 11/11/18 9:56pm pp:
