| Pat Novak, For Hire | Rita Malloy | from April 23, 1949 | (none) |
Pat Novak is the series that made Jack Webb into a cult figure, and which resulted in his getting the nod to be Sergeant Friday on Dragnet.
People loved the excessively snappy dialog, and the occasional head-scratchingly bizarre metaphors. Some samples from "Rita Malloy": "...he looked like a well groomed laundry bag." "He's a single celled animal, and this is just about big enough to fit into his brain." "Things were falling into place like a fixed roulette wheel." "You couldn't find a hangnail if you knew which hand it was on." "When she opened the door, I got a nice warm feeling like a melted cheese sandwich, and I was looking around for a rope to hang on." |
