Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 3:04pm Alison Porchnik:

I'm confused. What does the hook have to do with the sledgehammer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 3:06pm Jeff Moore:

Are they all just construction-y industrial-y things?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 3:06pm Alison Porchnik:

Translation: “Do not leave anything loose on the scaffold”
Ok, I guess the hook isn't relevant here. Total red herring. As it were.

Thanks to Jon Z for the promotional poster.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 3:41pm The Oscar:

Whenever someone starts the Cthulhu pronunciation debate, I helpfully remind them that it is a nonsense word made up by a crazy person.

Robert Walter reminds me of Frank Zappa in noodling mode.
Apparently, it has roots in chthonic which means underground dweller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 3:44pm Irwin:

The bass reminds me of Richard Sinclair of Caravan and Hatfield & the North.

Wanted to sign in so I could click on Tom Abbs & Frequency Response. They are new to me, but right up my alley.

What was the name of that European Sun Ra inspired group you were playing a lot of about a year ago, Irwin? I feel certain you can remember. Unfortunately I don't. Don't think I clicked them either.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 4:11pm Alison Porchnik:

Is this track inspired by the weekend's sojourn to Hartsdale?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 4:13pm Irwin:

Not really, just like the song. But maybe subconsciously ....

Mitch Mitchell! Supposedly Hendrix called him "my Elvin Jones."
  Wed. 9/5/18 4:29pm Santos L Halper:

What Irwin said. Jazz-rock forever!
And thanks for reminding me of that box set, time to revisit...
  Wed. 9/5/18 4:30pm Woo:

Yesterday I heard Mercy Mercy Mercy by the Buckinghams on the radio. Is that jazz pop? I think so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 4:31pm Irwin:

Mitch Mitchell was influenced by Elvin Jones. Great chops AND showmanship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:31pm Linda Lee:

isn't this Pure Mids track lovely! a fine cap to a stressful afternoon. thanks Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 4:32pm Irwin:

Mercyx3 was a Cannonball Adderley number, but the Bucks kinda rockified it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:32pm coelacanth∅:

Karlward i never heard that. very cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:33pm karlward:

coelacanth∅: I can't remember the source of that quote but I'll try to dig it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:38pm coelacanth∅:

i've often said that Mitch was Jimi's drummer counterpart. aside from just being an outstanding drummer, i don't think it's possible that a more suitable drummer could've been chosen to compliment Jimi. i think Jimi realised this -if not before, then certainly after his stint with the clumsy, lacking of finesse and intuition and somewhat egocentric Buddy Miles.
  Wed. 9/5/18 4:39pm andrew:

Ooo NRPS
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:39pm coelacanth∅:

...Mitch understood perfectly what would work best for Jimi's music - possibly better than Jimi did at times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:40pm coelacanth∅:

i forgot about this one. good to hear it
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 4:40pm Franco Twinkie:

NR never surpassed this record. Every band has it's moment, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:41pm Carmichael:

This is one of my old NRPS favorites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 4:41pm Irwin:

Coel: I'm 100% with you on Buddy Miles. Clumsy to the core, played like he was wearing oven mitts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:42pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha!
  Wed. 9/5/18 4:42pm hendrix wolfbat:

Seriously great show Irwin! Thanks for the cool tunes:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:43pm Linda Lee:

let's not forget the Dirty Mac ~ one-off supergroup featuring John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards & Mitch Mitchell on the 'Rock n Roll Circus' Stones special for British tv! nice solid rhythm work there, where it only had to be nice & solid.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 4:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Mitch managed to play in front of the beat, behind the beat, outside the beat and always find his way back to the beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 4:45pm Irwin:

No better demonstrated than on 3rd Stone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:46pm coelacanth∅:

yeh Franco. he played texture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:46pm Linda Lee:

Miles said that good musicianship was about knowing when *not* to play, too. have to agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:46pm coelacanth∅:

"admirable restraint"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:46pm Linda Lee:

right ~
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:48pm coelacanth∅:

so Linda - i don't know how, but i've yet to hear that rock n roll circus stuff. i should do that before i die.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 4:50pm chris:

effusive gushing: your show, Irwin. i'm consistently amazed at what you put together for us. you're a treasure of a DJ, sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:52pm Linda Lee:

what happens when there's no restraint: youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:52pm Linda Lee:

coel, the footage was hard to see for a long time. easy now.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 4:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Some people like a tick-tock drumbeat and it rubs them the wrong way to hear poly-rhythms, They mistake it for sloppiness. Asymmetrie in all things, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:54pm Linda Lee:

there's the art. right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:55pm Linda Lee:

knowing what to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:56pm coelacanth∅:

Linda haha i can't stop laughing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:56pm Linda Lee:

downtown nyc late 70s early 80s was a wonderful place to be, despite what you've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 4:57pm Linda Lee:

see? :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 4:57pm Irwin:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 5:01pm Irwin:

jess: But what about Shania?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:01pm coelacanth∅:

so, regarding Linda @4.46 i was hoping someone would recognise my king crimson reference. (& maybe someone did) but it's this: on a track on "starless and bible black" Bill Bruford got a composition credit for an improvised instrumental piece played live because he knew enough to not touch his kit for the entire track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:02pm coelacanth∅:

(his instrumental credit was called "admirable restraint")
  Wed. 9/5/18 5:02pm jess:

I'll let the Shania slide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:03pm Linda Lee:

of course i missed it. thanks for the educatin! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:04pm Linda Lee:

Wed. 9/5/18 5:05pm judy from croton:

This one has me choked up already. Love a waltz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:11pm coelacanth∅:

LL i'm not in a good position to be an educator! i just like the story. i'm sure it was Robert Fripp's decision. he could've just left Bill's name off; so for people who think poorly of Fripp, personally, at least there's that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:11pm Linda Lee:

sweet little bell in this piece is like a temple bell during meditation. brings you back to the moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:12pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/5/18 5:17pm Alison Porchnik:

This song was definitely written by a man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:17pm Linda Lee:

Ah one of my favorites, seconded only by Brian Dewan's cover of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:19pm Linda Lee:

this is sounding a bit like "music of mind control" :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:20pm Carmichael:

Is this the follow-up to Indian Lake?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:20pm coelacanth∅:

yup Linda and often we don't know who's older, younger, what they do for money, for fun, what color they are, even male or female; so those of us, which i feel is most of us, that are not especially arrogant, they will get what can be got from the comment board, without prejudice. it's a unique situation, i think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:22pm Linda Lee:

yes, absolutely. Mark Hurst shared his opinion that the fmu boards are what social media *should* be. i'd agree.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:32pm coelacanth∅:

...sometimes it's difficult to let go of and maybe distracting, the knowledge that a man penned the songs in a female-fronted band. (ie cowboy junkies; shocking blue...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:33pm Linda Lee:

i just assume a man penned the song unless i find out otherwise. no reason not to.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 5:35pm Linda Lee:

@Laura L ~ thanks for the recommend! just about time for a little national soul-searching. picking apart mechanisms of our social engineering has to be part of it.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 5:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, Quite a perceptive little summery. I will hazard a guess here - most of the people who use the comment board are independently wealthy, and are still on the veranda of their summer home dictating their musing to their chore whore. Or, indigent shut-ins with no money and social life whatsoever.
