@Jeff: did the purge yield forgotten gems?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Hello, and same to you, @listener james!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:11am Jeff Golick:

@fred: no "gems," exactly, but the time travel that occurs while excavating can bring occasional moments of remembered joy
  Sun. 6/17/18 9:16am Listener Gregory:

Spent 5 min trying to get sound to come out of my speakers and will now listen through laptop that sounds as if it is underwater. But I'm not complaining!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:20am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:21am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Listener Gregory. That sounds annoying. (Though: the show did start rather quietly...?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:21am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @Andrew Waterloo!

Listening on a bluetooth speaker now, which is slightly better than... whoops, its battery just died!

Thumbscrew are coming back to Pittsburgh next week. They are doing two consecutive nights: “Ours,” an evening of originals, and “Theirs,” an evening of covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:45am Jeff Golick:

Those should be wonderful evenings, @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 9:45am doctorjazz:

Aram Shelton, nice track. Not a familiar name. Hi all, Happy Father's Day to those who are Father's Day-ing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:47am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, and to you, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 9:49am doctorjazz:

Sounds like great shows, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 9:53am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff, and hello to the OUT crowd. Picture perfect sunny day here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 9:56am fred:

I think I'm done booking tickets for next season. I'm tempted by a couple more shows, but the dates are overlapping with other shows. I already have 51, so that's a great haul anyway. Mostly dance, including 10 Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:58am Jeff Golick:

@Sem! Howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 9:59am Jeff Golick:

@fred: all I can say is WOW. How wonderful to have all that to look forward to (not to mention experience).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:00am Jeff Golick:

I'm not really clear on who's playing trumpet on this Thing cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:04am Stanley:

This Thing is a thing.
Hi Jeff and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:05am fred:

The downside is that Instants Chavirés is in even more financial trouble than usual, so there will only be a few shows there until the end of the year
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:05am Jeff Golick:

How do, @Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:07am Jeff Golick:

That is sad to hear, @fred, even though I only know the venue via a few recordings.
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:12am Listener Gregory:

I wondered about the trumpet too, Jeff. I went to The Thing's Bandcamp site, and it suggests that Joe McPhee was a special guest on trumpet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:13am fred:

@Jeff: I think you have first-hand knowledge of how shoestring operations work. Survival is never a given
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:16am northguineahills:

WC keeps me from sleep. I'm already a zombie, and there's 3.5 more weeks. Wearing my El Tri jersey at the footy pub to the Mexis get their asses handed to them vs Alemania.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:18am Jeff Golick:

Pace yourself, @northguineahills! Welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:19am doctorjazz:

Seen Adam O'Farrell playing in bands led by others... He's terrific!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:21am northguineahills:

I've watched every game live since 1998 (when all games were broadcast in the US, I ain't stopping that streak now. (asked for a monitor at work just to watch said games).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:21am Andrew Waterloo:

I've only seen Joe McPhee play the toy trumpet
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:24am Listener Gregory:

@Andrew Yes, they refer to it as the "pocket trumpet." Sorry! He is only listed on the page for the song, not the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:24am northguineahills:

The last time I saw Joe McPhee play, he had a menagerie of instruments, including a lot of brass instruments that I've never seen or heard from before or since and various specific keys. He was very kind in explaining them to me after the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:25am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for the McPhee trumpet recon, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:25am northguineahills:

err...specified to be in various specific musical keys...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:26am fred:

@Andrew Waterloo: the first time I saw Joe McPhee he played a pocket trumpet
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:27am northguineahills:

Joe's collection should be in the Smithsonian....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:29am northguineahills:

(I grew up playing the cornet and french horn)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:30am fred:

And when I saw Joe McPhee earlier this year he was wearing a "Joe McPhee" jacket. That takes some confidence, warranted in his case
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:32am Dean:

Speaking of the Smithsonian, I went to Down Home Records yesterday, where somebody recently unloaded a bunch of vintage "out" jazz CDs: Roscoe Mitchell, Ed Blackwell, Christy Doran, etc. Probably a couple hundred disks, and one of the clerks told me there are more to go out. Owner Chris Stracchwitz was there, pleased to see the pile I'd selected. He sold much of his Arhoolie Records to the Smithsonian (Folkways) not too long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:33am doctorjazz:

Sounds like a great haul!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:33am Andrew Waterloo:

I saw Joe on Friday. Only brought the pocket trumpet, and the soprano sax. Read some poetry as well.
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:34am Dean:

Might have to return today, by way of self-proffered Fathers Day gift...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:34am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Dean. Seems like a very good gift to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:35am Andrew Waterloo:

I went to a large out-of-town record store yesterday and bought a bunch of stuff. Calling it a fathers day gift is a good idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:35am doctorjazz:

I saw Nels Cline do Lovers (Philadelphia) couple of weeks ago, put together an orchestra,, great show!
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:35am Dean:

Right. Yesterday was just run-of-the-mill shopping. Today is special. Heh.
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:37am Dean:

Been listening lately to the work of Nels and others on the three tribute volumes on Cryptogramophone of the music of Eric von Essen. Really gorgeous music-making.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:37am Sem:

Beautiful change-up, loving this mornings show, JG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:38am doctorjazz:

