Raining in Buffalo today. VERY humid in the lab, 72%/ Yuk, sticky and kind of lukewarm and confusing. Like a Nickelback concert! (reference: bigfoot ads on tv. heh!).
David S. Ware reminds me of AMAZING Coltrane or other saxaphone greats. Wow!

so great to hear jazz again on WFMU. great job scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 10:36am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Toronto has a "world class" jazz station but I gave up listening to it because there is SO MUCH shitty jazz out there. It got really annoying, yuk. FMU consistently plays far far better jazz.

i'll be listening in the car for a while Scott THANKS!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 10:48am northguineahills:

The NPR station's jazz show here is usually 90% smooth jazz crap, but occasionally they'll play Coltrane or Pharoah....

@NGH-it's like country music. There is some good stuff out there, but you must seek it out. Its like fusion...most of it is crap.

No stopping DISK ROT it comes for all of us. : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:10am Rich in Washington:

I wished i had of named my late 80s band DISK ROT. It would've been really prophetic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:12am Rich in Washington:

I have a few really early CD purchases that are now starting to become unplayable. And I take really, really good care of my CDs. A couple of them are early Shimmy Disc CD releases. Hmmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:14am Scott McDowell:

CD-Rs man, CDs generally OK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:14am crateslinger:

Strange that the degradation is audible like that instead of being just a general depletion in digital data leading to a collapse in functionality. After all it is not a mechanical thing, like a tape or an lp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:15am Wild Neil||Peace All:

All my CDs are stored vertically. Some skip. I was told in the 80's they would "last forever". Guess not!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:15am Scott McDowell:

DISK ROT is REAL
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:15am Dean:

PDO, a British CD manufacturer, produced a huge number of CDs during the late '80s to early '90s that gradually burned to toast. They remedied the situation in two ways. First, they adjusted their production specs to avoid the issue. Second, they replaced free of charge any affected CDs. I must have replaced about fifty of them through the '90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:16am crateslinger:

of course I don't know how anything works, so whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:16am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Dean-are they still honoring that deal??
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:18am Dean:

Good question, @WildNeil. If you can find PDO (if they still exist), it's worth a try. But you'll have to identify them as the manufacturer of the disks. I was buying heavily in a number of classical labels for whom they produced disks (Hyperion, Pearl, ASV, etc.), so it was relatively easy to find the bronzing items.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:19am Dean:

Usually, "PDO" appeared on the inner ring, what in vinyl parlance we'd call the "run out."
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:20am Dan Bodah:

Loved that East of the Valley Blues piece Scott
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:24am mjgoins:

This low song is the best
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:24am Chris from DC:

Really need to hear more of that Olson/Case/Hardiman.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:27am Listener Gregory:

I am finding some CDs that will not play in my player but can be read by my computer. Presumably, they are in the process of degrading, and I have to digitize them ASAP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:28am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Like a dummy, I gave away 350 albums in 1994. Duh! Because they "were hard to move from apartment to apartment". Boy, I am the KING of bad decisions!
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:28am Ed Zeppole:

I saw Low last week at two of their shows @ National Sawdust and as usual, they were phenominal. The new tunes had a more minimal feel live and they played a number of great tunes from the past. National Sawdust is an amazing venue by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:31am βrian:

Thanks for the excellent show, Scott. Gotta run.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:33am Carmichael:

Heya Scott and folks. Finally, a plain white homepage! I can't look at some of the others (hear that, Warwick?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:33am Rich in Washington:

@Wild Neil||Peace All: Don't feel bad. I've done that both with large chunks of both my CD and record collection at a couple of points in my life. I sometimes agonize over how many records I would have now if not for the two or three purges I've done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:33am crateslinger:

If you type in some computer code wrong by one character, you don't get a program that just runs sorta - you get nothing. It simply doesn't work. Well sometimes it runs glitchy, but mostly it just fails altogether. So if a digital compact disk format is deteriorating, some of the data is gone - whether audio or some other type of data. How does that fail to translate as a broken sequence. Anybody?
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:34am Listener Gregory:

I am right now digitizing my favorite CD-R: Larks They Crazy, by Robin Holcomb, based on this scary conversation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:35am Rich in Washington:

I think the last time I did it in around 2003/4 was 'I can find ANYTHING on the web! Who needs CDs?'.
And local used stores still had a really good exchange rate for CDs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:35am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Crateslinger-well, they run in parallel, not serially so it gracefully degrades!
Just kidding, no idea whatsofing ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:35am crateslinger:

A deteriorated CD should not play at all. There's a lot of smart people in here. Somebody should be able to explain this to a dumbie like me. Or are we all artists?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:36am crateslinger:

You had me for a second Neil... parallel. Good one!
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:36am Listener Gregory:

@crateslinger, I think CD players have different error correction procedures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:37am Rich in Washington:

I don't know why but I have found that is the case, that a CD that won't play on a CD player can often be read by a computer's optical drive. I have backed up many a questionable CD/CDR that way.
I too would like to know why, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:37am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Updating ISO documents.
"Get all excited and going to a yawn festival!"
-Steve Martin, "A Wild and Funny Guy".
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:37am mjgoins:

I thought when a CD degrades, it just doesn't play sound at all, though?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:37am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Mine skip like a MF. Some tracks still work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:37am crateslinger:

Lis Greg - but if the data is simply not there... the player makes it up? Like a session man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:38am steveo:

this is monk, right?
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:39am hendrix wolfbat:

Are you sure we'll be able to turn on the lights if Facebook is gone?
Avatar Wed. 9/26/18 11:39am Barney Grubbs:

More likely the coating degrades and scatters the laser that is reading the data, so the data are still there but the read-out is being interfered with to various degrees depending on the local degradation level?
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:39am mjgoins:

CDs are purely digital with respect to how they store information. They store a literal series of ones and zeroes, using a special encoding that contains error correction. That stream of data then is translated into another stream of ones and zeros that make up bytes or words, which I think are 16 bits long, representing sound samples at 44.1khz

So if the "outer" digital encoding degrades, the error correction should just fail, and the bad samples should just get skipped.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:39am hendrix wolfbat:

Ie: no Facebook? No electricity
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:40am Rich in Washington:

I understand that the plastic component of CDs can be the unstable element. I used to work in plastics and there are all kinds of things that can go wrong in their formulation to make plastics start to degrade.
I guess. I don't know. I DO know that one of my aforementioned Shimmy releases has what looks like holes in the foil component. I have no idea how that can happen. The plastic is otherwise unmarked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:40am crateslinger:

it would be funny if some of the missing music was replaced by the player. They could take things in different directions. We could be like, "Whoa man, that was deep." Really old cd's would just be free jazz improv different everyday.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:40am Listener Gregory:

The data don't all disappear at once. It's a continuous process, like fading a book cover in the sun. When it starts, some readers might be lost, but others can fill in the few missing points. NB: All CDs have some missing data, because manufacturing is not prefect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:40am Scott McDowell:

Yes
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:41am mjgoins:

I suppose if the CD player is doing its best to play each valid sample, but skips each bad sample, in real time, you would get white noise playing over your music.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:41am Listener Gregory:

I have a Peter Brotzmann CD that looks like it has fungus, but it's not on the surface. I've lost about half of the music. Total bummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:42am crateslinger:

This is a future genre. Multiple depleted cd's playing at once. Preferable with accompanied by a laser light show in the planetarium.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:42am Listener Gregory:

@mjgoins, For short intervals the player might guess what sound should be there, which is often somewhat predictable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:42am Scott McDowell:

@hendrix wolfbat, yes to no electricity! poof gone. : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:43am crateslinger:

I haven't played a cd or cdr in ten years. I should dig them out and see what kind of historical documents I have created.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:44am crateslinger:

Never took them seriously.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:44am Listener Gregory:

To be clear, I do not actually know what I am talking about.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:44am hendrix wolfbat:

@Scott Mcdowell well no electricity would also mean no WFMU, which would leave an enormous grand canyon sized hole in my life at this point.
Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:44am destructo:

nothing to do but hire an army of people to rip all my CDs and etch the ones and zeroes into stone tablets, to be buried with me in my sarcophagus
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:47am Joel St. Germain:

Perfect weekday morning show for me. Awesome having you back on the air, Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:47am steveo:

@hendrx we could all move to jersey city and gather around as djs played records with hand crank victrolas
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:49am crateslinger:

I remember when WFMU was one of the only reasons I had to remain in NYC. Can somebody remind me why I'm still here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:50am steveo:

it's where the crates need slinging?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:51am crateslinger:

haha. Yeah I guess so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:52am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Let's all get real sentimental about CDs like we did about albums in the 90's. Except albums might actually last longer! NOW I see why the national archives store music on 78's!
@Crateslinger-you are there because you can find almost any art form or music you want. Certainly NOT because it's a bargain!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:52am northguineahills:

@crateslinger: I left NYC, and I'm listening to WFMU....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:53am northguineahills:

I had someone last night like my WFMU shirt. She then downloaded the app....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:54am crateslinger:

Neill I'm in bed by 8:30 every night.

NGH - exactly my point...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:54am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I LIKE owning 0.49 acres of lawn I have to mow every thursday when its warm enough for grass to grow. It is my tiny kingdom of malfunctioning plumbing, electrical, roofing and windows and doors. It's the most valuable thing I don't own yet.
  Wed. 9/26/18 11:56am hendrix wolfbat:

@Steveo ok sounds good. I'll bring the marshmallows...lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:57am crateslinger:

Five years ago, when I moved out of my apartment of 18 years, the last thing I removed was a wire antenna strung around the place, painted over like four times, that I had to install when I first moved in so I could pick up WFMU. It's actually hard to get the terrestrial signal in Brooklyn unless you're in a car. Manhattan is a huge pile of RF interference between me and my beloved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:58am northguineahills:

Thanks Scott, awesome vibes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:58am crateslinger:

This is an awesome show by the way. I gotta go build some boxes. Thanks Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:58am northguineahills:

@crateslinger: I was streaming WFMU in the 90s before I moved to NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 11:59am crateslinger:

NGH - I started streaming then too but before that it was a struggle. Bye Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 12:00pm doncaballero:

Thanks Scott! Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/26/18 12:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:
