Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from September 7, 2018 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Dean, Bobby Black earned his legend status by both being the Commander Cody steel man during their heyday, and then playing on the cool, but way out, Asleep at the Wheel album "Framed." "Betcha By-Golly, Wow"...a song about gambling?

I've been to Las Vegas precisely once in '76 to hear Yes and Donovan at the Alladin. I was not old enough to gamble, but I ran through the (old, pre-fire) MGM Hotel casino dropping nickels in slot machines, and I netted five bucks. I will never return to Vegas. They'll never get it back.

Single Vegas experience was a late night arrival to drop off a couple party members after coming out of a Grand Canyon hike. A couple hours on the strip, then slept in a van in Frontier parking lot until lot-cleaning machines woke us up pre-dawn. What a town!

The Queen of Diamonds mentioned by Robert Hunter in "Loser" may also be a direct reference to Garcia himself. In a very old divination system based on the standard 52-card deck, August 1 - Jerry's birthday - is symbolized by the Queen of Diamonds.

Yeah, I'm always on shaky ground if I get into what Hunter *means*. It's as flexible as the Bible or Shakespeare.

Quebec had some interesting prog rock groups like Mashmakhan, Harmonium and Beau Dommage. It's a shame that neither one of them had an impact on the US charts.
