The Dead's original?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:11pm Parq:

Knew the Persuasions' 70s stuff, but this is a totally new one on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - You're welcome! I love this album. I still want to track down their early stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:12pm coelacanth∅:

the original europe 72 version (was there a released version besides that? before all the inferior dicks picks versions complicated matters?!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:13pm Funky16Corners:

I don't think so
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:15pm chresti:

I have "We came to play"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:16pm chresti:

I don't have "dick's picks"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:17pm coelacanth∅:

i once worked at a cemetery (didn't i mention that recently?) and one of the guys used to sing loudly while he used the weed wacker. he usually sang the same song, and when i asked him what it was he said it was an a cappella group but i subsequently forgot the name - though i still kind of remember the song. i wonder if it was the persuasions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:19pm northguineahills:

What, you don't have all 85 Dick's Pick/s, chresti, you monster!

Loved that Persuasions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:19pm chresti:

How did it go?@coel
Oh my gosh!@Larry
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:22pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, crazy, right? I wole up in the middle of last week with diminished hearing in my left ear. It got painful, and fortunately I didn't have to wait too long to see an ENT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:23pm chresti:

I used to sing this when I was 10
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:23pm Funky16Corners:

One of the eeriest, coolest records ever made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

i don't mind the dicks picks. i guess it's good for folks who obsess over some version that they were tripping to or whatever and therefore it's the best version to them. -and the previously hard to find best versions of "i know you rider" - pre-1967; pre-china cat sunflower have seen daylight again.
...it just clogs up jukeboxes and such, that's all; and they are inferior, in general. that's why they weren't released at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:24pm Funky16Corners:

I only have a few, one from the Shrine Auditorium in 1967 and one from the early 80s
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:25pm coelacanth∅:

chresti (@10.19) i'll sing it for you after a few drinks!
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:26pm Erica:

I'm guessing it's different versions of Ode to Billie Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:27pm chresti:

the only grateful dead I know is one my brother had, cripple creek(?)
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:27pm Erica:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:27pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Just this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:27pm Funky16Corners:

Versions Rule!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:29pm coelacanth∅:

my introduction to the 'dead was "vintage dead". released without their permission, the band and the deadhead community generally pretended it didn't exist. aside from "san francisco's grateful dead" it's their best album, in my opinion. best versions of all songs on it. en.wikipedia.org...
...this is now available on a dicks picks from the avalon (sp?) ballroom from 1966.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:29pm Funky16Corners:

It really is one of the most heavily covered song of the 60s. I'm sur wherever Bobbie Gentry is, she's sitting on a mountain of 100 dollar bills
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:30pm coelacanth∅:

chresti cripple creek was "the band".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

Vintage Dead is a cool set
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:30pm hyde:

hmmm, i somehow found myself on the July 20 playlist. the future is lonely
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:30pm Parq:

Bobbie Gentry was one of my first celeb crushes, and the first one I can distinctly remember. And this song is perfect, not to mention what a cultural rosetta stone it was in the late 60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:31pm coelacanth∅:

hyde! live in the now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

Then they made that awful movie with Robbie Benson,
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

hey Hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:32pm coelacanth∅:

(or as Leonard Cohen said,"i've seen the future, brother, it is murder")
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:33pm chresti:

Oh I think it was "american beauty" that my brother had
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:33pm Parq:

Nice change of sex by Tex.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:33pm Franco Twinkie:

Any thing on Groove Merchant is worth buying, even if you don't know what the hell it is I have found. And yes, Larry, Vintage Dead is as good as anything for that raw '66 sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:34pm chresti:

Franco is the dead head
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

I love the early, garagey Pigpen Dead
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:34pm hyde:

love this set
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:35pm Erica:

That Joe Tex version was too crackly to enjoy. Shame because I like the part where he says soul food lol.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:35pm Franco Twinkie:

Among other things,yes.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:35pm Erica:

Also hello hyde. I see your profile pic is a cat. I love cats too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

