A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@LL I just heard the met was doing that now. Shameful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/29/18 9:23am northguineahills:

@LL: It's suggested donation every time I've gone to any of the affiliated museums. I felt guilty when I was unemployed just throwing a few bucks their way, but it worked. (last year there was no residency requirement).

LL I’ve always enjoyed the subsidized/pay what you wish fee and give 50cents, I feel no shame and appreciate the ability of seeing what my British friends call the “thievery” in the museum.

I just looked at the Met’s website
“For New York State residents as well as New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut students, the amount you pay is up to you.”

We accept many forms of residency verification, including:

New York State driver's license
New York State identification card
IDNYC
Current bill or statement with a New York State address
Student ID
New York library card
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/29/18 9:42am Devin B.:

Linda lee- everyone has to “pay” and get an entrance sticker to go into the exhibition halls. I haven’t been since last year. I thought I heard their policy was changing to start charging all non NYers but I guess Tristan’s folks are NYers too
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/29/18 10:01am ⓔⓚⓔⓔ:

@TDK, not all of that is actually A440; some of it was her excellent free-form show Stochastic Hit Parade. Sometimes newer show titles will weirdly overwrite older show titles, or in her case the two titles somehow got melded together. But they were 2 different shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/29/18 10:01am TDK60:

Didn't know that out-of-NY State, NJ, CT folks have to pay full Met price.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/29/18 10:02am ⓔⓚⓔⓔ:

The out-of-state Met pricing is new, I believe. They wanted to make everybody pay full price but IIRC the city and/or the state threatened funding if they went through with that.

One example of the weird show title overwriting in old FMU schedules: John Allen's show had no title in 2001 but here it says it was "JA in the AM" even though it wasn't on in the AM! He didn't start using that title until recently. Revisionist history! Some kind of weird HTML coding error in the schedules: wfmu.org...

Steve Smith's weak leadership brought this to a head. Now the coach has resigned.
Probably because it started as a Commonwealth sport it does not attract ESPN's radar and ofcourse a Test Match can last FIVE days. With peoples attention spans decreasing this limits exposure. It has it over football (soccer) any day.
Though ESPN does have the Cricinfo site.

At any rate, I was definitely young enough in the '90s that "Gen X" seemed like a scary, older "other." I've read arguments that my cohort is a distinct "Generation Y" (mostly predicated on remembering pre-internet times), but again, it seems silly to split hairs when it comes to vast generalizations. sidebar here. Anyone see Vincent Gallo's swipe at Viv Albertine recently? He rung a lot of the usual libertarian bells in that article, as you'd expect.

im on the edge between millennial and gen z, and i wish i was just a couple years younger so i could be gen z because everyone seems to like them and hate us

Back too late to hear Jamila Woods, but have really been liking that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/29/18 11:37am melinda:

My first cassette purchase was the Beatles 2nd album, around 1980 or 81. Right in the middle of Gen X. There are always people of a given generation who find things of interest from previous decades.
@Bronwyn their time will come.

i’m squarely a millennial, at 30 years old. i thrive on the ire of the olds

@BronwynB Give them time-- they'll start hating Gen Z too. I can remember when we were described as "Generation X's brainy kid brothers and sisters."

Gen X here. Saw Reality Bites in the theatre and thought it was kind of stupid and did NOT speak for me!
Gen Z is supposed to have a lot of super conservative people in it. We shall see.
I am 50!

@northguineahills: In a DJ battle with Trouble I would just reveal how much I steal from her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/29/18 11:40am Itzall Ablurr:

Wild Neil, those are fairly easy to come by, but if all you really want/need is something to play those slabs on, a cheap option is to just look for an older "all-in-one" AM/FM/MLTPX system- a lot of those had 78RPM as standard. Also, you realize you are on a slippery slope when it comes to "collecting" 78s, right?!? haha.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/29/18 11:43am melinda:

@Neil Reality Bites was awful. It was trying too hard to capture a specific strain of Gen X attitude.

Trump is running the most conservative admin since Reagan and in some ways is more conservative than Ron. Sure he's not part of the movement but the only people that seem to care now is the Bush people.
