BIG, BIG THANKS to these late-inning marathon pledgers:

Aaron H of Gainesville, FL
Little Fyodor
  Tue. 4/3/18 11:52am Alessandro:

hi tony.... but why the very best shows are not archived.... damn
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 11:56am Tony Coulter:

Hi, Alessandro! Yeah, wish they could be archived. They're not archived just to be on the safe side, legally -- because I play complete cassettes, and sometimes unreleased recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 11:56am Tony Coulter:

NB: the "History of Jazz" cassette is most definitely *not* a history of jazz, as you will soon hear.
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:02pm Alessandro:

ok tony... thanx
Tue. 4/3/18 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

Yay, new pledgers! And hello, Tony and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:06pm JtotheK:

hi tony, hi everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, James and JtotheK!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

I'll be very surprised if anyone is able to ID today's LP under the cassettes. Still: Any guesses?
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:11pm Mark Williams:

i'm quite fond of this Nexda track, Tony. And hi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: Were you already acquainted with it, from elsewhere, perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:15pm Scraps h’m (h’mmm):

hey h’lo
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

High Low, Scraps!
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:18pm Mark Williams:

@Tony - no I wasn't. But this kind of "white dub" always catches my interest when done well. Not King Tubby or Lee Perry by a country mile, but charm is ineffable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

It's funny how few U.S.'80s bands ventured into dub territory. Most just used a "reggae beat" -- which was usually the kiss of death.
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:22pm Mark Williams:

I was going to say 'Beat Happening much there, The Dave?', but it's the same year as the first BH release!
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:23pm Mark Williams:

@Tony - it's purely a function of how many West Indians lived in the UK for decades prior to that and, therefore, how much music from that culture permeated UK popular (and underground) culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:23pm Scraps h’m ((h’mmmmm)):

Surprise Renaldo & the Loaf. Always welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

K Records distributed the The Dave cassettes, tho -- so there was definitely a spiritual link.
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:24pm Mark Williams:

aha!
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:27pm Mark Williams:

Lady June sounds like she could be Ed Ka-Spel's sister. Or mother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:28pm Rich in Washington:

Is this Lady June, of Linguistic Leprosy fame?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Yep!! (Heya, Rich!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Lady June also sounds like a cross of Gilli Smyth (Mother Gong) and Ivor Cutler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:39pm northguineahills:

Whoops, missed my mention up thread. I was getting some kelp to dip in salsa. (Not sure why I haven't thought of that before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, kelp-covered Captain NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:42pm Tony Coulter:

I once found a Port Said single lying on the sidewalk (in Park Slope, in the '90s). I took it, of course. I mean this thing, btw: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:44pm northguineahills:

Port Said, the Egyptian Port on the Mediterranean side of the Suez and where the largest soccer massacre occurred?
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:45pm Mark Williams:

@Tony - you are plainly cursed. I mean, blessed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:51pm JtotheK:

wow, how did i miss all of these artists/tunes in my jazz history classes in the past? i can really hear the influence Twilight Ritual had on Bix Beiderbecke .... b/w - enjoying this tape!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:51pm Tony Coulter:

Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:52pm northguineahills:

So, far, I only recognize Algebra Suicide and Renaldo & the Loaf (who in the 90s I mistook for a Lee Renaldo side project).
  Tue. 4/3/18 12:55pm melinda:

Hello everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:56pm Tony Coulter:

Hi, Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

Might as well reveal the identity of today's mystery LP-under-the cassettes. It's this thing: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

I've been going through a lot of my radio station samplers. Some of the fruits of that effort will be showcased on next week's freeform show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:01pm JtotheK:

noticed in the notes -- 'Includes an "official ballot" for the 1982 Miller High Life Rock To Riches Talent Search" ' -- which artist did you cast your vote for, Tony?
  Tue. 4/3/18 1:01pm Mark Williams:

oooh, that sounds interesting, Tony.
  Tue. 4/3/18 1:02pm Mark Williams:

"Safari" by Minimal Man was one of my favorite record of the '80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:03pm Tony Coulter:

@ JtotheK: I've got 5 or 6 of those ballots! All unfilled out. Perhaps we can all vote next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:05pm JtotheK:

good idea! and then your can return your ballot to Miller - perhaps you'll get a case (or two) of high life out of it.
  Tue. 4/3/18 1:17pm Mark Williams:

very Jazz Butcher'ish, the Deep Freeze Mice. I remember them, but nothing really by them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

They have quite a few releases -- all quite good, and entertaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

... and very British.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:22pm northguineahills:

Was The Paul Kelday track about She-Ra (Princess of Power!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:24pm Tony Coulter:

She-Ra, the female manifestation of Sun Ra
  Tue. 4/3/18 1:28pm Mark Williams:

This seems like the forum for this question. So Tony (and others), my old cassette deck has been a thing of the past for a while now. I still have an old receiver I run my turntable through and was wondering what cassette decks might I find compatible with that at this point? Anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

Probably any cassette deck, I imagine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

Unless you're asking for recommendations of specific (new?) decks?
  Tue. 4/3/18 1:34pm Mark Williams:

yeah, new ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:36pm Rich in Washington:

Cassette decks are really plentiful in thrift stores, I am noticing. Some are even high-ish quality, and it seems like lots of the ones I am looking at don't show much evidence of use, especially since cassette decks were sold as part of component systems well into the CD age, which I imagine people were using more by then,
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Mine is a "modern" cassette deck: a Tascam 202 mkV. It's nothing great, but serviceable. It does have one major flaw, tho: no dolby C, just dolby B. Here it is: tascam.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:39pm Rich in Washington:

I found a nice Denon unit and then shortly thereafter found a slightly more deluxe version of the same one so bought that. I like the non-auto-reverse models for ripping tapes. The auto-reverse ones can be infuriating if you're simply digitizing cassettes. I also find that a lot of the most recent decks - some of the cheaper dual cassette units - are of a lower quality build, depending on the brand, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:40pm Rich in Washington:

Tascam is good stuff. I don't think they had a cheaper consumer line of products like Sony, et al.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, my deck is sort of the low end of high end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:42pm Rich in Washington:

I actually saw a rackmount standalone Dolby encoder unit the other day. I almost bought it out of sheer weirdness, but then I'd have to rearrange my rack for something I would never really need.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:42pm Rich in Washington:

I think we had that model of Tascam or very similar in one of the production studios in KBOO.
  Tue. 4/3/18 1:42pm Mark Williams:

thanks you two. I feel I'm kind of a low end of the high end kinda guy anyway. Means I'm poor but have pricey tastes, yet stay tethered to my finances. As I should.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:43pm Rich in Washington:

My stuff is so low end I have nowhere to go but up. At least I can't cry too much when something in my setup dies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:46pm Rich in Washington:

The thing to look out for with older cassette decks is to make sure the belts are in good shape. You can usually test them out with a cassette that you are familiar with, and play it to see if the speed is off, which can mean a loose, worn out belt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

My equipment has a way of seeming to die, and then coming back to life just as I decide I really need a replacement. For some stuff, it's been going on for years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

So, to my ears, Gi-napajo is sort of a skronky prog band. With a bit of Beefheart action.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:11pm northguineahills:

Rubber Ducky, you're the one!....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:13pm northguineahills:

...you make bath time lots of *skronk*!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:14pm Tony Coulter:

Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:14pm Ike:

Dolby C was always a bit too aggressive in chopping off the high end for my tastes anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Ike! Down with dolby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

Dominique Grimaud (of Video Aventures) and Chris Chanet (of Etron Fou) were both members of Camizole (on now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:57pm listener james from westwood:

Glad to have been here; dug the blend of tapes! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:58pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, James!

See you next week, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/3/18 2:59pm Tony Coulter:

Stay tuned for today's hidden track, right after the out-theme.
  Tue. 4/3/18 4:41pm malloo:

Thanks!