Sorry, sometimes vinyl carries the scars of age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

hells yeah, Pig Pen... and Weir's terrible singing wasn't as terrible then, before he unjustifiably got confident!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:36pm chresti:

On many levels-you're a storehouse of things dead franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:37pm Parq:

The country was still in the throes of post-WWII resentment when Jerry Lewis, playing an interrogated Japanese POW on a late 60s variety show cried it "I tawk, I tawk, I even terr what Birry Joe thlew off the Tarrahachi Blidge!" Not everything about the 60s was Woodstock and MLK, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:37pm hyde:

@Erica hi! yeah, my profile pic is of my old one eyed cat Satu, who was the sweetest cat i ever owned
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:38pm Erica:

@hyde Aww
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Me too Larry, The stuff from Buena Vista is great and horrible at the same time! A contradiction? Not in my universe.

Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:40pm Franco Twinkie:

It is,is,is.....is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:40pm coelacanth∅:

Parq, well jerry lee lewis was a douche anyway. i'm sure he felt totally righteous doing that.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:42pm Jeff Ash:

I didn't mind the noise on the Joe Tex record. It wasn't too bad. That's one of the charms of old vinyl.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:42pm Erica:

Wrong Jerry coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:43pm chresti:

I missed that one, Parq
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:43pm Erica:

I don't get the charm Jeff. Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:43pm coelacanth∅:

agreed Jeff. i like the warm crackle of loved vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yeah, soul of a different kind
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

ohhh! Jerry Lewis! oops.
thank you Erica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

-and that's sad...though i really don't know much about jerry lewis - except that he wasn't very funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:45pm chresti:

depends how it's mixed re: crackles, for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

RE Jerry Lewis - The biggest most diseased ego in Hollywood.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry, my friend Bruce used to work with Harlan at the Los Angeles Free Press in 65-66. He said at the time, you couldn't stand to close to the guy because he never took a bath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:47pm chresti:

my ex used to work on the telethon years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:47pm coelacanth∅:

i have some records that are beyond enjoyable because of thick crackles; but my tolerance is pretty high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:47pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - The aroma of brilliance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

When you've spent as much time chasing down old records, sometimes you take what you can get, and that is often in questionable condition. But you wouldn't toss the Rosetta Stone because it was chipped. You dig the importance in the grooves and squint a little to get past the noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:50pm chresti:

as long as they play...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

Yup.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:51pm Erica:

For me Larry, it's all about the music/audio is the best available condition possible. If I have to hear it on vinyl, it's because it was released on that format exclusively otherwise I prefer CDs and mp3s for convienient reasons.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:51pm Erica:

Same goes for tape formats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

Best condition POSSIBLE being the operating principle
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:52pm Erica:

I don't buy into that whole charm, warmth, artwork and bells and whistles that vinyl lovers crave for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

i'll take all of the above, please! (well, i can't think of any album cover that had bells or whistles attached to it, but if there is one i'm all for it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:55pm Funky16Corners:

Too bad. Lots of charm there, but then again I'm talking about rare records. I'd love to hear some of my 45s in pristine condition, but there are only so many of them, only so much money in the wallet, and a lifetime of acclimation that allows me to enjoy them as they are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:56pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I'm sure some hippie somewhere released an album with atual bells and whistles attached. Someone once released and LP soaked in patchouli,
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:57pm Erica:

it's a figure of speech coel. I meant I don't go for the extra stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:57pm chresti:

is there one soaked in lsd?
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 10:57pm Franco Twinkie:

There was this show on KPFK in the 1970's that was a weekly summit meeting of all Sci-Fi weirdos in L.A. Harlan was on often. that was my introduction to him. Up util then, I was not aware of the term megalomaniac. There were others, but Harlan beat everyone else hands down. I never missed a show if I could help it. It was one of the best shows on the air back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, he was a hard guy to love, but his writing made it all work (at least for me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:58pm coelacanth∅:

good sound and album art are not extras.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

what album was it that was supposed to explode confetti out of it when it was first opened?
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:00pm Erica:

