Pat Novak, For Hire  Rita Malloy   from April 23, 1949  (none)  Pat Novak is the series that made Jack Webb into a cult figure, and which resulted in his getting the nod to be Sergeant Friday on Dragnet.

People loved the excessively snappy dialog, and the occasional head-scratchingly bizarre metaphors. Some samples from "Rita Malloy":

"...he looked like a well groomed laundry bag."

"He's a single celled animal, and this is just about big enough to fit into his brain."
