Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

geezerette:
Smokey is a miracle. |
![]() |
![]() All these loverly little 45 4pm spinning things. |
![]() |
![]() He really is geez. THEE male voice of '60s Detroit soul if you ask me. |
![]() |
![]() @doc: yes they are, and are, and are! |
![]() |
![]() I used to see Smokey in the health food store, in Sherman Oaks, in the late 80s-early 90s |
![]() |
![]() or Los Feliz, can't remember which |
![]() |
![]() *rolls in like the tumbleweed I am* LD! Amigos! |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:22pm
Dean:
chresti, Did you know East Side Records in Los Feliz? Short-lived, but a great store.
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:23pm
geezerette:
Wow, Amofen! Chresti, that's amazing! I saw Mr. Blackwell at a Dick Blick in Hollywood once. Not nearly as exciting. |
![]() |
![]() one thousand tumbleweed GIFs for you NGH! |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:24pm
still b/p:
This is like private eye movie soundtrack from late 60s. |
![]() |
![]() I remember...platypus, on Hollywood, and a store across from LA City College |
![]() |
![]() This may sound obvious but you don't wanna be surprised by a tumbleweed. I was running on a desert trail one day when the wind shifted and was flattened cartoon-style from behind. |
![]() |
![]() Also they're spine-filled, spiteful things |
![]() |
![]() My ex's parents and friends knew Mr. Blackwell |
![]() |
![]() Aaron's records, was often visited...on Melrose |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:30pm
Dean:
Oh, yeah, Platypus! Totally forgot about that place. Anyway, East Side was largely an outlet for a classical music distributor, Harmonia Mundi. One weekend I purchased 50 CDs at once, all substantially discounted. Oh, hell, yeah, Aaron's! One of the best.
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:30pm
geezerette:
How funny! He was very annoyed when the clerks didn't know who he was. The words, "Mr. Blackwell" were spelled on the back of his jacket in rhinestones. |
![]() |
![]() oh my! LD! |
![]() |
![]() You just Coltraned my feels! |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:33pm
geezerette:
Almost cried when Aaron's closed. Coltrane, ahhhhh...:D |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:34pm
Dean:
Same here. Same for the original Moby Disc in Van Nuys. What a store.
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:37pm
geezerette:
Moby Disc, haven't heard that mentioned in lifetimes. ?There's a possibility that Amoeba in Hollywood will close. Sigh. |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:37pm
still b/p:
Hah! Blackwell on the best-stressed list. |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:38pm
geezerette:
Ha ha! |
![]() |
![]() chresti: You knew Ed Blackwell????!!!!! *fawns* (hero musician of mine). |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:39pm
geezerette:
Still miss Tower. |
![]() |
![]() cool cool cool! |
![]() |
![]() 3 hours earlier here |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:41pm
Dean:
Wha?! Amoeba Hollywood opened the year after I left LA, naturally (as did Al's Bar). The one here in Berkeley has downsized considerably over the years. Moby Disc c.'75 was the joint for progressive rock. My buddies and I would spend weekend days traversing LA County to go there from the east end.
![]() |
![]() I used to go to Rhino in westwood a lot |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:42pm
Dean:
Yeah, me, too. I believe there is still a Rhino in Claremont, independent of the original store?
![]() |
![]() Pooh Bah in Pasadena |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:43pm
geezerette:
There's a Rhino in Claremont. That's not exactly close! |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:43pm
geezerette:
Oh,Dean , you just said that! |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:44pm
Dean:
Heh, Pooh Bah, the old Pooh Bah. Once I entered the store on Walnut and the guy at the register--long hair, Bermuda shorts--announced, "Here comes the guy who pays my salary." I had a bad habit of going there frequently.
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:45pm
geezerette:
That's a GOOD habit! |
![]() |
![]() nowadays, I shop at Amoeba in SF when up there-much easier because we can walk there |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:47pm
Dean:
When one is relatively independent and free of financial obligations, it can be a good habit. I used to hang out at high-end stereo stores, too, but not so much anymore. The financial risks are palpable.
![]() |
![]() You must of bought a lot of records! |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:50pm
Dean:
I did, and I do. My kids only occasionally starve. (I have CDs still sealed from that East Side Records splurge, which was...mid-'90s?)