It IS distracting thought coel. And there was no confetti. You have a weird imagination. Haha!
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:00pm Franco Twinkie:

I forgot what a one man band he was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:00pm Funky16Corners:

I don't remember that one. I love all the early to mid 70s albums with revolving die cut unfolding triptychs etc
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:01pm Sig:

Ethics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - He was (in his prime) extraordinarily prolific. Fiction and non-fiction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 11:03pm Mike Sin:

Was Harlan actually an employee of Disney for a short time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

@10.56 i once met a woman, a good bit my senior, who worked in a shop on the next block. she shopped in my store and with some frequency brought my mixtapes. they always smelled of patchouli and i grew to love the smell of patchouli, if it's quality oil and depending who's wearing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

("brought ME" mixtapes)
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:04pm Franco Twinkie:

No doubt, Larry. He was like a little lump of burning phosphorus sitting on your arm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Mike! I think I remember a story about him having a brief sojourn at Disney which he - as he often did - sabotaged bu standing on a table and blaspheming Walt or Mickey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 11:06pm Mike Sin:

Hi Larry -- i actually never heard of a Disney connection until reading all the recent obituaries/recollections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:07pm Funky16Corners:

I think he was the kind of writer that everyone wanted to hire, until they met him and realized what they were in for
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:13pm Franco Twinkie:

This is great! I love funked-up versions of hippie anthems. Recently I found a '45 of the Staple Singers doing For What It's Worth. Brilliant!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:15pm Funky16Corners:

That's a great one!
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:15pm Franco Twinkie:

Also on Epic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:16pm chresti:

there had to be a confetti spewing album, and glitter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:16pm Funky16Corners:

The Staples Epic period is my favorite era of theirs
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Love 'um! Saw the open for The Ike And Tina Turner Review.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:19pm Funky16Corners:

Wow! I'm jealous, two of my faves
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:24pm Erica:

Nice Youngbloods song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:25pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks. Yeah, great band.
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:27pm Sig:

Well I love the old fashioned radar depicting the world map, with all it's bleeps and dots. Once seen and always data stored. But I really don't know computer's. Just an autodidact who speaks
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

chresti probably more than one. there was one that i read about just within the past few months but i read about a lot of artists. apparently the record company vetoed it but some copies supposedly did get out.
it's gonna bother me until i remember!
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:37pm Erica:

No offense but this is a pretty weak version of " A Whiter Shade of Pale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:37pm chresti:

I was thinking kind of pale rendition of pale
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:38pm Funky16Corners:

Wow, really disappointing you tonight?
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:39pm Erica:

Sorry Larry, just being honest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:40pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks for your honesty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:40pm chresti:

not at all! There was a weird longface quality-and I have a stick up my ....about the everlys
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:41pm Funky16Corners:

I love that album. They even get psychedelic on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:42pm chresti:

oh yeah? I think they hit it sometimes
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:43pm Erica:

Yea but their later stuff isn't recognized too much because it wasn't as successful as their songs from the late 50s/early 60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:46pm chresti:

coelcanth, right? where's Franco, he might know about glitter/confetti containing albums
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:48pm Franco Twinkie:

I know nothing of such nonsense! But I do know we need dish soap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:48pm chresti:

duly noted!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:50pm chresti:

how about soap in an album?

Sometimes the truth is funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 11:50pm coelacanth∅:

i'm thinking it could've been Prince, but more likely much earlier than his career. 'trying to remember who i've researched the discography of in the last few months but i frequently erase my history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:53pm chresti:

Flo and Eddie gave out cocktail glasses with their faces on it, for a show at the Roxy
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/18/18 11:53pm Funky16Corners:

They had some great album covers
Avatar Wed. 7/18/18 11:53pm Franco Twinkie:

I think Martin Mull tried putting soap in a record, Well, maybe not. But I know he had a bubble machine once when I saw him at The Troubador.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/18/18 11:54pm coelacanth∅:
