HAY GUESS WAT?!

This is like my first time using the cassette decks here too, so, learning curve tonight as well with everything, OH WHAT FUN
  3:12am
Jaz-Paz:

Rough around the edges but kudos to any DJ who boldly opens with Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
Avatar 3:12am
Andrew S:

clean heads and a good deck and cassettes last. I have about 1k jazz cassettes from the 80s that i squirreled away for a few decades and ive been playing them the last few years and they sound great to my ears. They lasted longer thn i thought i would
Avatar 3:13am
Nick the Bard:

I'm used to doing all digital, but of course I figure it's like, ok, let's do this authentic tonight, so, yeh (it's all new buttons and stuff to press and toggle)
Avatar 3:15am
Nick the Bard:

I also brought my cd/cassette player as a backup in case things really start going screwy (yay more stuff to lug home too)
  3:20am
Jaz-Paz:

There's no cassette deck in the studio? I feel bad I've neglected my Tascam deck. You may have inspired me to get it hooked up and working this week.
Avatar 3:20am
Andrew S:

more rudimentary down there than one might think if you have to bring your own cassette player. donations now more than ever
Avatar 3:21am
Andrew S:

youd think a million bucks would get you a tape p,ayer, i see them at the sally anne every day
Avatar 3:21am
Nick the Bard:

There's two in here, but it's acting all weird, but THAT'S more because I'm not used to using these things and I kind of forgot to ask about how to deal with these things
Avatar 3:23am
Nick the Bard:

like, the first one is acting weird, the second one is going fine, so, yeh, we're going kind of obtuse tonight for a bit, maybe. Don't think we're THAT backwards techwise, it's more on me :P

can almost smell him
  3:28am
Jaz-Paz:

Nick, just go with it. Experimental tape collage. I love how I can hear the tape being chewed up over the air. Now THIS is what I remember about tapes especially ones you loved and listened to the most.

?:

cassettes my favorite medium!
Avatar 3:31am
Andrew S:

rememebre spinning them with your fingers and trying to untwine them
Avatar 3:31am
Andrew S:

putting a pencil in the spools
  3:34am
Jaz-Paz:

Poor man's rewind. Gotta conserve every drop of juice in the Walkman batteries.
Avatar 3:36am
Andrew S:

auto reverse was a revolution because actuakky taking the tape out manually was exhausting
Avatar 3:37am
Andrew S:

does anyone know what dolby menas? I know i can loik it up, being at a computer and all. but thats no fun. Dolby was a big thing whatever it was
  3:46am
Jaz-Paz:

Dolby was for noise reduction. I don't know the science but in my experience it was better left off on cheap units that supposedly supported it. It only sounded better to me if it was good quality tape on a decent deck. Otherwise it sounded awful. Like rolling off the entire top end.
Avatar 3:48am
Andrew S:

what about chromium dioxide? That was the actual tape right? Not the recording? I dont know shit abou this stuff. I just remember having suitcases full of metal tapes in the 80s
  3:49am
power turle:

wuuuaah this show is so eerie. its like i know all these songs from before i'd heard of music. it's like the early 90s culture industry lef6t a sleeper cell in my brain
Avatar 3:49am
Andrew S:

they tried to make them hard to steal at kmart by putting them in long plastic boxes but you just snapped the bottom of those and the tape slid out
Avatar 3:50am
Andrew S:

tapes weer indeed killing the industry like those stickers said, if you collected them the way we did
  3:50am
P-90:

“Kidz Klassiks”?
Avatar 3:53am
Andrew S:

a tape was a disposable piece of shit like a cd but it did the trick
  3:53am
P-90:

That analog needle-in-groove romanticism of the vinyl worshippers
Avatar 3:53am
Rob Gee:

"Home taping is killing music!"
Avatar 3:54am
Andrew S:

yeah thos stickers
Avatar 3:54am
Andrew S:

i think they had a skull and crossbones
  3:54am
Jaz-Paz:

The oxides are the secret sauce of blended metal that distinguished the different manufacturers and quality of tape. There's a very notable difference in cheap stuff and everything else.
  3:56am
P-90:

In my day we tried to stay with TDK. Than everyone tried Maxell for a while, then I think we pretty much went back to TDK...
Avatar 3:58am
Andrew S:

i reember both when taoing songs off th radio, you had to press play and record at the same time. But i didnt and dont know any dfiference between quality. i

P-90:

Now flashing back to the cassette stage of evolution of life on Earth... recovered memories of dipping the Q-tip in the solvent (alcohol?) and wiping the amber goo off the playback head... mmm, that smell...
Avatar 4:01am
Andrew S:

sony was to portable cassette players like iphones are now
Avatar 4:01am
Andrew S:

man i nrmemebr that. dip the q tip and scrape it around and it would pull all this black goo off the heads
Avatar 4:03am
Andrew S:

they came out with those yellow sportsman i think they were supposed to be water resistant, they were like carrying around a colostomy bag
Avatar 4:06am
Andrew S:

i had every banzai cassette in the 80s or nearly every one
Avatar 4:07am
Nick the Bard:

Best portable I had was an RCA that actually played the tapes at the correct speed no matter how low the batteries got, not sure what year it was from though (was using it around 2007/08 I know)
  4:07am
P-90:

In the eighties I dated a girl who wore a colostomy bag with a cassette player actually built in. OK, no I didn’t
Avatar 4:07am
Nick the Bard:

Growing up it was all about the Sounddesign stuff though
Avatar 4:11am
Andrew S:

i dont know what that means. I just remember having briefcases full of metal tapes
Avatar 4:11am
Nick the Bard:

Sounddesign was like a budget brand of stereo stuff, but it was actually pretty decent quality
  4:11am
P-90:

Sony had the Walkman Pro, like a Walkman at a whole different level of quality in the components and performance. Journalists used them for interviews and stuff and musicians liked them to record rough demos on the fly, the way they used portable DAT recorders later on.
  4:12am
P-90:

Expensive though. For a Walkman.
Avatar 4:14am
Andrew S:

jmoney was no object back then
Avatar 4:19am
Andrew S:

I remember i was about 12 or 13 and metallica were playing they were nobodys they were the opening band before wasp and armrored saint nd playing pretty much in a big basemant. but i had to se them so my mom had a job at a bingo hall and we went ad stole all the money out of her cashbox so we could go and some extra to buy hash and acid. Thats why I am where I am today

Avatar 4:26am
Andrew S:

this beats the hit out of heavy metal parking lot
Avatar 4:28am
Nick the Bard:

It's an actual tape put out to promote Can't Stop The Rock The Styrper Collection 1984-1991 (the tape itself is litterally called Limited Edition Words And Music"
Avatar 4:29am
Nick the Bard:

had to flip the tape, oops (using the player I brought, no window on the tape deck)
Avatar 4:31am
