::adjusts toque, settles in with bag of TimBits::
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 11:46am Tony Coulter:

Ha! Hey, James!

Had to look "toque" up, and I'm a quarter Canadian. (French Canadian, though, so that's my excuse.)
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 11:47am Tony Coulter:

Although: I guess "toque" *is* a French word so ... I have no excuse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 11:58am listener james from westwood:

I heard the word years before I saw it written, so I figured it was spelled the same way as Pippin Took's surname. But this was when I played a lot of D&D and thus had hobbits on the brain.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Hobbits on the brain. Sounds serious. Hope you had a doctor take a look at that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

He said it explained the Ring-ing in my ears.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! Good one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 12:02pm Yvang:

Excuse me, but hello everyone!
  Tue. 10/2/18 12:03pm Psychspaniolos:

Hello Tony and all
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Yvang!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:03pm βrian:

Holy phoque, he's wearing a toque!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:03pm Sem:

Hello and good afternoon, Tony, and all.

Canadian content, pretty early in the day for that sort of thing, eh?
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:04pm Sem:

Anglo-Canadians, a nice distinction, that.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:04pm βrian:

Which is, I guess, a seal of approval ...
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:04pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Psychspaniolos, βrian, and Sem!!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

During the '70s, I spent most summers in Vancouver, B.C. Because of Canadian radio's Canadian content laws (a certain percent of Canadian artists had to be played each hour), I heard *a lot* of Guess Who.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Nucleus (*not* the U.K. band) later turned into A Foot in Coldwater.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:14pm Sem:

It was the rough with the smooth for most of the 70s when I worked in private radio, with respect to mandated 33.3% CanCon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 12:17pm Michael 98145:

very few folks in Europe know what a seattle might be, but they all know Vancouver.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Michael!

I live a 20-minute ride away from Vancouver ... Washington.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:20pm βrian:

When I was a kid I figured the two Vancouvers were adjacent, on opposite sides of the border.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 12:21pm Michael 98145:

been in Seattle most of my life. used to enjoy attacks by DOA and Pointed Sticks back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 12:24pm Michael 98145:

ciao for now -
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

See ya!
  Tue. 10/2/18 12:29pm Psychspaniolos:

Great band
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:37pm Sem:

Ran into Skip Prokop, post-Paupers, post-Lighthouse at a pub in my hometown, promoting a new vocalist for a band he was promoting at the time. Great stories.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:37pm Phillippe Bastille:

  Tue. 10/2/18 12:38pm Psychspaniolos:

Another very beautiful band
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:38pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Phillippe!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

This Folklords track has a slight Velvet Underground sound -- wonder if there was an influence. Probably not.
  Tue. 10/2/18 12:44pm Dean:

Symphonic Slam, Symphonic Slam, Symphonic Slam!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, Dean!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:45pm Sem:

OH, good to hear Fraser and DeBolt here!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, Bill Bissett did choose to spell "the" as "th."
Tue. 10/2/18 12:57pm Mark in Toronto:

Just heard Todd mention this show in the archives, so I had to tune in. Represent!
Tue. 10/2/18 12:59pm Mark in Toronto:

You can't have too much panning from channel to channel.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark! Glad Toronto's in the house!
Tue. 10/2/18 1:02pm Mark in Toronto:

There's a band called Morse Code Transmission you might be interested in. Also I hope you'll play some Syrinx.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:03pm Tony Coulter:

I will be playing Syrinx today! And Morse Code next week.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:03pm Tony Coulter:

Intersystems (on now) is pre-Syrinx
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:09pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony and all
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, coelacanth∅!
Tue. 10/2/18 1:13pm Mark in Toronto:

I have a flexi from NSB that came with an arts magazine in 1967. They were our ___? Early Frank Zappa? Beefheart?
  Tue. 10/2/18 1:14pm Dean:

NSB is remarkable. So happy I heard them live at Victo in the late '90s.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

I saw them around then too -- at the Knitting Factory. And I'm happy too!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark in Toronto: Not sure what the U.S. equivalent would be: maybe the Godz?

