I was buying my Beatles circa 1972/73. I was obsessed, and they were a done deal.

first album i ever bought with my own money -"the beatles'second album", for a quarter at a friend's yard sale. i didn't like it much. it's much different than "meet the beatles", which gave me an epiphany when i heard it, at 4 years of age. (i think...could've been 3)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:16pm Funky16Corners:

Second album is almost a stylistic step backward. It rocks, but it lacks some of the special Beatles "juice"

That British beat circa '60 to '65~'66 must have seen a lot of energy especially in Merseyside, Manchester, and that big city down south. // The Searchers were (are) a great Scouser combo!

This weekend, I had to drive to Orlando, and one of the CDs I brought w/ me was WFMU's Kevin Nutt's dj premium (Can I get a Witness?), two CDs of African American preachers. I thought it odd both CDs were missing, and looked all over for it my car. After work, I went to the store, and the street lights hit said absconded CDs just right, so I found them. I'm not a religious man, but I did verbally exclaim "hallelujah, praise jesus!"

Wikip. say Ian & Zodiacs did a lot of Beatles covers. Started in 1958! As did Searchers and Silver Beatles too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

Ian and the Zodiacs were from Liverpool, and never caught on over here but were huge in Germany
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

There's a great clip of them playing 'Why Can't It Be Me' on German TV
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:36pm TDK60:

Yeah the Wikipage says they did that pay-yer-dues work in Germany too, like others did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:38pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:43pm TDK60:

That Del S. L.A. early '60s sound, interesting that it may have had an influence on Scousers. [?]
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:44pm TDK60:

What a friggin' song, Needles and Pins. With this track they virtually *invented* jangle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

He did one of the first US covers of the Beatles, with From Me To You in 1963
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

Del Shannon did
  Wed. 4/18/18 10:45pm rw:

coel, no but my girlfriend, who had given me the harp, was very suspicious. “Just how does a harmonica blow out the window?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

It's like the episode of the Simpsons where the hurricane blows through the harmonica store
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:48pm TDK60:

What a great Rhythm Guitar sound! Ah..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:48pm Funky16Corners:

Searchers early LPs are great. Very solid
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

speaking of "jangle", i did think it was "feel a whole lot better" when needles and pins started. (i'm glad it was Del Shannon)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

Searchers had to have had a big influence on US folk rockers. That 12 string sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:51pm northguineahills:

Scary, rw! I would be in mourning for weeks.

Wife bought 16 antique harmonicas from Germany of various keys (from small to gigantic). She's a bit weird (i suppose like me, I reluctantly admit).

Love the intensity, sheer energy of the British ravers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:54pm TDK60:

Yes, that 12-string sound caught on! I've heard it wasn't 12-string on Searcher's 'Needles' but just their 2 guitars strummed with trebly tone. Something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

now that my ears are free of music i correct myself. i think the byrds' version of "hey joe" borrowed from needles and pins for the intro. (not feel a whole lot better)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:57pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - I think you're right about the guitars
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:58pm TDK60:

Thanks coel. The Byrds were the ones who really took it and flew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

i don't know the searchers so well. i always thought of them as just a cover band -maybe not true?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 11:00pm Funky16Corners:

They did a lot of covers but really put their spin on them
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 11:00pm TDK60:

coel: They did a lot of covers, maybe mostly so. But it was their sound, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 11:01pm coelacanth∅:

sorry but i'm quite partial to the Jimi Hendrix Experience version(s) myself! the byrds' might be next though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/18/18 11:02pm TDK60:

Oh yeah Jimi was heavy funky. Byrds version of that tune is nervy jerky trebly.

D. Berry sounds like a wah-wah guitar! But it's 1964 and Wikip says they didn't come out til '66. But same article says some geetarists got the same sound, earlier than the '66 wah-wah), using a Hammond organ pedal or a volume pedal, and article mentions this Dave Berry cut!
