Hello, all! Can anyone ID today's LP-under-the-cassettes? It's an obscure one, but if you know it, it should be fairly easy to recognize, even though it's turned sideways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 11:56am Tony Coulter:

Big hint: The artist's name is partially visible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 11:59am listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday, Tony and all! Hope the air quality isn't too ultra-brutal from the fires. It's just one after another, it seems, on the West Coast.
Avatar    Tue. 8/21/18 12:01pm βrian:

No but I see the outline of the state of Wisconsin there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, James! Unfortunately the air quality here in Portland is pretty bad at the moment. I've been going out as little as possible. Supposedly, tho, it'll improve tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: Hello ... and good spotting! Wisconsin is in the title of the album.
Avatar    Tue. 8/21/18 12:03pm βrian:

No fires here, but as I mentioned elsewhere, we got hammered with 11+ inches of rain last night.

Sufjan Stevens?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:04pm JtotheK:

hi tony, hi everyone. I performed internet research and found the LP, the artist is familiar (i've seen other work in the 'local' section of area shops...but not seen that LP before.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

@ βrian:Not Sufjan, no.

Hey, hey, mb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

This Dimthings tape -- or at least my version of it -- doesn't have cover art, as you can see -- just a folded insert with tracklist and lyrics.

Hola, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

This "Banner of Doom" track has some Henry Cow flavorings, I'd say
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

Dimthings has quite a few releases, by the way -- including lots of LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

@ NGH: Dimthings was based in Florida for years -- think he's in NYC now, tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Miramar, FL, wherever that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

Again, everything heard on this tape was played by James Edward Garcia (Dimthings).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

played and sung
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 12:50pm northguineahills:

Miramar is just a wee bit b/tn Ft Lauderdale and Miami. So, rather far from me....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

The next track features Dimthings fiddling around with CDs, DJ style -- '86 was pretty early for that, I'd say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

The next track ... aka "this track."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:10pm northguineahills:

I didn't get my first cd until '86. (it was in Singapore, MJ's "Bad" and Weird Al's "Fat")
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:13pm northguineahills:

Whoops, that would have been xmas '87.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

The very first CD I ever bought was this one: www.discogs.com...

So that would've been '88.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:17pm Tony Coulter:

PS: Sorry for the temporary playlist confusion. Damn you, twitchy fingers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:20pm northguineahills:

Considering I was just 11 at the time (but I still love those albums).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:24pm Rich in Washington:

I don't remember if it was the very FIRST CD I bought, but the first one I remember buying and still have was John Zorn's Naked City.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:25pm northguineahills:

@Rich: I have that one! (on cd, and mp3)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

I still like CDs, but I have to say, almost all CDs from before around '88 sound horrible. In my opinion, the golden age of CDs, sound-wise, is the decade or so from the late '80s to the late '90s. After that, the loudness wars ruined everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:26pm Rich in Washington:

Although I'm pretty sure the first CD I owned was The Misfits S/T compilation. It was only available on CD at the time and my (1st) wife bought it for me and an insanely expensive CD player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:27pm Tony Coulter:

... with exceptions, of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:27pm Rich in Washington:

Once one got over the novelty of hearing no rumble or crackle or tape hiss, the sterility of some of those early mastered CDs was really stark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:29pm Rich in Washington:

It's funny, though. It's as if some labels have forgotten how to master for vinyl, or simply don't care. I've bought quite a few recent vinyl reissues that just don't sound good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:29pm northguineahills:

Merzbow won the loudness war (he purposely did not master a volume high end and turned it up to 11.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:31pm Rich in Washington:

The non-Superior Viaduct early Resident reissues really sound awful. I haven't yet bought any of the SV reissues, but I am reasonably sure they are very good, as other albums I've bought on that label are excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: The whole vinyl versus CD thing is silly -- mastering is the real issue. The majority of recent vinyl is horribly mastered -- often on a computer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:36pm northguineahills:

Love the label's name!
Avatar    Tue. 8/21/18 1:41pm Mayuko:

Yes, he is always super-fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:44pm Webhamster Henry:

I told myself I wasn't getting a CD player until 10 of my friends gave me CDs (usuall of them) to play.
The first CDs I got were "Inuit Games and Songs", "Jump (Van Dyke Parks)".
If that doesn't scream "Give the Drummer Stream", I don't know what does!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:45pm northguineahills:

@Mayuko: Got your awesome poster( going to frame it), thought I got your premium, but, considering I got two boxes of loot, I'm not complaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:46pm coelacanth∅:

i had intended to never buy cds. in the 80s & 90s i was making sort of annual trips to shanachie records and picking up usually between 25 and 85 records; then one time they had almost no records, so i chose cassettes instead of cds.
- then c.1997 an ex-girlfriend was moving for a year to renton and she asked me to keep her cds and player. a first generation fisher single-play cd deck. eventually i started buying used cds at the record store near work if under $3.
to this day i haven't bought very many new cds.
Avatar    Tue. 8/21/18 1:48pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills aw! thank you!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:48pm coelacanth∅:

(i'm sure i have more new cds won during fmu fundraising time than those bought)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 1:52pm northguineahills:

@coel: That's definitely the case w/ me, as the missus has barred me from record stores....

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:20pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, ManDance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

The "Vini" this track is dedicated to *must* be Vini Reilly (Mr. Durutti Column).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

Weird to think of the beginning of the CD era. Most retail music stores had just before let their vinyl record inventories dwindle, while stocking huge amounts of cassettes. I think cassettes dominated the market just before CDs came around. It was a completely portable format. You could listen in your car, take tapes to work to irritate and confuse your coworkers, etc.
I don't think CDs where playable in cars for a quite a while after they emerged on the scene, or am I wrong? I remember my first 'portable' CD player, a Sony Discman D555 couldn't really be played in a moving car at all, and certainly not while walking around. It set me back something like 500 late 80s dollars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:26pm Rich in Washington:

But it was weird that I was SO into cassettes at the time but woefully unaware of the wonderful cassette releases of the type that are on this show. I guess it helps that I lived many, many miles away from any real music stores.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

At lot of these kinds of cassettes were never in more than a tiny handful of stores anyway. Mostly you had to get them through the mail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:28pm Rich in Washington:

There's this funny and persistent, recurring meme with youngsters that cassettes sounded horrible and weren't fully embraced by music consumers. It sort of purports that cassettes were the 8-track of the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:30pm Rich in Washington:

Someone should make a documentary on the cassette culture scene, but everyone's a documentary filmmaker these days (which is why so few niche culture docs are any good).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:32pm Tony Coulter:

Actually, there are already two docs on the cassette underground scene. I've seen one....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

Here's the one I've seen, which is just OK: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:34pm Webhamster Henry:

It was definitely a mail-and-zine store "Cassette Culture" for me. That and taping shows off the air. And compiling my own stuff.
But I was late to cassettes because I had an open reel deck and lots of tapes I had made as a teenager.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:38pm Tony Coulter:

One bad/sad thing is that a lot of '80s cassettes are starting to go for a ton of money -- oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:41pm Tony Coulter:

Not even "starting" ... are already....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

And, of course, the artists aren't getting any of that money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:46pm coelacanth∅:

ah, one of my favorites
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:50pm coelacanth∅:

Rich @2.28 there's also a persistent misconception that 8-track tapes sounded horrible!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/21/18 2:54pm Tony Coulter:
