When an Erotic Photographer’s Muse Becomes His Critic
By Motoko Rich

"Last month a model who posed for Nobuyoshi Araki, Japan’s most notorious photographer, accused him of exploiting and bullying her for 16 years.

... In a blog post published in Japanese in early April after “The Incomplete Araki” opened at the Museum of Sex in Manhattan, the model, Kaori — who uses only her first name — said that over their working relationship, Mr. Araki never signed her to a professional contract; ignored her requests for privacy during photo shoots; neglected to inform her when pictures of her were published or displayed; and often did not pay her.

'He treated me like an object,' she wrote."

"This is a translation of a Japanese blog post published on April 1 by KaoRi, renowned photographer Nobuyoshi Araki’s longtime model.
...

I wanted to share this powerful firsthand account of mistreatment in the art world because it has been an overlooked subject for far too long, especially when it comes to female models often referred to as “muses.” Profiting off of vulnerable bodies and not compensating models for their time, energy and talent needs to stop."

Excellent theme, @ Mayuko. I just read an appreciation of his show at the Museum of Sex that only gingerly alluded to the abuse claims.

regardless you like his style or not I admire his workaholic prolific. gotta watch AKRAKIMENTARI again. the models in that films were all 10!

It's not about me personally like his style or not, mzmzzm. It's about basic stuff in human relationship, which is respect for others. I understand some people enjoy his artistic execution, and of course they're entitled to do so.

KaoRi's story made my blood boil. It's so prevalent in the art world, at all levels. And I mean the emotional manipulation and abuse, not the sexual side, if there's one beyond power being asserted

The following is not in any attempt at consolation, but I am kind of glad that this old school boys club is getting its head handed to it. Working in an industry that for far too long was all about the "casting couch", I am glad to see the rug pulled from under the creepy scumbags that rose to the top.

From a cultural standpoint I hope that the same empowerment will carry forward to places that some might not feel as emboldened due to centuries of "cultural norms".

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:24pm fred:

Believe it or not, I served as a "muse" to an amateur choreographer for a couple of years before realizing she was emotionally manipulating me. This show's title is a pretty close translation of what I told her when I figured it out and burned bridges with her. So I know how part of this works

Hello Mayuko and cool cats.

It is a dilemma. I have enjoyed Bill Cosby's monologues from the late Sixties for ever it seems. Do I now not listen to them, are they no longer funny?

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:28pm northguineahills:

@Brian: Well, that's a tough one. I always tried to seperate the artist from their personality (ie: Miles Davis). Can he (Bill) profit from any royalties while in jail from you usage? If so, no. If can circumvent that, sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:29pm fred:

@ngh: So jealous. I love Afrirampo, and was so happy to see them again last year. I saw one of them after their set, but couldn't find the guts to talk to her (you'd think my expanding middle-age gut would help, but no)
Avatar    Sat. 5/19/18 12:30pm Mayuko:

@mzmzzm Nobody is censoring anything. In fact there have been no problem for him to publish his work. He hasn't done anything illegal and he's not getting punished. Nobody is seeking to punish him. All KaoRi is saying is that she wants to be treated like a human, not an object. "Please strive for a complementary relationship of supporting each other" is what she writes.

mzmzzm, did you even read her post? he didn't pay her when he should have, published her photos without her permission, making money and fame off of her photos, bullying her at work. None of them are "illegal', but the question is do you respect that? Do you value that? This is about a relationship in a work environment. Nobody's talking about his "art".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:41pm JakeGould:

Thanks to the Internet, I’m learning more and more of the backstories of artists and there’s always some crap… Except for Matisse, Miro and Doisneau. Those are artists I have read up about recently and impressed how their careers only really started when they were older. Well, maybe not Miro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:42pm Brian in UK:

Is this Frederick Delius sampling? Maybe not. It is Delius' time of year though. 'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring' etc.

  Sat. 5/19/18 12:48pm mzmzzm:

but that was her management capacity, wasn't it? whither that was herself or outsourced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:48pm fred:

It's not about condemning art or artists, but abuse. I hope there's a difference
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:48pm JakeGould:

Well, depends on the artist! I mention Matisse, Miro and Doisneau because those are artists whose backgrounds I recently got into. Miro was most recent and interesting since he’s Spanish and has an odd Jewish background that goes back to the Spanish Inquisition in the 1300s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:48pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 12:53pm JakeGould:

Well, regarding rights and photos… You know if you like any street photographers like Weegee, Ruth Orkin or Helen Levitt realize they profited from the images of people who—most of the time—had no say in anything.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:35pm fred:

@JakeGould: Fine whisky isn't about getting drunk, it's too expensive. Unless you're rich, I guess. I had a job recruiting pitch when the suitor pulled out a bottle of Port Ellen. We drained it, I signed on
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:35pm Ike:

