'Mona in Italian is a polite form of address originating as "ma donna" – similar to "Ma’am", "Madam", or "my lady" in English. This became "madonna", and its contraction "mona". The title of the painting, though traditionally spelled "Mona" (as used by Vasari), is also commonly spelled in modern Italian as Monna Lisa ("mona" being a vulgarity in some Italian dialects) but this is rare in English.[citation needed]'

@fred: 'Noise' by Jacques Attali : Not the usual treatise on the metaphysics of Music - but Music as Weapon - as Territorial definer of space...
Could it be this that brings us together? The Aquarian Age paradox of uniting over the inability to unite...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 12:36pm fred:

@RevRab: A friend is writing her PhD thesis on the DIY noise scene. And she got a 3-year scholarship to do it! (The funding is gone by now, but socio-musicology scholarships are rare here, like at most one a year over the whole country)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 12:37pm Kurt Gottschalk:

fred, she must be a nervous wreck by now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 12:38pm Planet Tyler:

I always play wfmu out loud in my office...but then again it's mostly empty. Super fun when someone comes in though. I never turn it off. Down maybe but no one makes me turn it off.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 12:43pm Kurt Gottschalk:

good to hear. i find a need a doo-wop break every so often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 12:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In 'This Is Your Brain On Music' - a takeaway is that a major metric of Music's appeal is the balance of familiarity ('this sound is recognizable as Music') - w/ novelty ('this Music is surprising & intriguing & has my attention'). So - how do you explain us??
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 12:55pm fred:

@RevRab: I originally misread Marcel's show title as "was that music?". It didn't seem out of place on the station
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 12:58pm Kat in Chicago:

Haha fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 12:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hm. Putting it in the past tense...If Music is an attempt to arrange vibration in some kind of harmony - or @ least pattern...what does it all mean, Mr.Natural?? Another takeaway from same book: Music uses more dif parts of the brain than about anything else...that's a big takeaway, seems to me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 1:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(We have fMRIs now. Pattern is therefore discussed much in the age-old body-brain-mind Consciousness...thang...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 1:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 1:11pm Devin B.:

@RevRab: That's really interesting - about music engaging more parts of the brain than other stimuli. Seems to explain what we get from it better than the theory about balancing familiarity and novelty.

@RevRab: fMRI is overhyped. The technology is just too expensive, so studies often involve a dozen people (often grad students) and make sweeping generalizations
Also, MES!

@geez: That Eclipse is on the USA's chart's (7/4/1776) horizon - & on & on...he has the fixed star Regulus - star of Kings in Leo - on his Ascendant...w/ his Mars (think - BurntOrange)...Algol - star of dread & beheading top of his chart...everything you'd expect...

i'm sorry g, but i don't like Frank's voice much! i'd rather hear the kingston trio version
...i agree with you about Kurt's show being a masterpiece though!

Who’s on lead guitar here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/3/18 2:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

MilesDavis said Frank influenced him as a Musician. In PrePostMod days I hated him as a honky square - would mimic him...& realized - because I really liked him & Crooners. Clear case of came to laugh stayed to pray. Not all his output was his best...
