A lot of this reminds me of being in Olympia in 86 - 91. We were all just goof-off weirdos doing our own goofy things - some obviously more seriously than others. But I don’t think anyone ever thought anything of the scale of Nirvana, the impact of Bikini Kill and Sleater Kinney, or the lasting duration of the Melvins, K-Records or Kill Rockstars would have happened.

...whole 1st album!...most of the rest...
  4:06pm
mr_donutsu:

Because, of course, Olympia was not NYC - where all the “real” things happened then.
Avatar 4:10pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thinking of AliceCooper's observation that Media was slow & sparsez enuff then - you could have a Persona - & some Mystery still...
I was about 10 then - w/ an OlderBrother...Bowie for esgs. was not another MTV overexposure - he was a gawdammed ALIEN...
  4:12pm
Robert C. in Manhattan:

Of course, remember...before the players in NYC--Dolls, Suicide, Wayne County, and other early bohemian performers created their own scene--followed a couple of year later by the CBGB and Max's Kansas City bands who created THEIR own scene, NOTHING was happening in NYC.
Avatar 4:14pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Scenes are a Darwinian principle: you need someplace isolated &/or independent enuff to be unique - yet also, vital & large enuff to support things...

Hard to keep your art isolated nowadays. the internet has changed the dynamic whereby a day after you've uploaded your art, somebody downloads it, then proceeds to upload your idea in a slightly different form. That makes it hard to stay original imo.

Coming in late. Hearing him talk about things getting darker reminds me of “Club 57” on Saint Marks. Fun, creative and cool to a point… And then near the end it just became essentially a junkie flophouse dive. www.boweryboyshistory.com...
