"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

I met JA in the PM the other day. There was a faintly audible sound, possibly Rolnick, just within earshot, like the scent of sandalwood in a 4000 year old temple. You know, a typical Tuesday night.

Hey all! I just borrowed Sonic Youth GOO from the library and I get it now. It was really really dissonant to me in the 90's for some reason. Now I get it. What is Sonic Youths best first album to get? To give you an idea I do NOT LIKE early Butthole Surfers, I like the more accessible stuff like Electric Larry Land.
Avatar 10:33am
John Allen:

neil, go back one step- now is an appropriate time to pickup Daydream Nation
Avatar 10:37am
Diezel Tea:

Hell, Neil, take the plunge back to EVOL! Hello everyone, by the way.

good morning

Bobby:

EVOL or Sister!
Avatar 10:45am
Diezel Tea:

Damn we all missed out on the semantics joke we coulda made on you, Neil. Sonic Youth only had 1 first album, like almost every band, you only get 1 first album so their best one would be their first. I think I need to leave my office, now.
Avatar 10:50am
Wild Neil||Peace All:

Daydream Nation I think. !988 was a pivitol year from me. Dropped out of college and moved to NYC with no plan whatsoever. Weeeeeeeeeeee!
Avatar 10:53am

'70s show was great.
Avatar 10:54am

i am totally enchanted by EVOL for some reason. it feels more powerful than Sister and Daydream Nation.

Avatar 10:56am
zpulpa:

ooooof this feels right... looking forward to a quiet weekend of dazzling synths and walks in the park
Avatar 10:57am
Wild Neil||Peace All:

Evol seemed like something SST would put out (based only on my knowledge of Hüsker Du). 4AD would be another guess at who they would go with as a label. Daydream Nation for me for the accessibility then Evol for the raw product , so to speak. Thanks people!
Avatar 10:58am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

I must forfeit my cool-guy membership and be voted off the island by admitting no era of sonic youth ever did it for me, alas. Probably maxed-out my allowance of musical obsessions anyway.
Avatar 11:00am
sphere:

RTD, in order to stay cool you must renounce your membership at least once. So you're good. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am
tim from champaign:

@Wild Neil - as unhelpful as this may sound, I'd recommend using Goo as an anchor, then move backward and forward album by album. Here's my favorite SY records by decade: 80s - Evol. 90s - Dirty. 00s - Rather Ripped.
  11:01am
Bobby:

sphere: Perhaps it is the raw, snarling undercurrent. EVOL is my favorite SY record to reach for when it is dark
