  Fri. 3/30/18 10:14pm Anthony!:

@jake those were the best, they were like two dollars. Radio Shack still had them until they went out of buisness last year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 10:16pm cklequ:

here we are pining for 20th century technology. I bet 100 years ago they were pining for the days when music was played live all the time by actual players and not mechanically recreated by some dag-barn machine!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 10:42pm melinda:

I watched The Jefferey Dahmer Files before tuning in. It was well done and not graphic but still nice to end the evening here on a pleasant note.
  Fri. 3/30/18 10:42pm Anthony!:

nothing but static
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 10:43pm Nardo:

Just reading something about another Daniel - Daniel Czubak - the graphic designer who did much of the elaborate artwork for Limelight records back in the 60's. I guess Hugh Hefner was so impressed with his work that he hired him to design his personal jet - "The Big Bunny".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 10:44pm cklequ:

Everybody loves static.
Fri. 3/30/18 10:44pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

Carmichael: Yeah really. I have all that "new" stuff like JVC quads, turntables etc. Just give me a wax or wire recorder I can rely upon.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

i made some recordings of short wave transmissions as a child. it's too bad they're on radio shack cassettes because now they're mostly just hiss.
  Fri. 3/30/18 10:45pm Anthony!:

the internet archive has a lot of shortwave recordings but I feel your pain
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:46pm northguineahills:

I got my Mexi father-in-law to fix my shortwave radio. Now my wife took it away to make samples for herself.

Ahoy, Daniel! Good evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 10:47pm fleep:

Radio Shack cassettes were called Realistic, which even as a pup I knew was a total lie.
Fri. 3/30/18 10:47pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

The old tapes can sometimes be saved by "baking" them. Lots of vids about that.
  Fri. 3/30/18 10:47pm Anthony!:

but you could get like five of them for 99 cents
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

"realistic" and the really cheap ones were "concertape"
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:48pm TDK60:

I do still have a transistor radio. No autochanger rekkid thankfully. Would like to have a reel-to-reel, you can have fun with them. Still have the rekkid turntable and dual cassette deck, of course.
  Fri. 3/30/18 10:49pm Anthony!:

where can you get blanks? does anyone still manufacture cassettes?
  Fri. 3/30/18 10:50pm Anthony!:

i know there is still old stock but that stuff is almost a generation old
  Fri. 3/30/18 10:51pm Carmichael:

Yes, cassettes into a convection oven at about 125 degrees. Will allow you to play them ONCE to a digital format.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 10:53pm Kat in Chicago:

@Anthony! Oddly, you may be able to get a brick of Maxell UR 90 min at your local Walgreens. If you have a local Walgreens.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:53pm TDK60:

Cassettes still available at my cornershop, next to the phone cards, lighters, cigz. Lots of tapes on online outlets.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:54pm coelacanth∅:

those concertapes weren't that inexpensive; and def not as inexpensive as they should've been. the cost of cassettes went way down by sometime in the late 80s (?). i used to buy boxes of 10 tdk sa for around 16 bucks; tdk d for even less. in 1980 the sa was like 2.5-4 dollars each.
  Fri. 3/30/18 10:54pm Anthony!:

We do. I will check that out. the URs were the bottom of the line if I recall.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

(i'm guessing there. my memory ain't workin' perfectly)
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

8-tracks, anyone?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 10:56pm Kat in Chicago:

I took a quick glance at Maxell's website and it looks like that's all they make now for the consumer market.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:57pm TDK60:

Linda Lee, you're correct, interesting sonics this eve.
  Fri. 3/30/18 10:57pm Anthony!:

8 tracks I used those when I was a college radio dj
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 10:57pm Daniel Blumin:

George! Man, I've been a bit off the comments floating around this here studio!
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:58pm TDK60:

Don't' miss 8-tracks; the interruptions.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:58pm coelacanth∅:

maxel was always a pretty shitty chrome tape. the ur, even though it's low-end in the hiss dep't, was probably their most dependable cassette.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

(or maybe it's high-end hiss...)
Fri. 3/30/18 10:59pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

Needs a higher temp. Don't use a convection or you will broil the plastic cassette. It will re-bond to the tape. Yes, there is lots of good cassette tape everywhere. Yes it lasts for a good 10-25 yrs. Even more. Why do I feel like I'm in George Harrysong's 'man cave' with this music?
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:00pm TDK60:

  Fri. 3/30/18 11:01pm Anthony!:

ur weren't bad...better than your average prerecordrd cassette of Brothers In Arms or Music For the masses
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

i have maybe 1500 cassettes, mostly recorded between 1978? and around 1998. most of the tdks still sound fine.
Fri. 3/30/18 11:03pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

Yes, have two 8 tracks... unless they multiplied last nite. Big problem with all those are the rubber rollers and belts that melt with time. The tapes last but the players don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:03pm Kat in Chicago:

Found a pretty good article on FACT www.factmag.com...
  Fri. 3/30/18 11:04pm Anthony!:

I have one cassette. A random TDK SA 90 that I recorded in 1984 and it still sounds as good as it did when I made it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:06pm Kat in Chicago:

I'm about to dig out some old tapes I made when I DJed at Lucky Cheng's NYC in the late 90s. We'll see how those held up. Unfortunately I think I used Memorex.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:06pm TDK60:

One trick for cassettes: have an extra equalizer to boost sounds, if not, turn volume & treble nobs to the brightest signal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:07pm Kat in Chicago:

Ironically, I'm digging those out as possible source material for a mixtape I'm actually gonna get paid for making.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

the 8-track tapes need to be tuned-up. it should be expected that the glue that holds the tape together (& signals the program change) would fail after 4 decades. and the foam pads rot. it's all available and easy to replace. then the player might need a tracking adjustment (a srew on the bottom, usually) and a cleaning.
they sound pretty good.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:09pm northguineahills:

I got my father's shortwave radio when I was 10, I made many recordings... But I moved back to the States when the Soviet Union expired.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

Kat that's a good gig!
Fri. 3/30/18 11:11pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

coelacanth∅: I used to tape things on the fly. So now there's not much of a note as to date or description. I put it on and it's this crazy mix from years ago. I always figured that whatever I liked would be pulled off the air soon. Sometimes that happened. More reason to support 'FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:12pm Daniel Blumin:

almost all of my tapes going back to the 80's still play a-ok. Kat, what kinda stuff didja dj?
  Fri. 3/30/18 11:13pm Anthony!:

@kat that was a good read. thanks

Greetings from Corvallis, OR
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:14pm TDK60:

Most of my 1977-thru-1982 tapes now muffled. But later '80s+post: many still good. // Have an old cheap quality tape of Pink Floyd's Ummagumma; the tape got upside-down somehow and between the backwards-run and muffledness it sounds different.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:14pm coelacanth∅:

el Garee i can relate to that! but it's good you saved them
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:14pm Kat in Chicago:

@Daniel: Disco and funk, lounge, music for the drag queens to perform to, maybe a lil Stereolab at the end of the night. I'm hoping some of the MC-ing for the drag shows made it on there.

I was gonna say something like that as well

Guilty confession: I wore my Scritti Politti "Cupid..." cassette out. That and the XTC stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:16pm Kat in Chicago:

Cupid & Psyche 85 is still one of my favorite albums ever.

genesis abacab here, went through 2-3 of those
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:18pm TDK60:

Still have a gift mix tape of WFMU stuff from 1984. My friend cut out the DJs tho.

Cupid is to die for. Frisky, dance music.

I have not listened to Making plans for Nigel since the last century
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:20pm Kat in Chicago:

Here's a thing I used to do: I lived at the top of Riverside Drive by the Cloisters in 97-98 and got a pretty good FMU signal, but worked weird hours/jobs and missed some evening radio. I recorded Dave the Spazz and Mr. Finewine to my VCR with timer when I was out and transferred to cassette to listen on my Walkman at work. Dunno if I saved any of that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:21pm Kat in Chicago:

I was more into the rock 'n' roll then. I think Bill Kelly was actually my gateway show bc I remember hearing it on someone's car radio and saying "what the heck are you listening to"
  Fri. 3/30/18 11:21pm Anthony!:

did anyone ever record radio to vhs tape?
Fri. 3/30/18 11:21pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

TDK- The djs are most of the fun. Place in time, space. I didn't know about 'FMU until the late 90's and then bypassing terrestrial radio for the internet.
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:22pm JakeGould:

On stereo Hi-Fi VHS? I tried a few times. Interesting experience back then. Like put the VHS tape in 8 hour mode and record just the audio of a concert. Great quality… But those tapes!
  Fri. 3/30/18 11:22pm Anthony!:

yes exactly
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:23pm Kat in Chicago:

I wasn't overly concerned about quality but I think I did use decent VHS tapes
Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:23pm TDK60:

Yeah, miss hearing the DJs, but interesting selection of music as you'd expect. // Wake & Bake played Nigel recently I think. // Gotta get up bright-early tomorrow, night.

tapes i had to remake for playing to death: the cure (faith on one side,17 seconds on the other); Eno (another green world) with beatles for sale on the other side; the indestructible sounds of soweto with graceland on the other side...i don't think any of those were tdks.
  Fri. 3/30/18 11:24pm Anthony!:

is the fm signal sound quality of WFMU better than the AAC stream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:24pm Daniel Blumin:

Jinx! fleep! Glad you digg!!! I should play some Scritti when it's not teh holiday party! Kat, I want to hear this shtuff of yrs at Lucky C!
Fri. 3/30/18 11:24pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

Yes, VHS if done right gives you a ton of audio space. I had friends who took that to Cuba and other places, 20 yrs or more ago.

Kat, Bill Kelly was one of my earlier regular shows on fmu as well. i have a few pre-archive tapes. i hardly ever hear him now.

  Fri. 3/30/18 11:28pm Anthony!:

yeah I am not sure that digital is or was better than analogue. convos like this make me wish I didn't toss old technology once someone deemed it obsolete. Now you can just record on a 512gb flash drive. But it isn't more fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:29pm fleep:

muhrvis you have them
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:29pm Kat in Chicago:

@Daniel That whole time in my life is so emotionally fraught that I've never listened to those tapes since I made them, but they potentially work with a theme I'm considering for this new project. So I'm going to be brave and listen next weekend I think.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:32pm muhrvis:

Did I tell you I met Dave the Spazz's father once? I think it was at Powell's in Portland. One can meet important people by wearing an FMU t-shirt.
Fri. 3/30/18 11:32pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

A- I would say that the compressed AAC stream is better than the analogue FM, which is also compressed as well. But in most places, the AAC 'FMU stream sounds brilliant. Actually I never listened to WFMU on a car radio. That would be a rush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/30/18 11:33pm Kat in Chicago:

I met Ira Kaplan that way, muhrvis!

Anthony you can get a cd burner that burns in "real" time. you can fade songs out or stop them at any point, adjust levels accordingly -etc. ...just like we used to do with cassettes.

Avatar Fri. 3/30/18 11:39pm JakeGould:

Well, most VHS decks that can record in stereo are considered “Hi-Fi” even if they don’t explicitly say so. The timer functionality is a big deal as well. No real consumer tape decks that could record on a timer… And VHS could store a lot of audio on one VHS cassette.
