![]() hello! good theme tonight. |
![]() |
![]() Evening, Gary! Hope you were able to dodge the snow without great fuss! |
![]() |
![]() Oy, at least you got a message. I have not-fond memories of one NJT bus making repeated attempts to charge up a steep, snow-entombed hill in Paramus, only to slide back down over and over. |
![]() |
![]() Hey there, Hyde and James! |
![]() |
![]() (Praying for beer o'clock to commence [won't happen until I'm finished here at work]). |
![]() |
![]() I say ad nauseam - years & years & years ago on PBS Newshour there was a Climate Scientist who said that Higher Temp.s & Rising SeaLevels (more moisture) will mean fewer storms - but larger! & what this will mean is more 'slam dunks': imagine the baskets in basketball getting lower & lower...It's likely to just get more & more 'interesting' on the Coasts... Galldangit Gary - it's a privilege to be presented w/ yer curation & preesentation. Don'chaknow. |
![]() |
![]() NGH! RevRab! |
![]() |
![]() 1st time here. May I sit and listen. |
![]() |
![]() TDK60, home taping is ruining the industry, but by all means, have a seat! |
![]() |
![]() C30-C60-C90—go! |
![]() |
![]() TDK60, this show is a weekly feast. Your plate will be filled and your goblet kept full. |
![]() |
![]() Greetings, y'all - looking forward to the dusty audio today! |
![]() |
![]() Tim! Hey, I just started reading Paul Bowles Travels collection (for the music stuff, obvs.) |
![]() |
![]() I remember purchasing Flying Saucer Attack CDs that said (on each one) "cds kill music ". |
![]() |
![]() ...was just wondering what artist to put on side B of tape w/Robyn Hitchcock new album; onto Maxell 90 UR. (piracy admitted publicly) |
![]() |
![]() Nice! I think "Their Heads Are Green and Their Hands Are Blue" has something on his musical travels around Morocco. |
![]() |
![]() Yes, the Travels book collects most or all of those pieces! |
![]() |
![]() this is great, i don't really know the Victrola release |
![]() |
![]() hey h’lo please no snow here, no snow |
![]() |
![]() Never even heard Bowles' music. So much to get to... |
![]() |
![]() shellac comes from the femal lac bug (from SE Asia?) |
![]() |
![]() Scraps! And, yes, it's the lac bug! |
![]() |
![]() Youuuuuuuuuuuuyouyouyouyouyouyouyouuuuuuuuuueeeeeeeeeee!! |
![]() |
![]() Now that bass drum, the person on it knows how to. |
![]() |
![]() I always remembered it as She-lac. |
![]() |
![]() Gary! Thanks to my snow day, I get to hear your entire show this week. Sorry I didn't get to see you during 'thon. Maybe at the Record Fair. |
![]() |
![]() Oh, and for anyone who's on Instagram, DtD's IG account is a must. They posted a Sister Rosetta Tharp clip today that left me honestly baffled as to why she isn't every bit as revered as Bo Diddley. |
![]() |
![]() Hey, Parq! No doubt will see you at the Fair! |
![]() |
![]() Sister Rosetta Tharp was amazing |
![]() |
![]() If you don’t already know, the Austin bombig suspect today blew himself up when police were closing in. |
![]() |
![]() PBS did an amazing American Masters doc on Sister Rossetta Tharpe. |
![]() |
![]() Oh, I need to see that |
![]() |
![]() yeah, me too |
![]() |
![]() I have shellac '78s that are both 10" and 12" |
![]() |
![]() I remember that 16RPM setting! |
![]() |
![]() when i was a kid, we had a portable, clamshell like turntable that played at 16, 33, 45 and 78 |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, I helped out with the notes a little bit on that one. |
![]() |
![]() me and my little sister used to listen to the ringo starr drum solo from "the end" at 16 rpm |
![]() |
![]() I'm old enough to recall rekkid players with 16 / 33 / 45. Yes, 16 RPM was mostly talk/stories. Recall some kids' recordings. When I got older used to fool with rekkids on the wrong speed. I've heard that some WFMU DJs do that on rare occasion. |
![]() |
![]() my Vestax turntables play at continuous speeds from 16-78 rpms (and backwards). |
![]() |
![]() Dave also got input from Ayyoub Ajmi from the fantastic www.settatbladi.org. That whole audio collection has moved over to the Internet Archive at archive.org... Bitrates are low, but the material is fantastic! |
![]() |
![]() Haha, laughing at Hyde & sis listening to Slooow Ringooo |
![]() |
![]() Oh, man -- I didn't know about Settatbladi! |
![]() |
![]() Oh yeah - phenomenal collection, primarily of aita stuff |
![]() |
![]() ...still wondering @ Side B; ideas? |
![]() |
![]() With new Robyn Hitchcock -- that's a tough one ... hmm ... |
![]() |
![]() ...maybe just some other R.H.! |
![]() |
![]() Haha |

