Great interview! “Mad Max” was one of the first videos I rented back in the 1980s.

I always wanted to know how some of these actors reacted to the USA dubbed version of the film. For so many years, that was the only way to watch Mad Max in the US. When the original was finally made available here, it was such a weird revelation.

Rich, I actually spoke with Paul about that after the interview and he laughed about it.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I watched the latest Mad Max the other day. I felt it had a lot of "this doesn't make any sense."

Such a great interview. Fury Road was like a Rob Zombie video though. Awful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
dale:

the dubbed version is the only one i've ever seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Rich in Washington:

I'd always believed the long standing legend that it was dubbed by AIP because they couldn't sell it to the drive-in chase movie crowd, but IMDB says that it was also because the original mix was really poor, coupled with the Aussie accents being somewhat difficult to understand with the latter problem.

Rich in Washington:

It's a trip hearing the original, as someone who's seen the dubbed version many times, over many years. So different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Devon E. Levins:

I recall Paul confirming that the distributor was worried that the Americans wouldn't be able to understand the Australian accents which seems silly now. As a result the dialogue and music levels were all off.

Wait? The original U.S. release was dubbed? I guess when the DVD version was release they had the original soundtrack on there, right?

Thanks all. Goodnight and see you next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes. I think it was mainly dubbed on all its VHS issues, even when MM2 was a big hit. If I remember correctly, it wasn't until its DVD issue that they had the original soundtrack, although I remember seeing a bootleg VHS that had it and a supposedly longer cut.