Does anyone else remember when DJ Kenny G played that Windows startup theme on a loop for about 45 minutes once? That was great! I was at work and it made my boss so mad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:35pm JakeGould:

Sausage without USA is just sage!
Avatar    Sat. 5/19/18 1:36pm Mayuko:

Donuts are never ugh!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:36pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Ike: That's great! I missed that. haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:36pm fred:

@Dropof Goldensun: More than two hours? I'm all for it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:37pm Ike:

@Jake, we could use a lot more sage, and we could stand to be a lot more sage! Let's become SAGE instead of the USA! The, uh, States Against Gunking up Everything, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:37pm JakeGould:

Maybe I will open a donut stand with a sign that reads: “DONUTS: We take the ‘ugh’ out of donuts.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:37pm Dave B:

@Ike - in that Mental Floss article they link to a W95 startup sound time stretched x23:

youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:38pm JakeGould:

@Ike: Whenever I think about the USA nowadays I get a brain clenching moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:40pm Ike:

And re: the food fests, when they say "rain or shine", do they really mean THIS much rain, I wonder?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:40pm JakeGould:

Maybe sage would help? Like some old hippie lady burning a small bundle of sage.
Avatar    Sat. 5/19/18 1:40pm Mayuko:

I hope you won't disappoint, Dropof Goldensun... usually my show is less-ranting, and perhaps more noises? haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:41pm fred:

Sometimes ranting is overdue
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:43pm Dropof Goldensun:

I like the noises, and the ranting. I guess only time will tell. ;)
  Sat. 5/19/18 1:44pm mzmzzm:

i apologize if Im boiling it up but listen to ざんげの 値打ちもない. Araki's came from that era I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:44pm JakeGould:

@Ike: FWIW, the Park Slope 5th Avenue fest is not so bad. It’s definitely a street fair. But at least there are some decent restaurants on that strip that sell stuff at the fair then.
  Sat. 5/19/18 1:46pm mzmzzm:

Meiko Kaji rendition's better than the original imo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:47pm fred:

Too many established artists exploit aspiring ones, and this does trickle down. This might be the traditional way, but that isn't the kind of mentoring that nurtures both parties. It's a waste of talent, even if you don't mind the hurt
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:47pm Ike:

@Jake, good to know. There was some pretty solid stuff in the 7th Ave. one once, too.
Avatar    Sat. 5/19/18 1:49pm Mayuko:

@fred yes! NYC has taught me HOW TO RANT, haha. That, they never teach you in Japan. Even though I was always angry and it was indeed overdue! Ranting is a skill you have to learn.
Avatar    Sat. 5/19/18 1:50pm Mayuko:

@mzmzzm always good to have an opinion from different angle! Araki's indeed from THAT era, though, that I hope will end soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:52pm tmoyo:

All this time was thinking about being a female in Japan or for that matter in any place in the world. It was never comfortable for me. Actually, gender neutrality is my thing. I was never comfortable being seen as a woman, not that I want to become a man (although i wanted to when I was a child). I've always wondered if this feeling comes from the aversion of being objectified / being expected to behave submissively.

I love your rants Mayuko! Keep it up! I'll try to do that here in Japan too... Have to become more articulate tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:53pm JakeGould:

@Ike: If you go, I would recommend focusing on the areas between 9th Street and 3rd Street. And then maybe from Union Street down to where the big Key Food with a parking lot is. Definitely some good stuff
Avatar    Sat. 5/19/18 1:54pm Mayuko:

@mzm And re: her management, I do think young people should take more active move and be their own bosses right from the start - rather than trying to be "found" by established artists (that are often old men, in Japan.) Which is what Kaori is saying too. However, nothing excuses people in the power exploiting, taking advantage of inexperienced people. That is just not cool and I condemn that.

Too hot for a long dog walk. The bright yellow of the oil seed rape fields are stunning in the sunshine.
Avatar    Sat. 5/19/18 1:58pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo I share so many of that sentiments with you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:58pm Brian in UK:

Mayuko thanks for the stimulation of the mind. Oh, and the music!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 1:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Mayuko. Stay dry!

I've been thinking about the world my kids and their generation are entering and creating. Not that I have any clear ideas of what it will be like but I do have hope and faith! Discussions like this one are incredibly important.

Thanks again Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/19/18 2:01pm Jeff Golick:

Many thanks for the ranting and music!

Fitting closing track, "too much exposure". Thanks Mayuko, especially today. The topic was personal to me, and you made it work

I think I've proven myself guilty of mansplaining a few times in this show, which was doubly bad
I'll be away next week, not out of shame, but trying to get prime tickets for next year's dance season
Avatar    Sat. 5/19/18 3:28pm Mayuko:

@fred I don't think I saw such thing? Your thoughts and comments are clearly always welcomed! Good luck re: tix!

(I kinda stole today's show title from Daniel Blumin's "Your Song, My Foot!" WFMU marathon premium - check it out at our store! wfmu.store...)