![]() |
![]() h’lo |
![]() |
![]() Poo Bah's and Rhino were reliable sources of Jamaican, R&B, Poo Bah had much Doo Wop, and WEIRD stuff |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:53pm
Dean:
And Zed in Long Beach, owned I believe by the founders of Island Records...or some close relationship? The Zampelli brothers?
![]() |
![]() oh and African...Barton's on my way home from work when I worked at Hollywood Park (rip) |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:55pm
Dean:
Poo Bah had classical, jazz, rock...the gamut. I remember eyeing the Tapscott LPs, several volumes, and wondering whether I should go for them. I didn't, and I regret the choice.
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:56pm
geezerette:
Independent stores like that are fun and the counter people know so much. I miss that, but always searching. Still find gems occasionally. |
![]() |
![]() GODDAMMIT |
![]() |
![]() STREAMING PC YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE |
![]() |
![]() the rhino where i live has a fairly pathetic "out jazz" selection, and an almost non-existent asian music selection. the usual reggae...etc. there's a slightly better record store in town, though not by much. this is all good news, as i can't afford to buy now anyway. |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:58pm
Dean:
Chicago's Jazz Record Mart died a few years ago. I miss it. Only made it there a couple times.
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:58pm
geezerette:
Danny, I think you studio needs an exorcist! |
![]() |
![]() I die silently while my PC installs updates |
![]() |
![]() This must be the stream-solo piano.... |
![]() |
![]() yeh doesn't sound like new cha - or any other cha for that matter |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 10:58pm
geezerette:
...your... |
![]() |
![]() It's pathological at this point |
![]() |
![]() oh god, I almost forgot...Peaches, in Hollywood |
![]() |
![]() I think I spent thirty years of spending money on music. It kept me from getting ahead, and you can say that was bad. On the other hand, now, I’m disabled, poor, and can’t get ahead anymore: but I have 10,000+ records, and mostly I’m satisfied. |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:00pm
geezerette:
Un bidden auto updates are wrecking my Mac too. Really a problem. |
![]() |
![]() Horace Tapscott LP's-not much Tapscott available when I've searched, that's sad to hear... |
![]() |
![]() i have my one laptop set for "never update" and the other for "prompt me before installing updates" |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:00pm
Dean:
Licorice Pizza on Sunset, across from the Whisky. Used to hang out there in the late '70s, the punk "era." Chris Ashford, who produced the first Germs single, worked there. Was a hoot.
![]() |
![]() Hey everybody. So sorry about this. So much swearing here. So the reason this happens is because the ONLY time I open my streaming PC is an hour before this show. So then the week of updates and smouldering resentment that my PC harbors gets to express itself. |
![]() |
![]() The Rhino in Clairmont was pretty watered down compared to it's mothership |
![]() |
![]() The thing is. I can turn the updates off. I just forget EVERY SINGLE WEEK. |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:01pm
Dean:
I think I mentioned this on another comment board: I loathe the internet. Vint Cerf, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, all those other jerkoffs, get an F in my class.
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:02pm
geezerette:
Licorice Pizza! |
![]() |
![]() I'll light a stick of smudge... |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:02pm
Dean:
And Douglas Engelbart, the inventor of the mouse, Steve Jobs, naturally...I despise these (now former, thankfully) people.
![]() |
![]() Man, I mostly love the internet. For one thing, that’s where I get my WFMU |
![]() |
![]() ah! What about when it happens on other shows? |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:04pm
Dean:
WFMU: an exception that proves the rule.
![]() |
![]() same here, Hail internet! |
![]() |
![]() please refer to 11:03, Danny |
![]() |
![]() it's not the internet itself that is abominable, it's that it's in the hands of humans (and human-programmed robots) snow leopard showed that a computer can be compatible with life to a fairly high degree, but that scum steve jobs saw that they weren't going to rule the world that way. so that was the end of that. |
![]() |
![]() Danny i know this is the stream but i gotta say this jazz is killer! |
![]() |
![]() I’m grooving |
![]() |
![]() it started ducking out at the end of Doug's show |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:11pm
Dean:
Guns don't kill, people do. Well, yes, people do the killing...with guns. To my mind there is no "internet itself." And I agree that whatever the stream is spilling out just now is terrific. Not David Ware, Brotzmann...who is it?