Doug Schulkind:
Gary hello! | |
![]() |
![]() Doug! |
![]() |
![]() @TDK60: I like that latest Robyn Hitchcock album! If you want an all-Robyn tape, you could B-side it with an oldie like "Underwater Moonlight", or a more recent one. I like "Spooked" and "Goognight Oslo" from the last decade or so. |
Wed. 3/21/18 8:11pm
Doug Schulkind:
I love this Kassidat collection. Almost physically.
![]() |
![]() yeah! Kassidat. this one is great. |
![]() |
![]() Thanks for the good deas Tim. // Is this Moroccan language Berber or Arab or other? |
![]() |
![]() That last track was Arabic and Tamazight |
![]() |
![]() I'm going to say Berber, but I could be wrong and just be a rural Moroccan Arab accent. (Tamazight is the native Berber word for Berber). |
![]() |
![]() Seriously great stuff on the the Kassidat collection. Dave Murray has some amazing records! I think 'Makh Makh' is actually in Arabic, but some pretty far out Arabic. Would have to listen more closely - it's been a while. |
![]() |
![]() Oh, thanks for clarifying, Gary. I remember having trouble with that one! |
![]() |
![]() This Yemeni stuff is also phenomenal! |
![]() |
![]() How can we cajole DTD to put out some more of these amazing collections? |
Wed. 3/21/18 8:28pm
Sam Segal:
Greetings, Gary et al! | |
![]() |
![]() Sam! |
![]() |
![]() At my old bodega in Bushwick, I commented on how I liked their Yemeni folk music they were playing, so, the guy gave me a 2 cassettes and a cdr on the spot. |
![]() |
![]() Used to get some great Bollywood cassettes at an Indian grocery. $2. There was room on the cassette for you to label it. |
![]() |
![]() Hello there ladies and gentlemen! (2nd Cheap Trick album "In Color") |
![]() |
![]() tim's brain is faster then mine tonight. |
Wed. 3/21/18 8:39pm
Jeff g. via app:
Gary! Stunning! Thanks for this show and for your wonderful help last Sunday!
![]() |
![]() Jeff! So great to see you (several times!)! |
Wed. 3/21/18 8:41pm
Sam Segal:
Anything from the Excavated Shellac compilations coming up, Gary?
![]() |
![]() And, yes, Hello There Ladies and Gentlemen -- which, by the way, was the first song I ever heard live, because Cheap Trick opening for KISS was the first concert I ever went to |
![]() |
![]() Cheap Trick and Kiss. Wow, big excitement for a young-un! |
![]() |
![]() I was 14 and it was like I had died and gone to heaven |
![]() |
![]() Wow Gary - how awesome is that! My first concert was George Benson at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, touring for the big "Weekend in L.A." album. Not very rock, but very enjoyable! Then saw Weather Report with Jaco, which was very rock! |
![]() |
![]() Sam, just in the background, unfortunately -- so much vocal music to get through (and I have a thing for vocal music) |
![]() |
![]() And look where it took you...old 78s from Indonesia. // My first: Soupy Sales [sic], The Hollies, Hullabaloos, etc. old-style revue. |
![]() |
![]() Tim, you were way more sophisticated than me. I was basically there to see a guy in stage makeup blow fire out his mouth and let fake blood drip from his tongue |
![]() |
![]() LOL!! |
![]() |
![]() The Hollies were loud, brash, energetic. I was rocked. Apr. '65 |
![]() |
♥
Wed. 3/21/18 8:51pm
Doug Schulkind:
First real concert I ever went to: Ravi Shankar and then Billy Preston opening for George Harrison. |
![]() |
![]() @ TDK60 - I LOVE the Hollies - they were so great around that time! @Doug - wow! was that the Dark Horse North America tour? |
![]() |
![]() Doug, *Starting* with Ravi!! My word. |
Wed. 3/21/18 8:53pm
Dean:
First concert: Yes, Ace opening. Umpteenth concert: Cheap Trick at the Whisky in LA, their second visit to the city, I think. Saw them three times in progressively larger venues, and they improved each time. Can't say that about a lot of bands.
![]() |
![]() Ravi Shankar?!? How old were you? |
![]() |
![]() Dean! |
Wed. 3/21/18 8:54pm
Dean:
Pretty sure I heard Ali Akhbar Khan at Occidental way back then.
![]() |
![]() Damn, the Hollies in 65 |
Wed. 3/21/18 8:56pm
Jeff g. via app:
First concert: James Taylor in Boston. I recall our crew being aggrieved by punks as we waited for the bus ride home.
![]() |
![]() Haha, whaaaa? I can't imagine you going to that, Jeff |
Wed. 3/21/18 8:59pm
Dean:
Real first concert, though, was a subset of the LA Phil at a high school auditorium in my town, Zubin Mehta conducting.
Wed. 3/21/18 8:59pm
Jeff g. via app:
Well, it's an evolutionary process, innit?
![]() |
![]() True |
![]() |
![]() @Jeff - LOL! @Dean - nice! My first rock show was Jefferson Starship at the Warfield in SF. Neither Grace Slick nor Marty Balin were in the group then. So it was Mickey Thomas doing the main singing. They did a cover of "My Sharona". |
Wed. 3/21/18 9:02pm
Dean:
I prefer to think it's preordained. Also, what's the shame in hearing James Taylor?