Record shopping for Father's Day, sounds like a great idea, hmmm. Under the weather a bit, though, don't have the energy. There's always Discogs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:39am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Sem. Making it up as it goes along...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:40am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: who/when was von Essen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:41am fred:

@doctorjazz: If only there was an online playlist for you to mention the records you'd buy if you felt better, preferably in the morning
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:42am Dean:

An LA session/club musician connected to the Clines, Bob Brookmeyer, Alan Broadbent, and a long list of folks who'd roll through town. He studied composition at UCLA, but really determined to go his own way. Ended up teaching in Sweden. Died quite young in '97, probably from heart failure due to substance abuse. Check out the three Cryptogramophone disks produced by Jeff Gauthier (another Jeff G.!).
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:44am Dean:

These three records feature his relatively unknown compositions. Meanwhile, I'm on the trail of his own recordings with Cline, Gauthier, et al.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:45am doctorjazz:

I see v1 is available on Discogs and Amazon.
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:47am Dean:

I'm guessing they're all easy to find, and not expensive.
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:48am Dean:

By "all," I mean the tribute records.
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:50am Listener Gregory:

There's an air quality alert here today, so I am going to go outside and exert myself. Will catch up on the archive, if I survive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 10:50am doctorjazz:

V1 and v2 turned up easily, didn't see v3 yet, but surely it's out there.
This Paragon track makes me smile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Thanks and take care, @LG! Hydrate!
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:51am Dean:

Three bucks, @doctorjazz: https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Music-Of-Eric-Von-Essen-Volume-III/release/5414591
  Sun. 6/17/18 10:52am Dean:

One of the disks I picked up at Down Home yesterday was this Bennie Maupin on Cryptogramophone: https://www.discogs.com/Bennie-Maupin-Ensemble-Penumbra/release/6856520
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 10:58am Jeff Golick:

Wish Cryptog was on Bandcamp. Along with the long gone and lamented Grammavision.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:03am doctorjazz:

Yup, found them all, likely order after the show. Already ordered stuff from today's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:04am northguineahills:

@Dean: Amazing!!! (about the institution started by a Scotsman who never visited the US).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:05am northguineahills:

Ok, I have have two Tony Oxley/Derek Bailey recs, but have never heard this!
  Sun. 6/17/18 11:05am Dean:

Another item from yesterday's stash: Derek Bailey's Ballads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 11:07am Jeff Golick:

Oooh, that's a good one, @Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 11:07am Jeff Golick:

The "other Pat Thomas" on piano here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:13am northguineahills:

Ok, haven't heard this Bill Dixon either.

@Dean: I have that record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:16am northguineahills:

I saw Derek Bailey in Atlanta in 2000 at the church of existentialism (didn't get it either). The Shaking Ray Levis opened, amazing show. He was friendly, and his wife worked the merch table and was adorable. Saw him two years later at a Company thingey at Tonic, bless him!
  Sun. 6/17/18 11:17am Dean:

Ballads is one of those records I kept meaning to buy from its release. I have the Bill Dixon, too, and I've got my eye out for a second volume of Vade Mecum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 11:26am Jeff Golick:

Jelly, @ngh. Never saw Bailey.
  Sun. 6/17/18 11:30am Dean:

Me, neither. Huge oversight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:36am doctorjazz:

The app (that is on the home page, from radiorethink) keeps disconnecting.. Maybe switch to the phone app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:37am northguineahills:

Mexico, up 1-0!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 11:38am Jeff Golick:

@doc: huh. Thanks for the update; not sure what to suggest.

@ngh: my son's goal call from the next room alerted me to that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:44am northguineahills:

Your set made me afraid Oxley kicked the bucket! (anxiety crisis averted!
  Sun. 6/17/18 11:45am Dean:

Another in the continuing series of tributes to *living* artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:46am northguineahills:

Actually saw Oxley, for the life of me, I can't remember the other artists in that combo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 6/17/18 11:47am Jeff Golick:

A highlight for me: seeing Oxley & Cecil Taylor at the Vanguard.
  Sun. 6/17/18 11:49am Dean:

Oxley appeared with CT and BD the year after I had to stop attending Victo: https://www.discogs.com/Tony-Oxley-Ichnos/release/659887
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:50am northguineahills:

Ahh, it was some of the Dutch members of ICP and Moore in different combos.

Thanks Jeff, off to the footy pub. Salud, y avamos Mexico (
immer noch root fur duetchsland otherwise)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:51am northguineahills:

@Dean: D'oh! (don't worry I've shot myself in the foot missing multiple gigs I've regretted).
  Sun. 6/17/18 11:53am Dean:

For sure, @ngh.

It looks like Ken Vandermark will be in town later this month with Eric Revis Quartet at a tiny venue. If I miss it, shame on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:53am doctorjazz:

Great show, Jeff, thanks! Nice week all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 6/17/18 11:56am Stanley:

Thanks Jeff.Wonderful, as always
  Sun. 6/17/18 11:56am Dean:

Psycotic Pineapple played the venue behind our house a couple nights ago. Opening act was Roy Loney. I, uh, missed it.

Went by really quickly...

Not that anyone's looking now, but I did survive my exertion and lived to hear the rest of the show in the archive. Very nice show, Jeff!

I see you, @Listener Gregory! Thanks, and glad you survived.
