Excellent!
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:14pm Erica:

Never heard the Carole King demo of this song before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:15pm Funky16Corners:

It's cool, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:15pm coelacanth∅:

hey Larry and others

caught the tail of that Emitt Rhodes song - "dear prudence" guitar, beautiful vocals! i have to hear that whole thing soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:18pm coelacanth∅:

Carole King has an official release of her demos from the early 60s (& before?) it's pretty special.

"Hello but I must be going." -Groucho Marx. Me too, just here for a bit but hello anyway.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:20pm Erica:

Hello, goodbye to you too TDK60.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

Hey C! TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:22pm Funky16Corners:

@C-re Emitt Rhodes, one of the best of the Beatles-reimagineers
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:24pm Erica:

So Part 1 is the 60s Singers and Songwriters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

This is the first recorded cover of a Gram Parsons song
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Both parts cover the 60s and 70s
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:28pm Erica:

Just wondering Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:29pm Funky16Corners:

No problem. That's why I'm here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:30pm coelacanth∅:

so, i've heard of Emitt Rhodes but not sure i've heard his music. was/is he a session guy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

Not really. Started with the Palace Guard, then the Merry go Round, then solo. He did a few sessions, but mainly how own stuff
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:32pm still b/p:

The image of Bobby Goldsboro's haircut haunts even someone else's version of that song for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

his own stuff. I'm tired, can't type
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:32pm TDK60:

Yeah at the time (early '70s) Emmit Rhodes seemed like a McCartney-esque melodious songwriter with lots of potential. 2 albums or so then. Then he went into studio production work in the background I think. He was intereviewed by Michael Shelley several years back I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP! I prefer Glen Campbell's version to the Goldsboro hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:33pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - He did an interview in the last few years that made him seem unhinged/lost
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:33pm coelacanth∅:

hmm. thanks. i will investigate further.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:33pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

hey NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:35pm doctorjazz:

Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:36pm TDK60:

Wikip. says 4 E.R. solo LPs back then. And a 2016 one.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:36pm Franco Twinkie:

If I remember correctly, The Palace Guard had a song called Falling Sugar, I think, That was most probably about heroin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Franco! That was their big one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:38pm doctorjazz:

Brings to mind "She's Leaving Home" , at least part of the tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:39pm Funky16Corners:

Yes! I was just hearing that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:39pm doctorjazz:

Ole Gord is an outstanding songwriter with a voice that sounds like warm.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:41pm Franco Twinkie:

I knew it! They wore uniforms. But that didn't hide the possibility that they might be familiar with narcotics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:42pm Funky16Corners:

I think it's safe to assume that everyone back then was at the very least 'familiar' with narcotics
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

thanks TDK that might actually be where i know him from. i used to listen to Shelley almost religiously back then, and i wouldn't have been on the comment board yet in 2010.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Kapp records had a nice picture of a hat on their label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

Yes! Marching band hat1
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:49pm doctorjazz:

I've eaten at that restaurant
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:50pm still b/p:

Now, Bobby Goldsboro.....Looking quickly at Wiki bits for the hell of it, I see he wrote all the music for the TV show Evening Shade, he caused some controversy with a suggestive song in '73, and had "huge" Northern Soul hits in UK with A & B sides of a '66 release. Who knew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:51pm TDK60:

coel: I was only occasionally on the board back in 2000-10. // That Gordon L. one was really good. // Great to hear some of this older folk and folky-rock.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:51pm Erica:

Really doctor or was that a joke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - His "Northern" record is pretty cool. There's a pretty amazing list of weird outliers like that, Paul Anka, Joey Heatherton etc
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:52pm Franco Twinkie:

I found a 45 of Walking My Cat Named Dog at the Amoeba in San Francisco for 50 cents. It was a very happy day for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:52pm doctorjazz:

Just kidding, really liked the tune, never heard of her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - His early stuff, when he was being covered more than heard himself is really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Norma is one of my faves
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

having never heard of Norma Tanega in my days of buying lots of records, if i'd found a record with a song called "walking my cat named dog" i'd buy it without having to hear it first.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:55pm Franco Twinkie:

I love her! She was Dusty Springfields girlfriend. There is a great video of her in a cocktail dress plaing a Gibson SG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:56pm Funky16Corners:

@C - Norma's first album is a genuine, rock solid lost/forgotten classic. She was writing really interesting songs but was only known for her novelty
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:57pm TDK60:

Agree Funky 16. I'm not a big Gordon L. fan but agree the earlier stuff is good.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:57pm Franco Twinkie:

I think she teaches ceramics at Scripps collage which is not to far from here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

I heard she had gone into the visual arts. Very interesting woman.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 10:59pm Franco Twinkie:

Marianne Faithful covered Norma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 10:59pm TDK60:

Hate to leave such an intriguing show but, as promised, I must be going...to my horizontal furniture. Thanks DJ LG! See ya folks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

ronald mcdonald trump is motivational...he motivates people toward outrage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

'night TDK
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:05pm Erica:

Haha! Ronald McDonald Trump.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:07pm Franco Twinkie:

I think Doug Cox had something to do with the demise of the best "underground" station ever. KPPC in Pasadena, sister station of KMPX in San Francisco. If that is the case. I hate his motherfucking guts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:09pm Funky16Corners:

