![]() “I’m saying that what African culture has been about is the celebration of life, of joy and of creativity – the manifestations of which are to make one high. The white plantation owner saying, ‘Goddamn, where did they get all that energy from?’ thought it was just physical energy, but it was more than that, it was spiritual recognition, a recognition that all things in the universe have energy, that you are part of the universe and that everything around you gives you energy. Africans were agricultural, but they paid homage to nature in their dances, in their consecration of a tree before they cut it down." - Cecil Taylor |

Listener Robert:
Doug, I'm jealous of those who listened to Shep at an Earlier age. I turned on to him only late in his career. I saw his TV shows, read his writings, saw his live performances at Carnegie Hall & Princeton U. (hosted by WPRB). However, I probably wouldn't've been ready for him when I was much younger. After one of his shows at Princeton, I got myself and my date invited to have pizza with him and a few people from WPRB. I think I impressed my date, as I'd just shown him to her on TV a short while before. WPRB guys thought I was deserving because of a long story I wrote -- reminding me very much of Shep's style of story -- of how I missed his show there the year before that I had a ticket to. I have that story typewritten somewhere; it involved going to an anti-Selective Service activist group meeting at NYU and getting my car towed. It was a string of misfortune, like one of Shep's. That led to the story of how I tried at that post-show pizza gathering to get into Shep's confidence by talking about people I knew who knew him. Shep denied everything! | |
