“I’m saying that what African culture has been about is the celebration of life, of joy and of creativity – the manifestations of which are to make one high. The white plantation owner saying, ‘Goddamn, where did they get all that energy from?’ thought it was just physical energy, but it was more than that, it was spiritual recognition, a recognition that all things in the universe have energy, that you are part of the universe and that everything around you gives you energy. Africans were agricultural, but they paid homage to nature in their dances, in their consecration of a tree before they cut it down." - Cecil Taylor

Ausmax @ 10:32 (US EDT -- sorry, I was commuting) - "Dutch Naked Dating" would be a good name for a band. I think we can all agree on that.
  Fri. 4/13/18 11:18am Josh:

I like most anything that sounds like Gloria.
Avatar    Fri. 4/13/18 11:19am βrian:

Doug, would you consider doing a mic break infused with terms of art and/or jargon from your newly chosen field? I think that could be fun.
Avatar    Fri. 4/13/18 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

I have one Cambodian and several Mexican covers of Gloria. Probably others that I am forgetting. Every one is a thrill.
Avatar    Fri. 4/13/18 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Sure, βrian, but I would have to charge you.
  Fri. 4/13/18 11:21am Josh:

I hope to hear those covers some day, Doug. Thank you.
Avatar    Fri. 4/13/18 11:21am βrian:

Not quite yet, if I recall. There's still time to practice on us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 11:22am Parq:

Doug's lexicon brings the listeners all over the yard. He can teach you some, but he'll have to charge.

Rob Weisman played the Cambodian one on Clay Pigeon's morning show this very morning, in fact.

Wow, what a coincidence! (Actually, I don't believe in coincidence.) Still, wow.

Parq "Dutch Naked Dating" sounds like horrorcore to me
  Fri. 4/13/18 11:25am Josh:

I missed the Gloria cover this morning then. We were listening only late in the 7:00 AM hour.

@Parq
That's right. I am here to empower and enable you to make decisions for yourselves. And to funk you up.

I miss anything?
     Fri. 4/13/18 11:26am Listener Robert:

Doug, I'm jealous of those who listened to Shep at an Earlier age. I turned on to him only late in his career. I saw his TV shows, read his writings, saw his live performances at Carnegie Hall & Princeton U. (hosted by WPRB). However, I probably wouldn't've been ready for him when I was much younger.

After one of his shows at Princeton, I got myself and my date invited to have pizza with him and a few people from WPRB. I think I impressed my date, as I'd just shown him to her on TV a short while before. WPRB guys thought I was deserving because of a long story I wrote -- reminding me very much of Shep's style of story -- of how I missed his show there the year before that I had a ticket to. I have that story typewritten somewhere; it involved going to an anti-Selective Service activist group meeting at NYU and getting my car towed. It was a string of misfortune, like one of Shep's.

That led to the story of how I tried at that post-show pizza gathering to get into Shep's confidence by talking about people I knew who knew him. Shep denied everything!

A bibimbop devoid of Gochujang is a crime against humanity. Or so I am told.

Next time I'm in Squirrel Hill, Doug -- which I haven't been to since my relatives moved out decades ago. But I still patronized their fine Tunnel on subsequent trips. Does the park across the street still have that figure 8 bicycle course with its own tunnel?