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:12pm
geezerette:
I've turned off auto updates but they happen anyway! Coel, agree! |
![]() |
![]() Vandermark? |
![]() |
![]() me too! |
![]() |
![]() no not David. probably not Peter... |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:13pm
Dean:
Good guess, Scraps. | |
![]() |
![]() ...no not Peter. |
![]() |
![]() It just rebooted and then restarted with the updates at 0% I DIE |
![]() |
![]() but it must be frustrating for dj |
![]() |
![]() jeez! |
![]() |
![]() very limited knowledge of Vandermark. |
![]() |
![]() ugh chresti I'm like the most patient person on earth but this is so trying |
![]() |
![]() I'ma hafta cap the show if this persists for much longer. |
![]() |
![]() and I will want to go back and listen to your playlist |
![]() |
![]() what if you forced it off; reboot then turned off updates before they start again? |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:17pm
geezerette:
Danny, I'm so sorry man. |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:17pm
Dean:
Yep, that's how Windows updates. Downloads all the crap, then after a restart installs it. Vandermark, like Braxton--have you looked recently at braxtonhouse?!--is so prolific that it's hard to gain expansive knowledge of his output.
![]() |
![]() oh neat it's at 1% It doesn't work coel, alas. I've tried that before. I can start in safe mode but networking and audio capabilities get tricky |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:18pm
still b/p:
Dear computer, you are, ..."A knave; a rascal; an eater of broken meats; a base, proud, shallow, beggarly, three-suited, hundred-pound, filthy, worsted-stocking knave; a lily-livered, action-taking knave, a whoreson, glass-gazing, super-serviceable finical rogue; one-trunk-inheriting slave; one that wouldst be a bawd, in way of good service, and art nothing but the composition of a knave, beggar, coward, pandar, and the son and heir of a mongrel bitch: one whom I will beat into clamorous whining, if thou deniest the least syllable of thy addition." |
![]() |
![]() thanks all for yer general support! |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:19pm
Dean:
Computers don't deserve Shakespeare, even as an insult.
![]() |
![]() Even though it's at 2% now I'm pulling the plug after this Art Blakey THAT NO ONE BUT ME CAN FUCKING HEAR RIGHT NOW. It's just too crazy-making. Sorry my people |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:21pm
Dean:
Moore's Law. Moore should go fuck himself.
![]() |
![]() Really sorry Danny. |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:22pm
geezerette:
Nevertheless, that was a lovely word cascade,S B /P. |
![]() |
![]() Haha, Dean. Bring the pain my dude. |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:23pm
Dean:
This is a longstanding grudge on my part. I resent these guys.
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:25pm
geezerette:
Danny, we'll listen on archive. We feel your pain. |
![]() |
![]() While I have you. Do y'all notice my longer music sets? They routinely climb into 35-40 minute territory these days. It feels indulgent. |
![]() |
![]() Sticking around for a bit over here. |
![]() |
![]() see you soon! thanks |
![]() |
![]() @geez: there won't be an archive most likely! Unless Audacity does some sort of auto-save. I'll ask Doug, though. I seem to remember there being a sort of lesser-fidelity backup that the station is continuously recording from the stream. |
![]() |
![]() I sent an e-mail to stream team-albeit too late! |
![]() |
![]() By the way, I'm 95% certain that I'll be focusing on Latin jazz 45s for my singles-going-steady show. It's a party. |
![]() |
![]() Alright everybody. Thank you again! Exorcising the ghosts in Le Machine over the coming week. Squeaky clean tech next show! |
![]() |
![]() Danny Thanks for trying and good luck. |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:35pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):
Hey Danny, your playlist had been "finished". I clicked the thingy to change it back to live. |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:38pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):
@Dean 11:02: Douglas Engelbart's mouse had five buttons which you would "chord" by pressing in various simultaneous combinations. Far more sophisticated than what the Apple introduced later with its overly simplistic single button. See also: www.theonion.com... |
![]() |
![]() ...you probably know more about these things than i, but if you can change it to "prompt before updating" (or whatever) then you can postpone the update 'till after the show; then download updates immediately following the show, turn off computer then back on again at some point before your next show to let them install. ...? just an idea from a novice. anyway i hope you get some sleep tonight tchau |
![]() |
![]() Kenzo Danny had to abort. |
![]() |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:41pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):
Oh so this is actually over? I'd gotten a listener report about playlist out of sync but I see, I see. Refinishing! |
![]() |
![]() sad but true. |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:44pm

That was me-Sent too late

Oh no! Not glow! | |
Thu. 10/11/18 11:53pm