That flexi must be rare as anything!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:22pm coelacanth∅:

i saw some bands that sounded much like that nsb in the early 80s. often 4 bands/night and i remember the details of very few of them. but likely most of them didn't go far enough to even end up getting played on fmu 30-40 years later.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

Not too many outfits sounded anything like NSB is the '60s, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 1:25pm Michael 98145:

this IS the castle of musical rediscovery ... ♫
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:26pm Tony Coulter:

So they get extra points for that.
  Tue. 10/2/18 1:27pm Dean:

Here's that NSB flexi-disk: https://www.discogs.com/The-Nihilist-Spasm-Band-John-Chambers-Art-Southwest-Ont-ArtsCanada-August-September-1967/release/637935
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:31pm coelacanth∅:

Tony - for sure. they did not sound like the 60s. (and this keeping in mind the velvet underground)
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:33pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Just added that flexi to my discogs wantlist (ha! fat chance)
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

HEY! Zero pledges so far today. How about a pledge for Canada? The station and stream need your help!! (It is silent marathon month, you know.)
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

Silent marathon month means I won't be asking for pledges on mic, but instead will use remote mind control to try to get you to pledge. Guess I may have to go back to warlocks' school.
  Tue. 10/2/18 1:55pm Dean:

Yeah, well, remote mind control works.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

WOW! Big thanks for the super-generous pledge, Dean!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

Umm -- something's wacky with the pledge total. I'm not really at 50% -- far from it. Can't seem to adjust the goal, though. BUT ... mega-thanks to Dean -- let him be a shining example to all
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:04pm Dean:

So the $800,000 I pledged isn't even half?
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:04pm Dean:

FWIW, when I pledged on Jeff Golick's show on Sunday a.m., the show promptly reached its goal. Seemed curious to me.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

'Fraid not -- I'm going for a cool billion.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:05pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: yeah, something is definitely screwy. Will have to alert the higher-ups.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 2:16pm Michael 98145:

remember, all pledgers get their heart on. again.
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:18pm Dean:

I do a regular monthly contribution to Tony's show, too.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:22pm coelacanth∅:

i'd like to have a heart on. my plan is to win the lottery, but if that doesn't happen soon i wont have a heart on again 'till february-march.
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:24pm Psychspaniolos:

This is a great song
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks so much for that too, Dean! And thanks for the thought, coelacanth∅!

Meanwhile, everyone else, don't let pledge-total issues dissuade you from pledging -- pledges are coming through loud and clear and will be mucho, much appreciated.
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:25pm melinda:

Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:26pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Melinda!
Tue. 10/2/18 2:26pm Mark in Toronto:

Tony, Edgar Breau of Simply Saucer still plays around, I saw the band at a local bar about a month ago, and purchased a newly recorded single. Also i do enjoy looking at Discogs to see how much something I own (that I bought for next to nothing) is worth!
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

YAY!! Big thanks to Psychspaniolos for his generous pledge! Much appreciated!
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:29pm Psychspaniolos:

:) Thanks Tony
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:32pm coelacanth∅:

so, Tony if my calculation is correct your show's up to $700,000,000.00.
-could you lend me some money?
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

Sure -- if I reach my goal, it's free virtual cookies for all.
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:35pm Psychspaniolos:

Another great band tonight
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

There are great live clips from Papa Bear's Medicine Show, Mock Duck, and the Collectors on youtube -- worth searching out.
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

They're all from a Canadian television show I'm forgetting the name of.
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:45pm melinda:

Nice tunes
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

Ah, it was called "Let's Go!" Here's a Papa Bear clip: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Melinda!
Tue. 10/2/18 2:46pm Mark in Toronto:

Show was called Where It's At (?)
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:48pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: Oh, yeah -- think you're right. Maybe there are clips by those bands I mentioned from both shows.
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:50pm Psychspaniolos:

Gypsy People 1969...the one before
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:50pm Tony Coulter:

HEY! How about a last-minute pledge, so this show can reach its extremely modest goal. Would be very much appreciated (and needed)
Avatar Tue. 10/2/18 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Psychspaniolos! Fixed!
  Tue. 10/2/18 2:53pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/2/18 2:56pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, and looking forward to the full October blast from the Frozen North!

Thanks a lot Tony...wonderful show tonight
