Artist Track Album Label Comments Special

Set 1: the old radio show portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Escape  The Country Of The Blind   Favoriting originally broadcast November 26, 1947    "...surrounding you - closing in on you - is a band of blind men who want your eyes." It's a love story. Of course. And we get to hear the hauntingly voiced Peggy Weber, as Medina Sarote.

Mic break between Sets 1 & 2. Background music for it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 2: newer looks at some classic pieces and people. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Henry Kaiser  Dark Star/The Other (Side B) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Those Who Know History Are Doomed To Repeat It  SST  More active and a little more rock than the original. Definitely some late 1980's downtown New York aspects to this interpretation, but that's what you get when you also have musicians like Joey Baron and Kermit Driscoll backing you up.
Junior Brown  Guit-Steel Blues (track 11) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Guit With It  Curb  Very Hendrix influenced. Like a country-tinged Hendrix. Great, full sound, and Junior is famous for his deep voice for a reason.

Mic break between Sets 2 & 3. Background music for it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 3: building up to punk, and fast. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Plastic Crimewave Sound  Grade Ceased (Side A) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Grade Ceased (a 7")  Plastic Crimewave Sound  Slow, sludgey, psych, and even a little punky.
Error  Transplants (CD #2, track 17) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Punk-O-Rama 8  Epitaph  Punk-hop.
Rocket From The Tombs  30 Seconds Over Tokyo (track 8, ended at -0:27) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting The Day The Earth Met The Rocket From The Tombs  Smog Veil  David Thomas, pre-Pere Ubu, Cleveland 1975. Raw, twisted, wild, swirly, acid-rocky, and speeded up in the middle - the best part, of course! At times, even magical.  ***
Transplants  Quick Death (CD #2, track 5) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Punk-O-Rama 8  Epitaph  Quirky, clubby, almost hip-hop funk also.
Distillers  I Am A Revanant (CD #1, track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Punk-O-Rama 8  Epitaph
Guitar Wolf  Lightning's Melody (track 13, begun at -3:13) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting UFO Romantics  Narnack  Raw, fairly high speed rock, gloriously raucous and sustained.
NOFX  American Errorist (I Hate Hate Haters) (track 10) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting The War On Errorism  Fat Wreckords  Neat hi speed guitar phasing.
Raised Fist  Get This Right! (CD #2, track 13: ended at about -0:23) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Punk-O-Rama 8  Epitaph  Heavy, choppy, and fast.
Adrenalin O.D.  WWIV/Rah-Jah (track 13, begun at -1:46) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Phat N' Old  Glue  The fastest for the end. Recorded live on Pat Duncan's show.

Set 4: the antidote to Set 3. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Loren MazzaCane Connors  The Art Of The Blues (tracks 7-11 only) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting The Little Match Girl  Road Cone  At times haunting, delicate, softly reverbed and ambient, quiet, like a slow imaginary floating western.  ***
Surface Of Eceyon  Freeing The Winds (track 6, faded out by -1:04) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Draggyn  Strange Attractors  Starts quiet and moody, then builds in a gently propulsive way to something glorious and transcendent.  ***
Overhang Party  Barcelona (CD #2, track 2) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Other Side Of  Paaphysique  Quiet and melodic, it builds but stays gentle. Beautiful.  ***