@tim a Yes, the Dark Horse Tour in '74. |

Dean:
In the event Uncle Michael is lurking, I should note that my "first" concert reports here of course do not include the Grateful Dead's first show. I attended every GD show.
![]() |
![]() I can't believe a 13 year old wanted to see Ravi Shankar! |
Wed. 3/21/18 9:07pm
Joe:
Maybe this was already mentioned as I just came in but is that the melody to Swan Lake?
![]() |
♥
Wed. 3/21/18 9:07pm
Doug Schulkind:
Earlier that day, Harrison, Shankar, Preston and band members visited the White House: www.whitehousehistory.org... |
![]() |
![]() Haha, I dunno, Joe -- HI!!! |
![]() |
![]() @ Joe - I think that's right. I was thinking Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, but I think you're right. |
![]() |
![]() Don't Think I've Forgotten is on my very short list of the best pop music documentaries I've ever seen. It just might be The best. |
![]() |
![]() @TDK - wow! David Crosby was still in the group then, right? How great! |
![]() |
![]() Yes, Gene Clark too. Everything they were doing was so unheard of, it was electric. |
![]() |
![]() @TDK60 ack that Byrds show! i'm soooooo jealous |
![]() |
![]() There are a *lot* of Modren versions of Swan Lake out there. Something about that melody just seems to grab that crowd. I think its use in Dracula may have something to do with that. |
![]() |
![]() In my local city council election, an youngish (a year younger then I) African-American (Who lived for a spell in Ft Greene, Brooklyn) woman beat the incumbent 64%-36%. I met her and talked to her for a good while. I couldn't be more ecstatic. |
![]() |
![]() @TDK60 gene clark was the greatest |
![]() |
![]() ..to hear the unheard...that's why we hang around these parts. |
![]() |
![]() OMG - speaking of James Taylor! |
Wed. 3/21/18 9:14pm
Dean:
...who was speaking of Carole King!
![]() |
![]() Haha, I hope Jeff's still listening so he gets to hear this |
Wed. 3/21/18 9:15pm
Jeff g. via app:
Yah! It's like 1982 all over again. Sorta.
![]() |
![]() Ok, hear ya at home Gary, leaving work! |
![]() |
![]() I am loving the organ or accordion that is playing in the background on this track |
![]() |
![]() It's gotta be an organ of some kind ...? Night, NGH! |
![]() |
![]() hey! |
![]() |
![]() Uncle Michael! |
![]() |
![]() hyde: yes to Gene Clark; I've sat in silence with his ringing voice of yearning. |
![]() |

I am feeling LUK-y! |
![]() |
![]() Haha, well, it was a snow day for me |
![]() |
![]() This stiff is really soul-like. |
![]() |
![]() [stuff] |
![]() |
![]() Weather Underground says it's still snowing but you couldn't prove it by what I'm able to see out my window in the dark. In Manhattan, it's been what it almost always is -- a boatload of slush. |
![]() |
![]() @Parq to your point as a HUGH Universal Monsters fan that is why it has become so recognizable to me. |
![]() |
![]() this is all such good stuff |
![]() |
![]() This is mesmerizing! |
![]() |
![]() I'm turning in early. A couple more nights of that I'll be nearly recovered from marathon. |
![]() |
![]() Such great music tonight. |

ike:
Dig it! | |
![]() |
![]() Oh yes - what a fantastic reissue this is! Beautiful package, thoughtful expansion of the original 2-LP set, and some remarkable recordings. |
![]() |
![]() Then, a year or so later, saw The Byrds during their "Fifth Dimension" tour at Village Gate, now Le Poisosn Rouge. Life was never the same after that show. |