Nite TDK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:10pm Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - I think I recall seeing something like that when I was researching him. He was first and foremost a music industry guy
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:13pm Jeff Ash:

I will neither make it to the end of this show nor the end of the Brewers game in LA. Carry on, sir!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:13pm Funky16Corners:

Have a good night Jeff!
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes. I know it's him. KPPC was the WFMU of L.A. From 1968 to 1971. It is the reason, or at least one of them, why I am the way I am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

this is bizarre...and intriguing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:15pm Funky16Corners:

Which, that Jake Thackray?
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:16pm Franco Twinkie:

The topic still gets me all rattled all these years later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:17pm doctorjazz:

Great song, never heard this version by Dashiell. . Like his singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

yes, Jake.
- something in there made me want to have a beer
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:17pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I love this version. Was very happy to discover it. A fave of mine via Dorough
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:18pm coelacanth∅:

(...the black swan) now this makes me want to have a glass of whiskey!
  Wed. 8/1/18 11:18pm rw:

Hello all! Did someone say beer? Love this song. Hey Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:19pm Funky16Corners:

@C- Thackray is a very, very interesting guy. It's remarkable that he was as successful as he was in the UK, and got heard in the US at all. He was kind of an English take on French chanson. A very acquired taste, but one that I have indeed acquired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:19pm Funky16Corners:

Hey rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:19pm coelacanth∅:

hey rw...you just did!
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:19pm Erica:

Mmmmm. Beeeerrr. *drools*
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:20pm still b/p:

That Thackray track was like 75% Walter Huston as heard singing September Song, and 25% Noel Coward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:21pm Funky16Corners:

Great approximation!
  Wed. 8/1/18 11:21pm rw:

Okay, heading for the refrigerator now... anybody need anything?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:21pm Funky16Corners:

I could go for a beer, but no drinky on show night
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:22pm still b/p:

I want the chilled dark chocolate, but I won't sleep if I have some.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:23pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Geezerette!
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:23pm Erica:

It isn't Bruce Lee either geezerette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:23pm Funky16Corners:

Nor is is Lee Lee Sobiesky, Robert E Lee or Lee Vis.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:24pm Erica:

Thanks coel but I don't drink beer. I was just making a Homer Simpson reference haha.

Buffy St Marie's singing (particularly her vibrato) always drives me crazy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

The album that's from (Illuminations) keeps it to a minimum. I know what you mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:26pm coelacanth∅:

haha Erica i should've recognised that reference
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:26pm doctorjazz:

This Newbury is more my speed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:27pm coelacanth∅:

dr j Barbara Lewis' does it for me
  Wed. 8/1/18 11:27pm geezerette:

Erica, heh. :)
Larry, I'm not even sure Peggy Lee recorded that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

Mickey reminds me of John Prine
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:29pm Funky16Corners:

@Geezerette - It would not surprise me of she had. It was a standard of a kind in its day
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:30pm Funky16Corners:

@C - He was probably an influence on Prine. Newbury was was better known as a songwriter than he was as a performer.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:30pm Franco Twinkie:

My man! Fred Neil. This is the greatest song ever. Jefferson Airplane kills it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:31pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, great, original version of a folk rock standard
  Wed. 8/1/18 11:31pm geezerette:

Ilove that song.

And this Fred Neil recording. Gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:32pm doctorjazz:

Used to the Airplane version, think they lean into the flatted notes more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

there's another version, not ja's, that i like but i can't think of who it is...
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:32pm Franco Twinkie:

Gram Parsons?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:33pm Funky16Corners:

Fred Neil is another one of those voices that sounds like melted chocolate
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:33pm Erica:

Cashman, Pistilli & West? Is that the same Cashman & West who released American City Suite?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:33pm Funky16Corners:

Yes
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:34pm Franco Twinkie:

The Airplane's version has a fury that underscores the sentiment.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:35pm Erica:

Figured. I have American City Suite on a 70's CD compilation by Rhino Records
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:35pm Funky16Corners:

Their stuff is cool.
  Wed. 8/1/18 11:36pm rw:

Man. All these songs. And I wish there were a way to pass a few drinks and some chocolate through this phone app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:36pm doctorjazz:

Ruthann Friedman? Lovely! Not even vaguely familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:36pm coelacanth∅:

maybe it is the airplane's. it's definitely the one i know best, but i'm imagining a more folky version...and not Gram Parsins and not peter paul & mary...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

- doesn't matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:37pm Funky16Corners:

Ruthann wrote 'Windy' for the Association, and nly recorded one album and a few 45s on her own.
  Wed. 8/1/18 11:37pm geezerette:

Larry, he does!
This music is such sweet adolescent meløncholy, from the days before outboard brains.
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:37pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw Ruthann not to long ago at local bookstore. She told a funny story about running around with Neil Young on the Sunset Strip in 1966.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/1/18 11:37pm Funky16Corners:

She pops up in some unusual places early on
Avatar Wed. 8/1/18 11:38pm Erica:

Cashman, Pistilli & West's music is hard to find though Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/1/18 11:38pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Larry! Will read when I'm not typing/listening. Larry Marks is amazing and dearly missed. L.A. Breakdown is a personal fave. In addition to producing The Burritos, he wrote the theme song for Scooby Doo!
